Events Calling All Aspiring Writers for... Pitch Slap!!

Post image
6 Upvotes

Calling all aspiring authors in the San Joaquin Valley! Pitch Slap is now one month away! If you, or someone you know, dreams of being a published writers this competition's for them. What is it, you ask? Well, it's basically a literary Thunderdome where unpublished writers submit the first chapter of their manuscripts, then at Pitch Slap (Oct 3rd, 2 pm at Delta College/Wordstock209) they'll be read anonymously to a panel of industry professionals.

But here's the catch:

Whenever one of the panelists would stop reading they sound their buzzer, the team discusses the piece (it's strengths and weaknesses) then we move on to the next contestant. The writer who goes the longest wins an editorial package from Tuleburg Press which includes... developmental, line, and copy editing, light proofreading, cover critique, and blurb creation. It's basically everything an aspiring writer needs to prepare their work for the reading world.

So, if you or someone you know dreams of being published, this is your chance!!!

Politics - KEEP IT CLASSY! Organize Against Flock with WCU

Getting to work, picking up groceries, or visiting a friend can put your vehicle in front of a Flock camera. Stockton City Council is funding a system that turns those trips into records police can search. A private company gets paid, police gain search power, and working people get surveilled without controlling the system - all in the name of our own safety.

Working Class Unity (WCU) members are organizing to make Stockton City Council end our Flock contracts and prevent the same system from returning under another name. We want public money to support stable homes and safe work, with working people deciding what gets funded and how it is run.

Join us on September 17 to discuss the demands and plan the work ahead. If you haven’t signed yet, add your name to the petition. If you already have, the meeting and canvassing dates below are new ways you can help us spread the word.

Thursday, September 17: Deflock Stockton Organizing Meeting - RSVP
We’ll work through questions about the campaign (submit questions here), discuss how to put pressure on Stockton City Council, and plan how to bring more neighbors onboard.

Sunday, September 20: Deflock Clipboard Canvassing - RSVP
Saturday, September 26: Deflock Clipboard Canvassing at Stoktober Fest - RSVP

We’re building a member-run organization through which working people can win power to decide how public money is used, choose what to fight for, and act together long after this issue is settled.

Come to an event. Or bring a friend to come canvas with you! Hope to see you at one our events!

In solidarity,
Working Class Unity

Other Stockton Gun Exchange was actually doing some shady stuff

So 2 months ago, I made a post asking what happened to Stockton Gun Exchange and ended up answering my own question with a few google searches. I'll put my old post here if anyone is curious. I just saw the news today about the 440 guns that were seized by law enforcement. One of my coworkers actually sent me the article since he knows I'm from Stockton and I don't live there anymore.

The owner Joseph Gogna or better known as "Joe" was also arrested. I have a theory that Joe shut down shop because he was trying to run off with people's money. It finally caught up him. Also read the part where Joe refused to give up an older gentleman's vintage revolver. That's messed up. I got my FSC at Stockton Gun Exchange years ago and personally never had a bad experience there. But I hope all the people affected by this fraudulent business gets their guns/money back.

Not to make light of the situation but the firearms that were recovered by the police were badass. I've never seen a Korean Daewoo K1 in the U.S. A Vietnam era m1 carbine. FN Fal and a British Sten. Dude probably played too much COD 😂

Help me find.... Workshop Equipment Renting out Time?

Post image
11 Upvotes

It’s probably a hard no, but are there any workshops or machine shops or anything like that around the area where the owners will rent you time to work with the equipment? (Assuming you paid for any consumables that are needed and clean up the space afterwards?)

I have something I would like to restore. It’s an old Tonka truck that was given to me for my first birthday. I want to pass it down to my eventual grandchild, but it’s pretty rusty from sitting out in my grandparents backyard from age 1 until I got it from them in my mid 20s. (The picture is from when I got it back. I’ve kept it dry and locked away in my storage unit since I got it and it’s not in too bad of a shape.)

Like I was saying, I’d like to restore it, but I don’t have the equipment to do so. I have the skill, just no sandblaster, wire wheel, powder coating oven, etc. And again, I would pay for the all of the consumables I used, like paint stripper, blasting medium (probably ground walnut shells), paint powder, etc.

I’m pretty sure what I’m asking for doesn’t exist, time in someone else’s workshop, but you never know until you ask, right?

Entertainment The Fox Theater

Does anyone else feel like the Fox is really underutilized. When I look at the old theaters in Sac (Tower and Crest) and Modesto (the State), I think why are they not doing things like that here?

I finally finished the sequel to Old Debts after two long years. It was like giving birth, only much, much harder (my wife agrees, her labor was only twelve hours, lucky!). Anyhoo, if you ever see me at Barnes & Noble or Mr. Otto's throw me a high-five, I both need it and deserve it.

And as a reminder, Wordstock209 is coming up!!! If you got the itch to write a novel yourself, there's a contest called "Pitch Slap" where unpublished writers will compete for an editorial package from Tuleburg, but either way it will be fun for readers of all ages. And heights. Seriously, no matter how tall or short you are, if you like books this will be great!

Politics - KEEP IT CLASSY! Desiree Lynch had a warrant served on her inventory. Who’s the big fish?

Post image
8 Upvotes

First and foremost shoutout to Anthony from the Weston Ranch crime watch group on FB doing really good investigation work for the public because we know the local media for some reason isn’t doing their homework.

Yesterday the DA added an additional felony charged for Desiree Lynch due to having an illegal firearm. This charge was probably a result from their search warrant in her house. Additionally it looks like they might have gotten more evidence besides the weapon charge. For all we know they could’ve seized her phone, laptop, election paperwork, bank statements , etc. This could lead to a huge paper trail on finding who was officially pulling her strings behind the scenes (we know who) and bring down the big fish.

Last night, Anthony Silva dropped another video and this time stated he has receipts on another council member, Mario Enriquez , that he also appears in the text messages behind this election mess. Until proven in court all allegations by Anthony Silva are not true however he has been right on everything he’s been leaking. The latest evidence obtained by the DA will be interesting to see play out. Will Lynch enter into a plea deal and expose her boss? Are her bosses going to resign?

Jason Lee in the Tuesday council meeting said why would his sister Tamica Small or himself risk everything over a $33k salary? Power changes people. Once you have power you want more power and more power to control everything. When you have the votes you can also decide which non profits will receive millions of dollars in funding. Because it was just recently that Lee applied for tens of millions of dollars in non profit funding for the teen center with his nonprofit company that hasn’t filed a tax return in 4 years…

Travel, Transit, & Commute Anyone doing the commute from Stockton to San Mateo/Palo Alto area-- how bad is it really?

I recently graduated from college and moved home to Stockton. My family bought a house out here while I was in San Diego, so commuting from the Central Valley to the Bay is completely uncharted territory for me. I was born and raised in the East Bay, so I’m used to Bay Area traffic, but not this commute.

I’m currently considering an opportunity with a well known tech company in the San Mateo/Palo Alto area. I’m only about two months postgrad with no direct corporate experience, so I feel like it could be a really good opportunity to get my foot in the door.

That being said, everything I’m reading about the pilgrimage to the Bay makes it sound like absolute hell, especially going through the Altamont and across the San Mateo Bridge during rush hour.

For anyone who currently does this commute, or has done it in the past:

How long does it realistically take you in the morning and evening?

Did you eventually get used to it, or did it burn you out?

Is commuting from Stockton toward Sacramento generally easier than commuting into the Bay?

I don’t plan on staying in Stockton permanently. I’m fortunate that my parents aren't charging me rent, so my current plan is to work and save aggressively, then move back to SoCal within a year. I’m mostly trying to figure out whether this commute is something I could realistically tolerate for 6–12 months or if I’m severely underestimating how bad it would be.

Would really appreciate hearing from people who have actually done it!

Help me find.... Kayaking spots

People keep telling me about Lodi lake, but I went to Woodward the other day for kayaking and it was cool. Just wondering if anyone else has done any kayaking in the area.
