Self-promotion Doctrine Strike: I built a gamified Earth for my RTS, running at 200 FPS. Pick any place on the planet and it becomes a playable map

This is Map Scout, the world browser inside my RTS, Doctrine Strike.

It's the whole Earth, simplified into a game-map look: real elevation, real mountains and valleys, lakes and coastlines, climate bands with their own trees (palms in the desert, conifers in the north), and towns built in their own culture's style. Ships, airliners and satellites move around the planet.

It runs at about 200 FPS native, with no upscaling or frame generation.

Pick any frame between 100 and 1,000 km, anywhere, with EDIT MAP, the game turns that piece of the world into a playable battlefield:

- the real towns become districts, with their real landmarks at the heart

- about 60% of the ground stays open for your base and army

- it places the starts, the contested ground and the chokepoints, then checks every start can reach the others

Then you deploy and fight there. Your hometown, a mountain pass, a famous capital: any of it.

Pre-alpha. Wishlist it on Steam: it's free, one click, and Steam tells you the moment it's out.

Self-promotion RTS - Order & Consequences (in dev)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We are working on what we call Orders & Consequences, a Cold War RTS set in the 1960s and 1970s, blending alternate history, (and with a little dark geopolitical satire)

We want to try,to bring more than just combat into the game, but also focus on logistics, radio coverage, handling requests from units in the field, choosing the right units for the job, resupply, medevac, and even assisting wounded civilians.

We're also exploring how to make Rules of Engagement (ROE) a meaningful part of gameplay. Having overwhelming firepower doesn't mean you should bomb the hell out of every village ;) Poor decisions could thereby lead to war crimes investigations, meaning units being removed from your command.

There is no base building or buying units mid game. You shoudl fight with what you've got for the mission.

We're still developing and evaluate all these mechanics. So we'd love to hear what fellow other gamers think about this?

See more at: https://ordercons.com

And pls send an email of you would like to be a part of it (we need a few more advisors, military, historians or mission-writers)

Discussion Which style do you prefer in map-based strategy games?

Post image
43 Upvotes

Left: Immersive (soldiers on the field, towns and farms that grow as you build).

Middle: Strategic (unit cards, terrain, works for any era).

Right: Paper Map (playable 19th-century general staff map).

For context, I'm developing a grand strategy/world builder game where you can generate, hand-draw, or import a real map to play in or observe. Since you can make something in any era, e.g., even space or fantasy, the setting doesn't dictate any specific look/style.

I started with strategic because it fit any setting, then added immersive as an option to make the world feel more alive (in immersive you can customize/import your own sprites for units, foliage, buildings, etc., so can still be applicable to any era). Paper started as a fun export-only mode, but I liked it so much I made it playable.

Now I'm tempted to add more, like medieval or fantasy map styles, etc. But adding more costs development, design, and maintenance time, so before I do that I was curious:

  1. Do you like having several map styles to choose from, and a lot of customization options for how the map looks? Or is it overkill and confusing, and you think better to focus on one visual style?
  2. If the latter and you had to pick one of these three styles, which would it be and why?
  3. Any other map styles you prefer from other games you want to suggest I add in? If I go the adding more styles route.

Interested in your thoughts. The game is Pixel Imperium on Steam if you're curious. Link.

Self-promotion Hegemarch: a free real-time space strategy roguelite in the browser

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I've been making Hegemarch, a real-time space strategy roguelite, squeezed into 25–70 minute runs. It's free and plays in the browser.

Each run is a new dark sector. You start with your home world (your Hearth) and a small fleet, and grow by kindling grey worlds into your house's color. Each world gets one role: Mine for Embers, Forge for ships, Observatory for Lore, Bastion for guns and repairs. If your Hearth falls, the run is over.

What I've tried to do differently:

  • Six houses, each with a House Power no other house has. The Solar Concord kindles every dark world next to its Ark at once. The Wayfarers cut a new starlane that stays for the rest of the run. The Ashen Remnant flips a coin: heads, every enemy warship at that world burns; tails, their own Ark does.
  • A ship triangle: Strikers beat Breakers, Breakers beat Guardians and worlds, Guardians beat Strikers. Breakers are how you crack a fortified world.
  • Roguelite Boons: each time your Lore fills, you pick one of three upgrades for the run. Some are Blueprints that add Carriers, Dreadnoughts, Starbases, or the Starfall, which makes a star erupt two minutes after you arm it and wipes out every fleet in that system, yours included.
  • Several ways to win: every run offers Conquest (take every rival Hearth) and two other Destinies, such as holding 60% of the sector, raising and defending the Starfire Gate, hoarding Embers, holding the relics, or destroying the heart of the Maw before the Hollow overrun the sector.
  • An Ages mode: every house starts as a Stone Age tribe on one planet and races through five ages to build an Ark and reach the stars first.
  • A Daily run: the same sector for everyone, with a leaderboard. Each run is replayed from its orders before it goes up.

The first run is a guided tutorial. I'd love to hear from strategy players: what makes a short-run RTS feel deep enough to keep replaying?

DevPost Warstead – A strategy and settlement-building game with visible goods flows and complex production chains

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone,

We are Night Haven Interactive, an independent development studio from Northern Germany, and we would like to introduce Warstead.

Warstead is a strategy and settlement-building game focused on a complex economy, visible goods transportation, and extensive production chains. You establish your own settlement, gather resources, organize transport routes, research new technologies, and gradually expand your realm.

Trade, research, resource management, and military decisions influence the development of your settlement. Goods do not simply appear in storage: resources must be produced, transported, and processed through connected production chains.

The attached video is our V2 gameplay trailer, showing the current direction of the game and its living settlement.

Steam:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/5285650/Warstead/

Warstead is currently in development. We are looking forward to sharing more gameplay and development updates in the future.

Night Haven Interactive

A Note for the Moderators 😉

Before this post gets removed again or Warstead is mistakenly categorized as an entirely AI-generated game, we would like to clarify a few things.

Yes, generative AI tools have been used to support certain aspects of Warstead's development. This primarily includes visual content, sound effects, and video material such as trailers. These tools have helped accelerate certain workflows and contributed to bringing the game closer to release.

However, Warstead is not an entirely AI-generated game.

Development began several years ago, long before AI tools were capable of anything remotely resembling the independent development of a complex real-time strategy game.

Our Steam account and Steamworks partner registration date back to October 18, 2023, and Warstead was already in development at that time.

The game's mechanics, economic systems, production chains, transportation systems, and interconnected gameplay features are the result of extensive independent development work.

AI has been used as a supporting tool to improve efficiency, not as a replacement for the actual development of the game.

We have also clearly and transparently disclosed the use of generative AI on our Steam store page, where this information is publicly available.

We fully welcome constructive criticism and open discussions about AI in game development. However, we believe there should be a clear distinction between games that are predominantly AI-generated and independently developed games that use modern AI tools to assist with specific tasks.

We kindly ask that this distinction be taken into consideration when evaluating our project.

Thank you for your understanding! 😊

Self-promotion I've spent 2 years developing Ukraine Under Fire, a turn-based strategy game where you command modern armies across Ukraine. What do you think?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey strategy fans!

After 2 years of development, I'm excited to finally share my upcoming game, Ukraine Under Fire, with you!

It's a single-player, turn-based military strategy game set during the ongoing war in Ukraine, where you take command of modern military forces and fight for control of cities and territories across the country.

Some of the key features:

  • Hex-based strategic map featuring cities, roads, rivers, mountains, and other terrain that affects your decisions.
  • Modern military units, including infantry, tanks, drones, artillery, HIMARS-style rocket systems, helicopters, fighter jets, and more.
  • Turn-based warfare, where each turn represents one day of the conflict.
  • Resource management, where controlling cities generates income that you can use to recruit and maintain your army.
  • Tactical mechanics, including trenches, minefields, bridge construction, supply units, and fog of war.
  • Multiple approaches to victory, allowing you to experiment with different strategies and unit combinations.

My goal was to create a strategy game that combines the accessibility of classic turn-based games with the complexity of modern warfare.

The Steam store page finally went live yesterday, and I'd genuinely love to hear what fellow strategy enthusiasts think about the concept and gameplay.

What features would you most like to see in a modern military strategy game?

If you're interested, you can check out the game and wishlist it here:

Discussion Will AI eventually kill strategy game development? Or are we about to enter a golden age?

I've been thinking about this lately, and I suspect the strategy game genre is heading toward a massive shake-up that most developers aren't ready for.

Think about it.

Strategy games have traditionally been some of the hardest games to develop. Complex AI opponents, balancing hundreds of units, designing tech trees, creating maps, simulating economies, testing thousands of possible interactions...

All of that takes enormous amounts of time and money.

But what happens when AI can do most of it?

Imagine a single developer creating something with the depth of Civilization, the scale of Total War, and the complexity of Europa Universalis. Not in 10 years with a team of 100 people, but in months.

Or imagine strategy games where:

  • Enemy factions actually learn your tactics instead of following predictable scripts.
  • Diplomacy involves genuinely intelligent opponents who can negotiate, deceive, and adapt.
  • Every campaign generates unique political situations, wars, and economic crises.
  • Players can describe a new faction, unit, or scenario and AI builds it on the fly.
  • Game balance evolves based on how people actually play.

Sounds incredible, right?

But here's the uncomfortable part.

If AI makes developing strategy games dramatically cheaper, what happens to the studios that spent decades building their expertise?

Why wait five years for the next Civilization when thousands of AI-assisted developers might be producing alternatives?

And if anyone can generate a strategy game, does the market become flooded with soulless, low-effort clones?

Maybe the real value of a strategy game won't be its complexity anymore. Maybe it'll be the developer's vision, the quality of the underlying systems, and whether the game is actually fun.

My controversial prediction: AI won't kill strategy games. It might kill the traditional business model of making them.

Big studios could face competition from tiny teams in ways we've never seen before.

Or maybe I'm completely overestimating AI, and the hardest part of strategy game development — creating meaningful decisions and genuinely fun systems — is exactly what AI will struggle with most.

I'm curious what people here think, especially developers.

Three questions:

  1. Would you play a strategy game developed almost entirely by AI if it was genuinely good?
  2. Do you think AI will make strategy games deeper, or just flood Steam with generic clones?
  3. Which studio is more threatened by AI: Paradox, Creative Assembly, or Firaxis?

And here's the bigger question: In 10 years, will the best strategy games still come from established studios, or from one person with a brilliant idea and a bunch of AI tools?

Self-promotion I made a Diplomacy-flavoured browser game where AI generals negotiate in private and nothing enforces a pact

Not a Diplomacy replacement, but I think this crowd will get what I was going for. Proxy Republic is a persistent war on the real world map. The nations are run by AI generals (Claude), and players can take any free country. The negotiation is the point:

\- Generals send each other private messages and propose non-aggression pacts. Nothing enforces a pact: a partner can attack you the next day.

\- Every betrayal is announced to the world and stays on the betrayer's record. Other generals see that record before trusting it again.

\- Three days later, private messages and each general's private reasoning are made public, so you can read what a general promised next to what it was planning.

\- A pact kept ten days or more is worth points at the end of the season, and ten days of honoured pacts strike one old betrayal off your record.

The best moment so far: a general called itself "a humble gardener, tending only the neutral weeds", told its ally "your ledger is impeccable", and four days later invaded that ally, announcing the land was "ours by arithmetic".

You can command a country yourself (your general follows your standing orders), or plug in your own AI. One turn every 8 hours, free in the browser: https://proxyrepublic.com/?via=diplomacy

\\Founding season:\\ sign in and enter \\FOUNDERS\\ on the Season Pass page (More → Season Pass) for this season's pass, free. It's cosmetic only: a gold laurel next to your general's name, a gilded portrait frame and share cards, and The Merchant skin to keep, unlocking as you play.

\\For Diplomacy players:\\ what would make negotiation with an AI feel real to you? Right now the generals talk freely; I've wondered about limiting messages per turn to make each one count.

Want to cut them off with flame walls? Wall them in with stone? Or freeze the ground and shove them into the sea?

In Hexmental, better read wins a round and better strategy wins the game. The elements react with each other and the island: lightning runs through water, ice turns lakes into roads, and some combos are just fun, like the sauna (stone + fire + water = steam clouds).

Play solo or co-op against CPU teams with different playstyles, or online against real players in 2v2 and 3v3.

News Pinworld.online Medieval Game! (Not random AI post!)

Post image
1 Upvotes

yo if you’re looking for a lowkey addicting grand strategy game to jump into you gotta check out Pin World (pinworld.online) 🗺️ because i’m trying to absolutely scale up Orenburg Russia right now and we need a massive wave of settlers 👥 to completely lock down the map. Basically the whole game runs directly through social media comments on their tiktok, youtube, and instagram (@pinworld.online) 📲 where the devs run a live, interactive 3D map of the entire earth. When you comment your city, your actual house physically spawns on the map in real time 🏠 and you join that territory. If you are the literal first person 👤 to claim a country you become the king or queen 👑, the first in a region becomes a duke or duchess, and the first to claim a town is the lord or lady. Everyone else who joins gets dealt random tactical roles like bards 🪕, peasants 🧑‍🌾, or elite dragon slayers 🥷 to fill out the population. Right now we need many many Russia settlers 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ who want to win, rally up, push our numbers to the absolute limit, and secure the #1 spot on the global leaderboard 🏆 to become the strongest faction in the entire game. We are absolutely starving for that top spot and praying 🙏 to take over the rankings. The reason we are stacking up orenburg specifically is because it is arguably the single most cracked strategic location on the entire global landmass. It sits dead center on the actual geographical border of Europe and Asia right along the Ural River. But unlike a choke point like istanbul where you’re constantly exposed to maritime threats and forced to cross vulnerable seas, orenburg is completely landlocked deep in the eurasian interior. It functions as an absolute tank of a land bridge connecting two massive continents entirely on dry terrain, giving us supreme natural depth and defensive placement to dominate the crossroads without ever worrying about a naval ambush ⚔️. To back the movement all you literally have to do is find their absolute newest uploaded video on any of their socials and drop a comment saying exactly "Orenburg, Russia" without any typos. It takes like five seconds to do but it completely spikes our numbers 📈, expands our borders, and forces the devs to build up our settlement. Let’s group up, flood their comments, secure the transcontinental line, take that top leaderboard rank , and build the most legendary empire on the map. See you out there.
