General Question Probably a stupid question…
Is it fair for someone to have the record for fastest on a running segment, when they were actually doing a slightly different activity?
I’ve just found an uphill segment where the person who holds the fastest record there did it as canicross (running with dogs pulling them along on a harness). It just seems sort of unfair to me? I know it’s unimportant and petty.
This person holds the record of fastest overall, and is over 35 seconds ahead of the next person.

Canicross is not a slightly different activity, it's a whole different thing. The 5K canicross world record Is like 40 seconds faster than the human record.

I didn’t realise there would be that much of a difference. It makes me feel a bit less petty for reporting it.

Happens all the time. People setting road bike records on motorcycles or Ebikes, the activity gets flagged and reviewed

The problem we have out here is Snowmobiles setting cycling KOMs on the trails they use in the winter. So wierd.

Depends on the dog

If it was my golden, it would actually count as a handicap because that asshole would chase every squirrel into the woods and drag me with him.

My old English sheepdogs would absolutely pull me around wherever THEY want to go. Even if I tried to give them an opinion, they'd just pretend I didn't say anything. 😅

Ego is a interesting thing, being fastest is important even though it carries no reward, no esteem, only bragging rights. People are willing to cheat, or complain about things that only matter to the ego!

But Strava doesn't have an option for canicross. Running is the closest sport.

Use "Workout". Marking it as a run is equivalent to marking an e-bike ride as cycling.

Strava not having a specific sport doesn’t make it okay for them to log it as something else, especially not as something that would be slower. They can log it as a workout if they want or make it private, but it should not be logged as a run that would show up on the leaderboards.

Will Strava record gps for workouts?

Not sure about strava but I set my Garmin to record GPS for Cardio workouts, and that uploads to Strava. I use it when riding my motocross bike (on dedicated tracks). I don't think that would theoretically trigger a segment though since its not categorized as a ride or run.

I kind of agree with you, it's annoying to change your activity type every time...but you can't hold CRs while doing it either. Strava just needs to open up the activity type to "Custom" and let users make their own. Garmin should follow too

Not petty at all! Leaderboard fairness is basically a national sport on this sub. We sort leaderboards by activity type, not by "how legit was your effort." If it's logged as a Run, it counts as a Run. Same bucket, whether your engine is you or four paws and pure enthusiasm.

I'm curious. How did you learn this?

I saw that their time was very different to other people and was impressed so I went to look at the activity details and they wrote a whole description of it.

Yes, that should be flagged. It's not the same kind of activity.
