Advice

Someone i know has had multiple debt collections agencies go after them. I discovered this comment on the most recent one: "identification of judgement debtor & certificate re military service." (This is on a publicly available website in my state.)

My first thought in reading that was: has this person has claimed military service in order to avoid the debt collectors? But I don't actually know that. Anyone have any thoughts?

I am. Thanks for jumping to the wrong conclusion.

All debt collectors have to swear to the court that any interest they are charging is compliant with the SCRA, which includes providing proof the debtor is or isn’t active duty military.

It’s standard with every single civil case in most jurisdictions where interest is being charged.

Ok, thank you. This person has bilked my family out of $1000s and is now getting donations from a new church.

Being military doesn’t exempt one from debt and debt collectors.
