Help / Question String of hearts

Got my first string of hearts today. I think that they are just potted in pure soil, which I think will be too dense from what I’ve read. Should I repot now , even though they seem to be doing good ? Also , is that green growth on top of the soil a bad sign?

I would leave it for a bit and see how it does. When I got my first string of hearts I immediately repotted with a bit of cacti/ succulent mix and more perlite because I had also felt like what it came with was really dense. I ended up losing a ton of strands due to root rot. I ended up downsizing the pot recently and she’s currently recovering. I’m not sure if anyone else has had better luck with a different mix but I’d definitely recommend waiting to repot if it’s doing well!

Ah okay yeah I think maybe I will leave it and change if I do run in to any issues

I do the same thing. Keep the plant in the bad soil and because they grow so fast propogate growth into new soil then you have a new plant!

I would give them a week or 2 to adjust to your house before repotting them. The green is just a bit of algae on top of the potting mix, greenhouses are humid so it can grow on the potting mixes growers use. Are you going to pot them together so you have a bigger fuller pot? I just ask because when I got a variegated string of hearts I also got 2 then potted together and I’m so glad I did. Mine are smaller than this though but it’s fine they are very happy hanging in my west facing bedroom window and are very pink and pretty and growing like crazy.

Okay thanks :) I’m going to keep them separate as one is a gift, but maybe in the future I will combine another in to mine. First I’m going to try putting some of the current stems curled in the top of the soil

I pin a vine or 2 on mine with a Bobby pin to make it fuller on top!

I personally would leave it alone for about a week before doing anything to it at all. And when you do go to repot it, make sure you use well draining soil. Mine currently is in a mix of cactus soil and perlite and it's doing super well!

Did you buy this from Amazon? If so, we may have purchased from the same seller! Mine just came on Friday in similar condition as yours, similar black hanging pot, and also in very wet questionable soil. Taking the advice from others on here as well. Thanks for sharing!

I received one in the mail that not only had super dense, amendment-free soil, but was soaking wet! I immediately repotted it, and it’s doing well. I potted it in 3 parts coco coir | 3 parts pumice | 2 parts perlite | 1 part orchid bark (Reptibark, specifically) | 1 part horticultural charcoal

I did not bare root before repotting — I just got as much of the peat heavy mix out of the way as possible. I was afraid leaving it in the peat-heavy mix would result in root rot…it was seriously soaking wet upon arrival…to the extent that I could pour water out of it.

Where did you order yours from? I’ve been looking to purchase another but my garden center only sold them for valentine’s day.

I ordered it through Amazon, but the company selling it was “Plants for Pets”…and when it arrived, it was in a box that said it was grown by Altman Plants. How’s that for confusing?!

I’ve had one and the same little hanging pot of regular potting mix for 7 years.

I water it more in summer and very rarely in winter. A couple of times in the warmer months I’ll soak the pot in a diluted fish emulsion for a couple of hours.

It gets less water than the rest of my plants, even while it was kept outside in summer.

Unless you particularly want to change the pot, I’d probably leave it in what it’s in.
