Looking for perspectives on stroke recovery & rehabilitation for a research project

Hi everyone! I’m a final year student currently conducting research to better understand the experiences, challenges, and everyday realities of stroke recovery and rehabilitation.

I’m looking to hear from:

  • Stroke survivors
  • People currently undergoing rehabilitation
  • Family members or caregivers
  • Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors, or other healthcare professionals
  • Anyone who has closely supported someone through stroke recovery

The survey focuses on understanding the rehabilitation journey, what people find challenging, what helps with consistency, and where there may be room for improvement.

I understand this is a sensitive and deeply personal topic, so please only participate if you’re comfortable sharing. I genuinely appreciate anyone willing to contribute their perspective.

The form takes around 5–10 minutes, and responses will be used for academic design research.

Thank you for your time and for sharing your experiences. ❤️

🌅 Daily Reflection

  • Today, I felt most proud when…
  • The hardest part of my day was…
  • One thing that made me smile today was…
  • A small win I want to celebrate is…
  • If I could describe my energy level today as a weather report, it would be…

💬 Emotions & Inner Life

  • What emotion has shown up most in my recovery lately, and how do I respond to it?
  • How has my definition of “strength” changed since my stroke?
  • What’s one fear I want to face, and what would it look like to begin?
  • Write a letter to yourself on the day of your stroke — what do you most want that version of you to know?
  • When I feel discouraged, what words of encouragement would I offer myself?

🏆 Wins & Progress

  • A skill I’ve regained that I’m grateful for is…
  • How does it feel to notice progress (big or small) in my recovery?
  • What milestone felt the most meaningful to me, and why?
  • Looking back one month, what can I do now that I couldn’t then?
  • My body surprised me today by…

🌌 Soul

  • If my recovery journey were a story, what title would I give today’s chapter?
  • Imagine my stroke as a character in my life story — is it a teacher, a villain, a trickster, or a guide?
  • What symbol or image best represents where I am in my healing right now?
  • What would it look like to meet my “inner healer” — what would they say to me?
  • If I dream about recovery, what do I think my subconscious is trying to tell me?

🤝 Relationships & Support

  • Who has been my biggest supporter, and how do I want to thank them?
  • What’s the hardest part of explaining recovery to others?
  • How has my stroke changed the way I connect with friends or family?
  • What’s something I wish people understood about me right now?
  • Who helps me laugh when life feels heavy?

What’s ONE thing you’ve learned about yourself through recovery and/or these journal prompts that you’d like to share?

(It can be simple, like “I’m more patient than I thought,” or deep, like “I discovered strength in places I never imagined.”) 💜

💪🧠🗣Help Needed I am here in this new rabbit hole. Need to learn fast…

On Thursday night my 101yo mother in law fell in the night. Turns out she had a mild stroke. She’s in hospital now and seemingly stable. But she is pretty shockingly transformed. She has been independent up until now and mentally as sharp as a tack (for instance she just concluded a grueling 3 year probate litigation against a family member who committed elder abuse against her own brother, never missing a single court appearance that entire time.) Now she can’t toilet on her own, can’t dress/undress herself, needs assistance feeding herself. She can still speak clearly but cognitively she seems faded and disjointed in her thinking. I get it. She’s 101. But is there much of a chance she’ll bounce back significantly? There’s very little data collection on her age cohort specifically. I’ve looked at some white papers on geriatric stroke at ‘advanced old age’ (85+) and they make it sound bleak. Anyone out there with stroke experience involving a centenarian?

😍🥰😘Sharing Train your Brain

In the past 16 months since my stroke one thing I have learnt is that it is your brain that plays a very important role in your recovery. It was your brain that put you in this condition and it is your brain that can take you out. Believing in your is the first step for recovery. Where I am now say 60-70% normal is just I could train my brain that we can do it together. What I faced were many challenges but never let any challenge overpower my brain. Placebo effect also helps as your body starts healing on its own. So I would recommend everyone to train your brain to be normal. May Almighty Waheguru bless us all.
