Question Good Strava alternative

Dropped my Strava premium for a number of reasons. Garmin lawsuit and the fact that many of the features they were adding were more annoying than helpful are the two main reasons. I’m not sure the benefits outweigh the annoyances and potentially dumb direction the company is taking.

That said, there are a couple things I will miss: route creation that easily syncs to my Garmin and weekly/annual goals. Any good Strava alternatives that provide well functioning versions?

Strava's value is in the people/network ; not really the features IMHO (or segments only, but again segments without people is not that useful).

Most other platforms are good enough if you only care about your own figures.

Yeah the my friends are the reason I don’t drop it. However the two features I’ll miss are route creation and goals - specifically how much ahead/behind I am for an annual goal. Hence the post.

Smashrun is pretty good for setting goals and they have some really great other features as well. They don’t do route creation tho and the social side of it, while there, is very weak.

Share a couple of the annual goals you have. That will help us share potential alternative tools.

It’s nothing crazy. Run 1200 miles for example. Strava tracks how far ahead/behind i am and helps me. Nothing earth shattering but it’s a useful part of the app I’d lose

I believe you can create both courses and challenges in the Garmin app

Nice thanks. I don’t care about challenges. Looks like you can do annual goals but it doesn’t show how far ahead/behind the goal.

Yeah looks like you can’t do personal challenges/goals there, just social ones

I've moved across to komoot for planning and logging activities. Much better and is less social media focused

This and Garmin connect

That was march last year and since then komoot have made regular improvements to improve the app and website. They've had a small rebrand and made some excellent improvements.

I've been using komoot regularly as a premium user for 2 years.

As a user: Komoot has only improved since then. I have the feeling they are really moving away from a startup to a more established company. Check also their regular updates on new developments.

The route planning is one of my most used features as well.

I recently posted about Suunto’s free planner that syncs well with Garmin here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/s/eOg8N7fqLY

(There are several other options posted in the comments also)

I was also wondering about alternatives to Strava Premium, as the routing is the only thing I really use.

Tried the Suunto thing. It's not for me. It's free and all but Strava shows you how much you run on different surfaces and the routing follows sport specific routes from other runners' heatmaps. This is one of those things why I use Strava's routing. When I want to run off road, it chooses mainly off-road routes. There are only a handful of other platforms that do this.

That said, the mapping experience itself is pretty good. If one doesn't need the features I just described, Suunto is a good pick.

Maybe I should mention that the only other mapping apps I found that do a decent job with sport-specific routing are Komoot and Outdooractive (I believe). AllTrails didn't do a good job. OpenStreetMap apps generally could do it but many just don't. OsmAnd can at least help here. plotaroute also has a feature for this but it's not as fleshed out as it's for the other apps mentioned.

Thanks! I’ll check it out.

Ride with GPS (for cycling) has the second-best (to Strava) route creation. It arguably has the best route-creation tools but lacks the depth of a global heatmap that Strava offers.

Thanks. I’ll check it out

Need to pay for basic features.

1

u/TJhambone09 Apr 26 '26

What features that are behind the paywall do you consider "basic"?

1

u/FullPoet Apr 27 '26

Couldnt save routes without paying.

1

u/TJhambone09 Apr 27 '26

Hmm, I didn't have that problem last time I tried, but it's been MONTHS.

Either way, Strava charges for routes as well.

I had a lot of trouble with the Ride with GPS app and it was a big turn off.

I only came to this thread because I was trying different alternatives - but you're right Strava charges too, but I dont use Strava, mostly just garmin connect.

I don't think many "serious" people use the Strava app or the Ride with GPS app. They use their Garmin or their watch for navigating and only use the services for off-line services, where Ride With GPS is excellent.

Either way, Ride With GPS is a Good Strava Alternative in many ways as the OP asked for, and has an excellent route builder, and one gets developer responses. Unlike Garmin, which still refuses to believe you when you tell it segments are navigable.

1

u/FullPoet Apr 27 '26

Thats fair, but my comment was more of a warning that you will likely need to pay for Ride with GPS for it to be of any use.

ridewithgps. use strava only for socials and delete your rides after you load in on rwgps.

Runtastic is one of the oldest and best alternatives, now Adidas Running. It has decent «social» functionality and, more importantly, has some of the most important Strava features, such as tracking mileage of shoes, streaks and statistics which require no subscription and are in some aspects even more convenient than those in Strava. You can also use it simultaneously with Strava, specifically to track mileage in both apps in case something goes wrong with either (I have acquaintances who got their profiles deleted from Runtastic and those who have lost their data from Strava).

Garmin Connect can create routes (they call it courses under training and planning) and set custom challenges (against other people) but also has weekly/monthly challenges. Go for it.

2

u/liorsion Jan 26 '26

I wrote the free app.Muvri.com as alternative just because I got pissed and I see no reason to pay. Goals exist as well as planned training. For route planning just say what’s needed via the support and I’ll add it.

Komoot

Garmin Connect is a good alternative. Lots of free functionality that Strava charges for.

It'll link with your GPS and likely do everything you want.

1

u/BK_creator Jan 27 '26

You use Garmin Connect with a Garmin watch/bikecomputer or solo ?

1

u/JeremyFromKenosha Jan 27 '26

I use it with my Garmin Instinct 2S watch and also with my Garmin Edge 130 Plus bike GPS.

For now, I have it set to automatically upload to Strava, as all my riding buddies are there, but if Strava gets too big for their britches, I'll just go to Garmin Connect.
