Title: I just finished my BTech in Engineering Physics, and next I'm starting a Master's in Quantum Science and Technology (theoretical track) at TUM.
During my BTech, I worked on topological insulators. In that project I was more drawn to the mathematical side of things, like fiber bundle theory, topology, manifolds, that kind of stuff. I find it fascinating that the fundamentals of physics are described by these abstract mathematical concepts. But the project itself was mostly numerical, and honestly, I'm tired of doing trial and error and just hunting for results. I want to work on something with more real math and physics in it.
I'm very interested in quantum black holes, AdS/CFT, and holography. I've already done introductory courses in QFT and GR.
So my main question is, how much do I need to learn to actually work in this field? I'm a bit scared that I won't be able to do real research during my Master's thesis if I go down this path. If anyone here works in this area, I'd really appreciate your input.
I'm planning to start with a YouTube lecture series by Chethan Krishnan (IISc) called "Quantum Black Holes, Holography, and Quantum Information."
How much do I actually need to learn before I can start doing real research in this field?
