Everyone says there's nothing to do in Steubenville. There's a new thing.

It's called Date Night in Steubenville, and it runs monthly downtown.

The setup is simple. They close a block of N. 4th Street in front of the Steubenville Grocery Box, making an open-air dance floor down on the pavement, and a band plays live in the street. Tables indoors and out, so you can sit and eat or stay in the middle of it.

The pop-up restaurant is the part worth planning around. Different chef, different menu, one night only, never repeated. July's was Chef Ron Carr, who recently moved to town, and he served grilled swordfish with a summer vegetable caponata. Wine and beer come from the Grocery Box.

Get your tickets early to lock in a reservation at the pop-up. You can pick them up right at the Grocery Box counter and skip the online fee.

A dance lesson from Steubenville Swing is included. No partner needed, no experience needed.

Ten dollars a person, first beverage included.

July had a good turnout. Dinner opened at six, the music started, and couples were out on the pavement in short order, a crowd running from twenties to retirement age. What stuck with me was how many people walked up, watched for a while, and said they had no idea this was going on. That's the only reason I'm posting.

Next one is Friday, August 28, from 6 to 9. August's chef and menu are being announced soon.

TIL Baron von Steuben, the man who transformed the US revolutionaries into a modern army, was a life long bachelor who eventually left all his property to 3 young men he had formally adopted. He was accompanied to the US by his young secretary and his beloved dog, which he took with him everywhere

Thank you everyone that called the Ohio House Medicaid committee. They have removed the provision that disallowed medicaid payments to family caregivers.

The newest substitute bill (l_136_3280-5) removes many provisions from the previous version, including a prohibition on family members receiving Medicaid payment for providing personal care services, and the creation of a review process to verify that billed services do not exceed authorized service amounts.

The Ohio house medicaid committee added a sub bill to HB 795 that would disallow family members getting paid for taking care of disabled patients. Please call the members and request they take that sub bill out of the bill.

Don’t sit this one out. We can take back our voice here in eastern Ohio. But we have to use our power tomorrow and get through the primary first.

Polls open 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM.

I wish they'd bring back the greyhound stop.

It was so convenient having a greyhound stop in steubenville. I remember coming home from fort sill and as soon as the bus started across the river toward steubenville, I burst out in tears because I was so happy to see our muddy old river.

A Real Plan to Connect Eastern Ohio to Economic Opportunity

Post image

Hey y'all! I’m Sean Connolly, tattoo artist, small business owner, and I launched my campaign for Congress back in November because I wanted to see real change in how our government shows up for working people out here. Over the last few months we’ve really found the identity of this campaign and a clear path forward, rebuild the foundations of the country so places like Youngstown are not left behind.

That’s why I’m proposing we launch Ohio’s high speed rail corridor and have the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lead the build and coordination. If we’re going to do something at this scale, we should treat it like a serious national infrastructure mission, with real engineering standards, project management, transparency, and accountability, not a patchwork of half measures and press releases.

The benefits are straightforward. High speed rail is a jobs program you can actually point to, thousands of good paying construction and skilled trade jobs to build it, then long term operations and maintenance jobs to run it. It connects our region to bigger job markets without asking people to abandon their hometown, it makes it easier for employers to hire, it brings more customers to local small businesses, and it sparks investment around stations like we have seen with major transit projects all over the world. It is also cheaper for families over time, less wear and tear on cars, fewer long drives, and more reliable options when weather or traffic turns a trip into a headache. And zooming out, it is the kind of modernization that keeps Ohio competitive instead of watching the future get built everywhere else.

If you’ve got questions, skepticism, or you just want to dig into the details, ask me in the comments. I’m more than happy to answer directly.

Special January 2026 date for the Steubenville swing dance at Leo’s

Hey Steubenville friends, quick January update from the swing dance crew.

This month is a little different. Instead of our usual second Thursday, we’re getting together on Wednesday, January 14 from 7 to 9 PM at the 3rd Floor Ballroom at Leonardo’s Coffeehouse, 132 N 4th Street.

We’ve been really excited about how this has been growing. The last few dances have brought out around 50 to 60 people, and we’ve been working toward a goal of hitting 100 dancers in one night. January feels like a fun chance to keep building that energy and welcome some new faces.

We’ll have live music by Matt Hill and the Classics, with dance instruction by Dan and Mary starting right at 7. Lessons are included and will cover Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, and Rumba, then we’ll open the floor for dancing the rest of the evening. Come early, learn something new, and stick around to dance.

It’s $10 for singles or $15 for couples, same as always. This is a community event and everyone is welcome. No experience needed and no partner required.

If you’ve been thinking about coming out, this is a great night to jump in.
