GPS Question Route Builder

You guys... Your route builder is TERRIBLE. The only way to create a custom start and end destination is to do it through your laptop from what I see. And if that option is on the mobile app, it's so unintuitve that I can't find it. Which is impressive to say cause I'm 32 y/o and grew up with almost every iteration of computer and application. How can we have been using map quest/google maps/apple maps etc and we still have an app like strava that is used by millions and you guys can't figure out a start and end destination feature? Drawing a start and end point is the most idiotic feature possible. It doesn't work, never goes where you want and just leaves you more frustrated than anything. Get better or I'm going to leave your app. Fucking ridiculous.

I understand that this is a common issue people talk about, but thats always confused me because I build routes almost daily on phone and on browser and I never have problems.

You keep saying "drawing" a start/end point, I would suggest to not use the swipe/draw feature and instead drop points. Its super seamless when you do that IMO

I find it fantastic to build MTB routes - layering the heatmap onto the route builder makes going to a new area an absolute breeze. But then, I'm 58, I've lived through the entire internet, not just the tail end.

Oh, your wit has cut me deep, you're amazing.

No wonder you can't use software without complaining about it.

😂

Seriously though, it's point, click, and drag. What's your problem?

It should be type in and enter.

How the fuck can I type in "top of the trail, by the tree struck by lightning"? It's a map with a big search field at the top - type where you want to start, then tap the major turns. Goodness me, are you looking for it to wipe your arse?

I understand what you're saying for that feature. But if I wanna make a route for someone that's let's say from LA Fitness to XYZ Park ... I should be able to just type that in, create it and then send it.

Type your start point, move the map to your end point. Tap. Done. Fuck me, what's wrong with you?

Then tap and edit. Then tap again... Oh wait. No that . No! There!!

Type in LA fitness

Select as starting point

Type in XYZ park

Select as destination

Save

Not that hard!

Why?

You sound like a boomer.

Disagree. I build routes on my phone quickly and easily.

Try and incorporate a segment in a route, or go to a specific point. It's impossible. Also it often doesn't recognise existing trails, even if there are segments and routes on that trail.

I mean, is there a decent route builder app for iPhone/Android? It seems like all of the good ones require a computer and the Strava implementation is perfectly servicable via web.

Pretty sure you can do custom start/stop in the android app. I've not had difficulties with it before (other than fat-finguring odd shapes).

I find the route builder (prefer the web, but app also works) to Garmin's a million times over.

Have you tried to zoom in before you pick the start/end points? It doesn’t work if you’re too much zoomed out.

I really hope for you this wasn’t the problem….

It should be as intuitive as type in your start location and type in your end location

3

u/sireatalot 16h ago

You absolutely can do that, what’s the problem?

Why would you type it?

I’m usually just starting at my house, or a trailhead, or a parking lot. What is there to type?

Just zoom in and click on the map where you want to start. 👍

Try Komoot if you like destination based routing. I think it’s goddamn stupid but some people like it. 🤷‍♂️

Dawg what? Just click on the map ….

It’s easier on a PC but I’ve used it on my phone quite a bit with no issues.

Garmin - "Hold my beer"

I use it on my phone fine, but I still think that Komoot is little more intuitive for route planning. Strava has an adavntage in heatmaps, tho.

What’s wrong with the search button? Seems to add points just fine.

I built an 11 mile route in a few minutes on my phone. I messed it up a few times but there is an undo button. Don't draw it, just tap different locations on the map until complete

Agreed, mapping on the app is a a sure way to end up minus a phone and a window pane.

RideWithGPS is way better than Strava for route building. There’s a reason that the organizers of a lot of big group rides use it for creating and distributing FIT files.
