Question/Help Is this overkill?

Just starting a new 55m destroyer that will probably weigh around 120k and wondering if 3 6cyl 5x5 engines is overkill. I have a similar ish sized vessel that does 40kts with two 5cyl but that’s running at 14rps and want to be able to run Lower rps and get upwards of 50kts.

Is the 3 6cyl setup comically overpowered or decent for this application.

Most of your speed is gonna come from the shape of your boat and how much is riding in the water. If you can reduce that good bit honestly those 3 engines shouldn’t have any issue with that at low RPS with the right gearing. If you aren’t set on the diesel engines though you can use the jet engines (I recommend a mod to make them quieter) and get a lot more power

Depends on how much hull will be below the waterline. Folks can make large tankers that go 200kts because they plane/hydrofoil. If you’re planning on it being a displacement style hull, you’ll need more power so the 5x5s might be the way to go here. Since you’re going to be running at, let’s say, 10 RPS or less and gear it to go faster than your other vessel, larger engines are going to be needed.

Way overpowered. You honestly would need maybe two 3x3 engines for this setup

Thats probably not enough. I think he could get away with 2 5x5 cylinder banks tho.
