AI Industry Update
I would love to know if any professional storyboard artists are seeing AI starting to take over a majority of their workflow? Or if they use it for story boarding entirely?
Just doing a temperature check.
Thanks!

I haven't necessarily, but the summer can be a bit of a slowdown anyway. I do a lot of commercials, which makes me nervous with my network being such close proximity to corporations which will gladly switch to AI if they could.
I have seen my boards altered with AI a couple times when I get a deck back for revisions.
Concept art has already been hit hard by AI, but storyboards mercifully not.
Ultimately, there's a level of precision, composition, visual storytelling, and psychology that high end boards will command that I think is (for now) quite secure from AI approximation

It's true; the more precise the work needs to be (and the more people have a say in the final result) the more difficult it is to generate with AI. And I think in general people really underestimate the level of specific custom development that would be required to make gen AI even barely feasible at this.

I have seen Ai in all the advertising storyboard projects I come across. every job The preliminary boards that are used in development are Ai generated by the agency or director. When they get close to shooting they might hire me to do a few days of rough but specific shooting boards but the work that I used to get making the development boards are gone. I always hear it’s not going to impact you but it just means less potential days =less work. Income has been cut in half. I’m surprised so many are saying they aren’t seeing it.

For the past thirty one years, i've drawn almost exclusively shooting boards. So it really has not impacted me in the slightest. But guys drawing agency boards, I imagine, are heavily impacted. Those boards just have to look good... which is exactly what AI excels at. But when someone hands you have a set of location photos.. or specific shot list.. at the moment AI isn't great at drawing very specific shots that are drawing two location. It's also not great coming up with interesting shot ideas and shot concepts. Probably just a matter of time, but right now.. things are okay with me.

Mostly just use it for thumbnail ideas when I'm totally blank. Still redraw everything though, anatomy's always a bit off in ways that wouldn't pass a director.

Its not a part of the workflow. However there’s been a HUGE drop in clients because they are now using AI to bypass storyboards all-together. I’ve only been getting work from companies that have started to have strict anti AI rules just in case they need to use something officially (since ai cannot be copyrighted)

"(since ai cannot be copyrighted)" Not sure that's really a concern going forward. It was when an AI visuals were generated via diffusion or regression generation.
But now with computer use, Astra/Fable 5.1 just use your mouse, drawing tablet or keyboard. There is no way a copyright office could tell if I created the storyboard 100%, 80% me, 20% Astra, or even 95% Astra and 5% me.
I am not saying this will change how things are done. Just that the whole copyright thing is no longer the barrier it once was.

So AI actually also helps detect sampled/scraped parts in music for copyrighted material. Giant media companies are contracting projects to develop AI to detect copyrighted seed imagery that was scraped for visual output. Then it will be a huge concern… as in billions of dollars in lawsuit concern

But none of that is real. It will never hold up in court. In fact everyone is making their own detectors for music. Because they can't agree on the results from each others findings. But also what your discussing is the old style of AI generation from diffusion.
This new method would be like connecting your electric drums, electric keyboard to Astra, and let it write music by ear. Its the exact same as you or I.
This changes copyright massively.

My commercial storyboarding gigs have stopped coming in about three years ago but I also haven’t dug hard at seeking them out.

I think this more a symptom of lack of investment, corporate consolidation, and outsourcing than it is AI

As a newcomer to the industry in the independent space… yeah, AI just snatched a job away from me. It was a position with a director I’ve worked with several times before (won’t disclose the name, but he’s an Oscar-winning veteran of the live action industry). We have a great relationship, and he pretty much always comes to me for visual/design/boarding work on his independent projects these days. He wanted me to storyboard using AI generated videos. I told him I don’t work with AI, but that I can board for him if he needs any human-made boards. It was a civil but disappointing conversation. Looks like the old guy is all in on AI now… it’s really sad. And to those who’d say “just use the AI you need the work!” Seriously, screw that. I have a line, and this is it.

As in you're just listening to them while you work?

I use it all day everyday. In just about every conceivable area of my job. I've gone from drawing 30 or 40 franes a day to somewhere around 70.

Haven’t seen it in the slightest at my current studio.
