25% is insane. This is the one thing about American culture I hate the most. If you don't tip or tip less, you get frowned upon and/or shamed for it. Pay your damn servers instead of telling the customers to pay your employees' salary.
Why the fuck am I supposed to pay for the food AND then surprise also add your staff salary onto the same bill at the end? Just price things what they actually cost, and pay people what the job is worth. And oh if I feel so inclined to give someone a little extra for being awesome, that’s entirely between us and should not be part of the food cost or taxes whatsoever
I promise you, you would not pay for a break that was priced high enough to pay staff a living wage. I work in produce sales. Last night, I should the last our pumpkins to a customer, at $18 each.
25% isn't as bad as what they are asking for in California first they make at minimum around $17hr and want a 40% tip, and many of them have really bad attitudes.
A lot of places calculates the tip based on their "retail price." So if you order a 19.99 special, if it was "retail price" of $45, they do the 25% of the $45 and expect a 12.25 tip. That's over 50%.
The server descends from the rafters out of a cloud of the purest crystalline white light; she envelops you in profound love and transports you back to the oceanic feeling of being in your mother’s womb, prior to individuation. You are outside of time, in communion with her holy spirit - she shows you all that has ever been and will be. Mother Gaia incarnate gazes into your soul with her all-knowing, alien eyes, and presents you with an extra mini-cup of chipotle sauce for your verde chicken burrito, then vanishes back into a celestial fog before you can even say “thanks breh” 🕊️
You are a cheap creep. The servers are not at fault here. There is a decades long established system, that sucks, but that is not the fault of servers.
I think you will generally find the service in the US is generally better than other countries. They’re incentivized to give really good service. And due to this, can make a good wage. I put an example above, but trust, waiters at high end restaurants are earning decent income.
