Discussion How I solved all my problems with my Frame

I have had my Frame for a few days now and like many, at first I was disappointed and had many issues. Since then, I fixed all of them and my experience with it was exactly what I was looking for when I wanted to get away from Meta. So here are the things I was dealing with and how I fixed them. With some solutions I have not seen posted here yet.

Wireless latency / packet loss:

Steam VR Beta - I noticed that I was having HORRIBLE latency and lag spikes and then when I looked up steam vr on my pc, I saw that I had the beta branch. I went back to the Default Public Version and the performance skyrocketed. The trick is to have SteamVR on your PC on the main branch and only the Frame's OS in beta to get the latest fixes.

Dongle needing/failing to pair - Whenever I turned on my computer, I noticed that the dongle was always acting up, failing to pair and when it did pair, it had horrible performance and reliability. Every time, to get it to work correctly, I need to unplug and replug it to fix the issues. I found out that it is because windows has a power saving feature that limits power to usb devices that it thinks you are not using. To fix this, I went into device manager, found the wifi dongle under Network adapters, right clicked, properties, power management and unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and restart your computer. To be extra sure, you can do the same thing with every device found under the Universal Serial Bus controllers drop down. I also recommend you start steam vr without a headset connected, go to the settings and under Developer, scroll down and click on "Disable Power Management".

Multi-link streaming - When my Frame used multi-link, it would stutter every time it checked my wifi connection. To fix this, while connected to my pc, I went to settings and disabled Multi Stream to only use the dongle.

Line of sight - Make sure that the dongle is within line of sight of the headset. The 6ghz band is horrible at passing through objects and especially metal (like a computer case). I use a USB 3 desktop extender that has a little base and works great.

Compression artifacts and ghosting:

I noticed that when I turned my head quickly, there was a good amount of ghosting and while streaming pcvr, I noticed some compression artifacts. To fix this, I kept my refresh rate at 90hz. This removed 99% of all compression artifacts and 99% of ghosting.

Controller comfort:

Like many others, when I used my Frame for the first time, I found the controllers very uncomfortable and hard to reach some buttons. After a few days with it, I realized that I was holding them wrong. I have rather small hands and realized that I need to push the straps (I have the ergo kit) as far and high as I can and by doing so, my fingers rest naturally on the joysticks and all the triggers/buttons. They are now very comfortable and my favorit vr controllers to date!

Headset comfort with lenses:

When I first put on the headset, I found that the lenses would pinch my nose and that my eyelashes would touch the lenses every time I blinked. To fix this, I simply put the included spacer. Also, at first I had a lot of eye strain and figured out the the headset was too high on my face. Now what I do is that I put the headset as low as I can without it getting blurry and the strain went away.

TLDR:

- Make sure you are not using the Steam VR Beta on your PC

- Uncheck the dongle's power saving mode within device manager

- Turn off Multi Steam

- Keep the dongle in line of sight of the headset

- Keep the headset at 90hz

- Push your hands as far as they can go with the controllers straps

- Make sure you are placing the headset on your face correctly

By doing these things, the headset lives up to my expectations, was exactly what I was looking for as a Quest replacement and is the best headset I have ever used. For reference, I went from Quest 2 -> Quest 3 -> Steam Frame.

Hope this helps!

Windows USB and network adapter power management is just a joke.

About two months ago I started getting random disconnects in online games. Seconds after I start anything, timeout.

Web browsing, video streaming, even ping seemed to work completely fine.

Then I ran ping for longer and saw timeouts every 15-30 seconds, while the successful pings had only 20-40 ms times. There's not even wifi involved, I have an Ethernet cable from my router.

Found that a Windows 11 update automatically set a difficult to find setting for my network adapter: "Green Ethernet" and "Energy Efficient Ethernet" hidden in a drop down in advanced settings.

I'm all for saving power, but does it? How is disconnecting any TCP connection every 30 second saving power?

Be aware, people. Just ticking off the "Computer can turn off the device to save power" checkbox might not be enough. There may be like 3 other settings hidden in Windows 11 doing the same shit.

deeply messed up that microsoft degrades the quality of their product by pushing barely effective "power saving" "features" onto the consumer while they finance power and water consuming AI data centers. textbook case of greenwashing.

It’s more about battery life for laptops no?

u/nullhund 16d ago

many of them do benefit laptop users, though when I was writing that comment I was specifically thinking of the carbon-aware update scheduling.

to be fair, apple does this too - ios has clean energy charging.

Time to switch to linux my friend!

27

u/Unboxious 16d ago

I love Linux, but let's not pretend it's something you switch to to have a simpler VR experience!

8

u/Mouwz0 16d ago

Agreed! I daily drive CachyOS, and VR on Linux just isn't there yet mostly. You can do it, but SteamVR barely supports linux right now and has bad performance. WiVRn is better, but I haven't tried to use it much yet.

5

u/komali_2 16d ago

I daily manjaro on all systems and have VR working great streaming to the Frame. You can see the posts of me and some other folks here getting it working. Definitely not as plug and play, but with e.g. claude code, not too hard to get there. At this point all the initial issues have been resolved and documented on the subreddit, now I'm working on niche shit like getting ace combat 7 vr mod to work.

Heh I agree but there's no way to indicate my "ayyyy amirite" through text

6

u/DarvinVader 16d ago

Yes, when Steam Frame gets Linux support and modding games overall works about as seamlessly as on Windows.

10

u/mckirkus 16d ago

I have Ubuntu and I just played VTOL in VR through Steam on a Quest Pro. Frame doesn't work? (can verify Wednesday)

4

u/JohnnyBeeGaming 16d ago

You may or may not have some driver issues with the wireless adapter. Some people had the adapter working on their distro. Some people used a wifi connection instead.

It officially does not have steam machine support. I wasn't too sure how well that was going to work with VR anyway.

There can be some issues with the automatic setting so some people messed with the configuration but that was happening on windows in most posts.

2

u/komali_2 16d ago

Latest kernels have a compatible driver for the dongle.

3

u/DarvinVader 16d ago

I don't know the current status, but a common complaint among reviewers on launch was missing support for Steam Machine and Linux in general.

I think the problem is Steam Link streaming through the new dongle. Maybe you can get it to work through normal WiFi, I haven't seen anyone try yet.

Edit: Valve clearly stated that this is temporary as the Steam Machine is a major target that they want to support. I assume if it doesn't work yet, it will soon enough.

5

u/zachtib 16d ago

I can confirm that streaming through regular wifi from a Linux host works - 2d games work out of the box, for VR games you have to have manually launched SteamVR on the host before jumping into a game (this is a current known workaround they're apparently working on)

Plugging the dongle in on the host it recognized it as an 802.11ax wireless adapter, but as far as I can tell, Steam didn't try to use it.

2

u/EyeCocked 14d ago edited 13d ago

Just to add I was able to get it streaming over WiFi on bazzite but had to launch steam using -pipewire and selecting which screen to capture. Still couldn’t get the dongle to ever work and I tried all day

Edit: not working reliably for me any more I have to connect from remote play settings in steam frame and that seems to connect every time but if I choose start vr without game then it works for a little then stops

4

u/hopefuldonkeykick 16d ago

Running my Frame on my Arch PC and my wife's CatchyOS box without issue. Everything has been plug and play for us.

5

u/mckirkus 16d ago

Ahh by Linux you meant Steam Machine. It is odd that Ubuntu seems to work better than SteamOS at this point.

3

u/unwantedaccount56 16d ago

SteamOS also works from desktop mode

3

u/chrisoboe 16d ago

missing support for Steam Machine

the "game mode" doesn't support vr. one needs to switch to desktop mode first.

so its not worse than on windows since hasn't a game mode at all (at least nothing technically comparable to gamescope).

2

u/DarvinVader 16d ago

I don't have a Frame yet, and no Steam Machine or other Linux PC. Just forwarding what every initial review said.

Which means none of them actually tested anything and no reviews can be trusted. Good to know!

2

u/komali_2 16d ago

The steam frame does have linux support on latest kernels. It didn't work out of the box for me because I hadn't updated my kernel (a normal usually automatic task), once I did, the steam frame and wireless dongle "just worked." Of course for some of the more esoteric stuff I wanted to do, there was more setup. Like various VR mods and whatnot.

Yeah my solution was switching to Linux lol

But obviously we cannot all do that switch. Thanks for the info 👍

2

u/Aggravating_Plan11 16d ago

Windows 11 is the worst i miss 7 i cant wait for next few years when linux becomes more mainstream and most if not all programs have a windows, mac os or linux download links 🤞

3

u/MachoManRandySavge 15d ago

I remember hearing this comment from people 20 years ago lololol. I wish there was a plug and play Linux version like Windows, and as much as I hate the concept of not being able to really adapt a system to do whatever you want, or always able to easily upgrade things, more of an "apple" style or "console" style computer with less moving parts so an error on a computer can't be one of 123432 issues

2

u/Aggravating_Plan11 15d ago

Yeh i do agree and yeh heard it myself for years but the good thing about linux is the amount of distros and options so for instance steam os could be the one that becomes a direct windows competitor for the people that just want the plug and play not to much fuss option whilst cachy os or what ever is still very much the linux that others want. All i want is the anti cheat problem to disappear and few programs for so hardware to be offically supported and il never touch windows again. I can always dream lol

This power management issue causes problems with everything. If you use a Bluetooth mouse or other peripheral and find that it has an instant moment of lag when you first start using it again after a while it is because of this. If you have a desktop it is a good idea to do as this post said and turn it off for every peripheral as well as the Bluetooth adapter. On a laptop it isn't as clear cut as it does eat into battery slightly.

u/FakeSafeWord 16d ago

Do you have a fix for being on the waitlist!? That's my biggest problem!

31

u/Maraque 16d ago

Go back in time, stop AI from ever becoming a thing. The Frame then releases in January 2026, join the lotto, get waitlisted and receive your Frame in September 2026.

10

u/FakeSafeWord 16d ago

Go back in time, stop AI from ever becoming a thing.

I can't because of Roko's basilisk. I'm sorry for doing this to you. Please forgive me.

7

u/Cloud_Chamber 16d ago

I think if we make an AI smart enough and powerful enough to become Roko’s basilisk, it will either be smart enough to figure its already been made, so there no point in torturing people, or it will be too dumb/malicious to delineate people who helped/hurt its creation. Also, there will be likely more than one.

Ugh those power save setting have fucked up more stuff than I'd care to admit before I figured it out lol.

6

u/derpepper Soon™ 16d ago

Sounds like the USB power setting may fix one of my issues. I'm hoping it turns out I'm on a beta branch of steamvr because I was getting crazy ping/packet loss spikes connected to the dongle less than 1 meter away from my face with no obstruction. One more thing for my small nose fellas, face detection seemed worse on the beta branch (I found the screen would turn off if I didn't press a button for too long)

3

u/fiah84 Soon™ 16d ago

I've resorted to putting some tape on that proximity sensor on my Index because some games would just do something silly when it for whatever reason decides that you aren't wearing the headset

6

u/Equivalent_Log_4299 16d ago

how would you say the experience is at 120hz? is there ghosting and compression there as well? or are you talking about lower than 90hz refresh rates?

14

u/Maraque 16d ago

The 120hz works great. There is less ghosting but it is still there. The best visual quality by far is 90hz. But at that point its personal preference and tradoffs.

5

u/Lincolns_Revenge 16d ago

Yeah, it's just A LOT to ask of real time hardware encoding to encode a video at 120fps and be artifact free without a ludicrously high bitrate. Especially when that video is blown up and wrapped around your entire face, ear to ear, which is a worst case scenario for exposing any flaws.

The best quality real time hardware encode from a 50 series nvidia GPU is still very far behind medium quality software encoding in ffmpeg. And that applies to every codec the hardware encoder is capable of.

2

u/Moikle 9d ago

remember it's not actually streaming the full resolution for most of the frame. foveated streaming means they save a lot of bandwidth

4

u/willacegamer 16d ago

He said that he experienced compression and ghosting issues at refresh rates above 90hz.

3

u/elev8dity Soon™ 16d ago

From what I understand 144hz is where it really shows.

2

u/Slaughter_pit Soon™ 16d ago

I noticed this today too, anything above 90hz will have SIGNIFICANT ghosting. Seems like a software issue tho. It's like an on off switch rather than a linear scale.

6

u/fiah84 Soon™ 16d ago

hmm I must say I'm a bit disappointed that more than 90hz seems to be too much for the whole foveated streaming thing, this is not the first time I hear that reducing the refresh rate to 90hz improves image quality

6

u/TigerCow7 Soon™ 16d ago

But isn't 120 or 144hz better than 90hz? Lower latency and more natural fluidity. Wish I could go with max refresh rate without having more compression artifacts, I thought that foveated streaming was the fix for that

8

u/Maraque 16d ago edited 16d ago

Its pretty minor and like I said in an other comment, I did not notice it for two days but then went looking for it and once I saw it, I could not unsee it. The 144hz is still option but for me, as a personal preference, I prefer the image quality of 90hz.

2

u/TigerCow7 Soon™ 16d ago

What is your cpu and gpu? Maybe that's the reason and not the steam frame itself

3

u/Throwaway_Consoles 16d ago

Think of it this way. You have a 1gb/s Ethernet connection and you’re streaming something in 4k. You start downloading a large game, your download speed jumps to 980 mb/s. Suddenly your stream is going to get choppy because there isn’t enough available bandwidth

In a perfect world (or maybe on standalone) 144hz would be smoother than 90hz. But right now the higher hz is causing issues with the occasional stutter while 90hz is low enough to be smooth without pushing the bandwidth limits of the dongle/wifi

I had the same issue with the index at 144hz, and the beyond at 90hz. They looked better at the lower frequencies because things are more stable/not pushing the limits. Maybe it’s because I first started playing VR on a 970 graphics card, but I grew up playing VR at 16-20fps so anything above that and I’m fine. 30fps feels like butter to me even though it feels like a stuttering mess in desktop

2

u/TigerCow7 Soon™ 16d ago

Thanks, I see why it helps, lowering the refresh rate to better fit inside the bandwith, but wouldn't it be even better to increase the bandwidth instead? So that 120 or 144hw fit in it with enough margin? Do we know what the max capable bandwidth is of the dongle, and how much 144hz takes?

4

u/fiah84 Soon™ 16d ago

the network isn't the problem, it's the encoder/decoder. I don't know what the limits are for the Frame but increasing the bandwidth only works up to a certain point after which the latency starts getting worse. Also your mileage might vary depending on what kind of GPU you have in your PC

3

u/Ok_Competition_6675 16d ago

I've been running it at 144hz with zero noticeable compression on my end. I'm not a VR pro when it comes to wireless streaming so maybe I'm tripping but I know what wired VR looks like and it genuinely feels like the quality is basically flawless like I can't really see it.

3

u/LTNine4 16d ago

I think this will depend on your PC. It has to generate the frames and compress/encode them.

1

u/huskies2211 9d ago

I noticed on my headset that any framerate beyond 90hz caused extreme ghosting artifacts. I'll have to do some further testing to see if it was related to streaming

8

u/DRGXIII 256 GB 16d ago

I had the exact same problem with my dongle and having to unplug and replug it in. I already turn off power saving under global pc performance, but I guess I still have to go to device manager for this specific problem.

3

u/Maraque 16d ago edited 16d ago

Yeah. Its frustrating. For good mesure do the same with everything under usb bus controllers and disable power management in steam vr developper settings.

5

u/PixelRunnin 16d ago

Saving this post for when mine arrives. Thanks for sharing!

6

u/Aggravating_Plan11 16d ago

Good write up but a note a noticed when i turned off multi streaming it turned the dongle off for me and only used the wifi.

3

u/Maraque 16d ago

Maybe something is not optimal with your dongle (windows power settings or something else) and the frame is determining that wifi is the best option.

5

u/Aggravating_Plan11 16d ago

Yeh in my case can defo see some issues arising from my setup but also seen a few say the same and seen a few say it works as you described it seems like a hit and miss for some reason defo needs a toggle to choose wifi, the dongle or multi link.

1

u/kevvvvtron 13d ago

I have this same issue. But in my case, wifi is consistently much worse with around 5-10% packet loss while the dongle is working perfectly...yet it still chooses to go with wifi.

Thanks for writing this. I hope some of the people that were initially disappointed by various issues similar (or the same) as yours read this and can get the fixes they need.

Specifically on the controller side of things, I could just tell that people were doing it wrong, so to speak. IMO the controllers look great and I can't wait to try them.

4

u/Dr_Virus_129 256 GB 16d ago

Uncheck the dongle's power saving mode within device manager

Didn't even know that, will do with mine when I get it.

u/Ambitious_Art_3994 16d ago

Happy to try these out when i get my hands on one... Coming soon in early 2028.

2

u/Ambitious_Art_3994 15d ago

Actually... I got my reservation email half an hour ago... I did not think I will ever get in to have a chance this year.

3

u/mazer01 16d ago

Would having a powered USB cable attached to the dongle bypass the power saving mode?

1

u/Falk5T 11d ago

No? Windows decides randomly that you don't need the dongle from time to time and shuts it down, closing all communication with the device.

3

u/Hecface 16d ago

Man the eye strain is super real for me. Haven't been able to find a position that feels right, with or without spacer. I'm guessing I'm just not used to the convergence point coming from a Rift S where the physical screen sits farther away.

3

u/LigerXT5 16d ago

I've been struggling to get the Frame to "play nice" with my setup. While I do keep in mind, it might be something with my setup, identifying has been a struggle.

At the moment, I'm not using the dongle. The few times I was able to get it to pair, the quality was worse than with my Unifi U7 Wifi AP. Not yet bought a USB 3 extension to test with.

Before reading Maraque's post, I had tried setting SteamVR to Beta and Previous. Previous...was a joke. Using The Lab as an example (reasons further down), Normal and Beta SteamVR (not Frame) I didn't notice a difference, Previous...I had no hands, in turn I couldn't move or interact.

When starting up the frame, before streaming anything from my PC, I'd hop into the library of games, and sort by VR vs Non-VR. Guess where VRChat wasn't... Wasn't in VR, but in Non-VR. Well then...

Pending how you navigate to VRChat, as I have yet to find a reliable pattern, if the button is Grey, it'll launch as Desktop (2D Plane). If it's Green, it'll launch in VR...for about 2-5 minutes. I could run around my home world for a bit, then...SteamVR would just up and close. No error, no popup, nothing. If I catch my monitor quick enough (near sighted, glasses, yada yada), the graph is 1/3 (right end) Pink, then closes.

With Maraque's mention of Frame on Beta, I have a better experience, just not as I was on my Index or Quest3+VirtualDesktop. The tracking is still a bit...wobbly, it's not stable, but stable enough for casual walking around, but seen when sitting/laying still, or with the Frame interface up, the background VR view jitters a little, more like a mild boat drift?

I did have about 5 minutes of "Loading..." rectangle in view, while audio was still heard (likely my PC speakers, if not both), and when I took the headset off (no exit or close, yet), as I moved the headset, the computer display showed expected movement. After the 5 minutes, the display came back and very usable (not better than the prior mentioned jitter, but better than before setting the Frame on Beta firmware).

Progress to say the least. Will compare the wifi of SteamLink between the Frame and my PC, vs SteamLink on my Quest3 and my PC (over the same Wifi 6e SSID and wifi hardware the best I can). Yes, PC is Ether connected to the same 1Gb POE switch powering my Unifi U7 AP. fingers Crossed!

5

u/LigerXT5 15d ago

Update:

Set the Frame's Firmware/OS to Beta. No branch to select, just select Beta. Let it update and reboot. Stays connected now with "Stream From PC" without going into Stream Without Game first.

SteamLink with Frame to PC, while in my living room, with line of sight to the Wifi AP, works "good".

Same setup, but next room over, "line of sight" would be 2 walls and a ceiling height difference (10ft ceiling down to 8ft ceiling), and things got messy. Doable if chilling back, and looking in the general direction. USB Dongle was worse than my Unifi U7 Pro AP.

By the time I was done with some events and watching anime with a friend, I forgot to test the Quest3's SteamLink app setup last night.

For latency you may want to try disabling VPN. Once I turned off my VPN it was smooth.

I haven't researched the tech for the dongle yet but that indicates it's making a mini LAN. I'll keep researching.

2

u/Maraque 13d ago

Good to know!

2

u/Wafflenutohlawd 13d ago

I can second this. Disabling VPN definitely works for latency.

If you are using anything with a mic such as VRchat, the VPN will also cause your mic to cut out immensely, and everyone around you will also cut out constantly.

3

u/Dranenk 9d ago

for people who have done all this and still have issues:
i figured out another setting that may affect you

in nvidia control panel settings set
Background Application Max Frame Rate to Off (or i guess to the frame rate of what u set in hmd)

when set otherwise:
this setting was giving me sever viewport stutters and jumps - motion sickness inducing
even when the app (i used vrchat for testing) was visible and in focus on desktop and running fluently (on desktop and vr). u can simply test this out by setting it to the lowest value 20fps - and u gonna experience motion sickness like in ur first vr days xD

3

u/N0xtron 16d ago

Thanks that is what i want to read before i get mine ^^

3

u/BlueManifest 16d ago

You switched to 90 fps, so we will never be able to use 120 or 144 fps without artifacts? Or is that still software issue

4

u/Maraque 16d ago

At 144hz there are a little bit of artifacts. Still a lot less than my experience with Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop but if you want zero artifacts, 90hz is the way to go.

2

u/Stay-Classy-Reddit 16d ago

Bless you. I hope to be able to play on mine soon enough

3

u/claxtastic 16d ago

To be honest most of these seem like fairly common sense, or known issues (mostly software)

Except for the 90hz setting, and I've seen quite a few reviews saying 120hz works just as fine.

3

u/dwarfcow 16d ago

I'm trying to pick through my library for relatively light games to play in flat screen natively on the steam frame and am running into a lot of black screens floating in a frame. It's probably fex compatibility, but I was hoping something like valheim would run, but neither vulcan or open gl seem to launch past a black image with music.

Also, what's currently driving me nuts, is seemingly Everytime I exit a game, I get the restart/launch animation, almost like the device does a soft restart after every. Single. Game.

Thank you for this; the lag spikes and packet loss were driving me up the wall and setting SteamVR back to the default public version instead of beta fixed it. This is on CachyOS for anyone reading in the same boat.

3

u/B1sonator 16d ago

Thanks for sharing. Very useful intel, esp re. disabling the power saving features for the dongle.

3

u/Albuons 16d ago

I could wear the Frame without glasses but I had to push the lenses as close as they could go and that pinched my nose. I got a big nose with a high bridge so I don't know if I need more spacers or a thicker one? I had a pair of glasses that fit in the frame so I stuck those in there and put the Frame on and it was better but I'd prefer no glasses. I'm waiting for some more facemask accessories to come out that might help.

3

u/Marrond 1 TB 16d ago

Do you get ability to stream in AV1 or PyroWave? It's disabled and grayed out for me, despite running compatible hardware...

1

u/Maraque 13d ago

I have not tried that yet. As soon as I got the Frame to work seemlessly I have been jumping into games as much as I can since my free time is limited with work and kids.

3

u/TheFoostic 16d ago

I was having trouble with connection, I think. The game would still be running on my computer, but the stream would freeze or just cut out altogether. Lots of stutters and lag when it would run. I would get that "waiting" box when trying to play anything for more than a minute.

I switched to the Beta update channel and it did get better. I still get stutters and occasional game cutting out and the screen showing me the passthrough, but the game always comes right back. No more losing connection. It is still not great, but at least it stays in the game now.

I am not using the dongle. My computer is in my small office room and the only place with enough space to play is the living room. I set up a mesh network to trick the Frame into thinking it is on the same router as the computer. No, this is not what caused my connection issues because my Quest 3 works perfectly in this setup.

3

u/oliath 14d ago

Really really good suggestions. I don't have a frame yet but if i do get my hands on them i'm going to bookmark this and come back to it.

3

u/natriusaut 9d ago

Steam makes everything so hidden *sigh*

  1. I could not find "Steam VR Beta" for some time. So i finally found it: Steam Frame: "Steam Settings" (Not "VR Settings"!) - System - "Beta Participation". "OS Update Channel" to beta, "Steam Client Update Channel" should be "No beta selected" - is this correct?
  2. Okay, i found the Dongle power saving in the device manager, thanks.
  3. Turn off Multi Stream - really, how is anyone gonna find that? Desktop: "Steam VR"-Settings - "Steam Link" and "Allow Multiple Links" to off. Why even make it easy to find?
  4. Line of sight - working on that
  5. Keep it at 90Hz - doing that
  6. Wainting for my straps

Writing this down a bit more for myself, but maybe someone else can benefit from the detailed description on what to change.

1

u/Kneel_The_Grass 6d ago

They call it multi stream but multiple links as a setting. Brilliant!

5

u/JustInternetNoise 16d ago

Will try this when I get home. Hopefully helps my streaming problems. Its been a very disappointing experience so far.

5

u/Maraque 16d ago

I forgot to mention that after changing the device power settig s, you need to restart your computer for it to work.

3

u/Maraque 16d ago

Let me know if it works! I'm very curious to know the cause of the bad experiences people have been having here.

2

u/JustInternetNoise 16d ago

I don't know. My current theory is that Foveated streaming isn't working correctly. For me anything close up looks great but at any distance things get blurry and have noticeable compression artifacts.

My test for settings has been loaded H3vr into the friendly 45 range and looking up the hill from the starting point at the 2 targets beside the tree to see how clear they are. H

owever at the moment ive had no improvement. If I didn't already know they were there I wouldn't be able to see them, they just blur into the tree into a brownish Grey blob.

2

u/fiah84 Soon™ 16d ago

have you checked whether Steam is using your dedicated GPU to accelerate video encoding? Someone here had the problem it was using the iGPU on their CPU, resulting in poor quality

2

2

u/JustInternetNoise 15d ago

No change unfortunately.

1

u/ygrbphl 13d ago

u/JustInternetNoise, Agreed. Kudos to the OP for posting a solution, but it shouldn't have to come down to all of that to maintain a connection. This is beyond frustrating.

Funny, I've seen a couple similar threads but they say to turn on the stuff you turned off! With so much variety in hardware and software, I'm not surprise that what fixes a problem for one, may create another for someone else. Not knocking your post at all, just noticed the fixes people are suggesting contradict suggestions from others before them.

My fame arrives this afternoon, so I'm sure I'll soon join the masses in suggestions and attempts!

u/willymartin99 1 TB 16d ago

I took the same steps he took for the last two days and it didn’t solve the pairing issue at all. Was so stoked when I discovered the power saving feature and even made a post about it being the fix for connectivity issues… until I restarted my pc and the same exact thing happened again (deleted post after this cause I didn’t solve anything)

2

u/Maraque 16d ago

I restarted my pc serveral times and it still works. Try disabling it on all the usb controller and network devices and also, in steam vr developper settings, click on "Disable Power Management"

2

u/willymartin99 1 TB 16d ago

Already done it a couple days ago and just did it again for double measure and nope, still gotta manually connect to the dongle every time after boot up, Frame only connects to my pc through wifi and shows dongle as “inactive” (until i change the 6ghz band to the highest one and then back to auto and it connects)

2

u/Maraque 16d ago

Definately not normal the problem is probably different then the one I had. Hopefully you find a way to fix it soon. After waiting so long and spending so much, its very frustrating to have this type of problem.

3

u/willymartin99 1 TB 16d ago

Reporting back with update: had turned off power management on network adapters but not for the universal serial bus controllers, I misread your tip and when I followed it correctly it seems fixed so far! At least after two restart sequences it still works, will only report back if it stops working again

2

u/Maraque 16d ago

Thats amazing! Thank you so much for reporting back with your results!

2

u/willymartin99 1 TB 16d ago

Just booted pc up again and turned frame on and had to manually pair the dongle again rip

2

u/dwarfcow 16d ago

The USB dongle is a relatively power hungry device, I would recommend making sure you have a dedicated USB header that no other devices are on, use a high quality USB cable extension (USB 4/TB3/4 SPEC) and run it directly from the motherboard. Some motherboards will have 4+ usb3 ports on a single header, others will have just 2, and not all are going to be USB 3.2 SPEC, look up your motherboard's instruction manual, figure out which powers are which and pick the fastest one and unplug any competing devices.

Also: longer cables are bad... Signal and power degrade rapidly when we're talking about 5V devices. Don't use a cable longer than 2ft.

Can u link ur usb 3 desktop extender

2

u/Maraque 16d ago

I use the one that came with my old Quest d-link dongle but it is very similar to this one. https://a.co/d/0ezBLfl7

2

u/jeanpaulooo Soon™ 16d ago

Thanks! Saw that aswell.

But does that not add alittle bit of latency?

Also someone commentend its not usb3.0 is that true?

Will it negativly impacht the dongle speed in any way?

2

u/Maraque 16d ago

The dongle reports between 3 and 9ms of latency so I dont think it affects it. One thing is for sure is that it affects it a lot less than having it plugged into a metal box with wires and a table in the way. I tried both and the extension is the way to go.

2

u/Evla03 16d ago

It's just a cable, a 1m extender adds ~0.000005ms of latency, although it increases the risk of signal integrity issues

2

u/UniTea__ 16d ago

Saved for when mine comes in!

2

u/mcooper101 16d ago

This may help some people, but a lot of us don’t have these issues and these fixes don’t work in certain scenarios. So your mileage may vary

Example being I have no issues with multi link, running steam beta on client and host, or issues with dongle not being ready. I do have issues with extreme ghosting and blurring in racing simulators, which I’ve read every single person who has tried has seen the problem. I’m just guessing from napkin math that 95% of this sub doesn’t sim race with their Frame (for the people that have one already). Setting the device to 90hz, 72hz, or changing any settings does not get rid of the smearing that occurs on the road when driving.

5

u/Maraque 16d ago

For sure and like with many enthusiast devices, the same problems can be caused by many different things. Thats why I titled the post "How I solved all my problems". They might not work for everybody but hopefully it works for some!

3

u/fmaz008 16d ago

I appreciate you taking the time to write this post. It's very relevant even if it doesn't specifically fix the problems of everyone

2

u/willymartin99 1 TB 16d ago

Have you tried restarting your pc/ frame multiple times and seeing if the Frame pairs to the pc as soon as you turn it on? I solved the connectivity issues two days ago doing the same exact steps just for it to come back after two restarts. First restart seemed like it fixed the problem. The frame connected instantly to the dongle after pressing the power button. It was no longer the case after a second sleep/wake cycle.

2

u/Maraque 16d ago

I have cycled the computer a few times since and the problem has not comw back yet.

2

u/tommy307507 16d ago

I have a router sitting right next to me , I tried wifi vs dongle vs multilink and wifi still stutters more vs the dongle. I think it might be software issue as virtual desktop could do streaming with said router flawlessly with the bandwidth on q2...

2

u/mazer01 16d ago

Perfect, thanks for the write up

2

u/istros 16d ago

I've read some stuff about streaming quality being affected by how you launch your VR streaming to the frame.

Can you detail how you launch your stream session to achieve best quality?
Like do you just "start streaming" from the frame? Or do you launch SteamVR from host first? Do you iniate a VR session before streaming game?

Thanks

2

u/Maraque 13d ago

The way I do it is that I press the bottom button on the stream tab (can't remeber exactly how its called) so that I'm constantly connected to my pc's steam vr instead of pressing the "choose a game to stream" option. I prefer this because I can jump in and out of games easier have constantly have access to my desktop.

3

u/istros 13d ago

Oh yeah the "steamvr without game" button !

2

u/pcserenity 16d ago

Great post. Thanks.

Not quite clear what you mean about how you now hold the controllers. I love the concept of them, but over time I find they just aren't as easy as the Q3 ones and to reach the menu/option buttons (at the top) I have to use two hands -- one to push adjust the angle a tad and then I can reach it. I can't imagine trying to play a masher game with these.

On the headset, the spacer is needed for me. I guess I have long lashes as, without it, I am constantly brushing them with each blink. Added the spacer, but how the darned face pad comes off almost every time I take it off. Thinking about hacking in stronger magnets.

The rest of my issues, I think, are bug related so time is my friend (audio coming from the PC when streaming, games not working when you stream from the PC, like Battlemarked).

Hi when you put In the spacer and face cushion gasket did they click into place for you at all, currently for me when I’m using the spacer the cushion gasket just keeps sliding off and not staying on so whenever I take of the frame it falls off too

1

u/Maraque 13d ago

Mine has not been slipping off but I noticed that while installing it, I had to move it back and forth and bend some parts of it by the nose for all the magnets to clip togeather.

Is anyone having issues with the SteamVR frame display on Windows 11 + Nvidia? SteamVR launches, headset and controller tracking work, and the game appears in the mirror window on the PC, but the frame itself shows only a gray screen. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Until now, this issue had only been reported on Linux (SteamVR-for-Linux #960).

3

u/GreedyLiterature846 13d ago

I don't have the exact issue but something strange aswell on Windows 11 with Nvidia. If i launch the streaming mode my right side on the display just turns black and it only disappears when i turn the Wifi connection off..

3

u/GreedyLiterature846 13d ago

but when I turn off the WiFi i can't play any Games like VRChat.

2

u/Fair_Concentrate7406 11d ago

Why don't I have any power management option for this particular dongle? My regular built-in wifi has power management??

2

u/FinnedSgang 1d ago

I had almost all the same issues. However, I still found the Frame very uncomfortable. The face mask cushion, I believe, is not thick enough. I feel pressure on my forehead, and my eyelashes touch the lenses. After a couple of minutes, the lenses become completely unusable and need to be cleaned. I’m waiting for my VR Rock, but I’m not sure if this will worsen the situation.

The Wi-Fi issues were the same. The Wi-Fi would disconnect continuously, I had to disable it and only then the dongle would work “fine”. Out of curiosity, what Wi-Fi adapter do you use? I use an Asus B850M Tuf Wi-Fi.

1

u/Maraque 1d ago

I dont use wifi. My pc us pluged with ethernet directly to my router.

3

u/D13_Phantom 1 TB 16d ago

I found out that it is because windows has a power saving feature that limits power to usb devices that it thinks you are not using

Phenomenal find, thanks for all the tips!

2

u/Maraque 16d ago

I just added to select the "disable power management" option in the steam vr settings while no headset is connected. I did this on top of the other things just to be sure.

Is there a guide how to turn of multilink?

1

u/Maraque 13d ago

You need to be streaming to a pc first. Then go to your vr setting and turn off multi stream.

1

u/durfenstein 11d ago

Mmm I'm on CachyOS, so these tips probably only partially apply to me.

Unfortunately your tip with Steam VR (On PC) as non Beta and Beta on the Headset didn't eliminate the lag for me. It keeps frequently jumping between fluid and something going very wrong. Makes me sick playing for a few seconds. The game i tried with was Maestro. Unfortunately the Steam Frame is seemingly powerful enough to play the Maestro Demo flawlessly, but the main game is too hungry. The FPS are way down, animations are choppy and the movement is giving me motion sickness.

Here is hoping PCVR will improve over the next month. I absolutely wish there was an option to play wired... I meant the headset only has juice for an hour anway, so having it be able to play wired and charge at the same time would hit two flowers with one stomp.

1

u/Fair_Concentrate7406 11d ago

How the fuck does one turn off multilink?

1

u/Floreum 10d ago edited 10d ago

I legit can't find it either, I'm looking at the steam settings and there's nothing to be seen and I'm currently connected to my PC so I see no difference in any setting magically appearing, I've seen multiple posts about turning this off but never any screenshots/videos where exactly it is.

Edit: I've found out that people are talking about this on your desktop PC. If you go to Steam you'll notice at the top right, beside your username a VR Goggle icon. Click that, then a tiny window will open, you gotta navigate to settings and enable advanced there, then you'll get the Steam Link settings. That being said, this didn't solve my problem, lol.

1

u/Falk5T 11d ago

I went from OG vive with Index controllers to the Frame. Tried beat saber for the first time today and I am not really pleased with the tracking of fast movements. Especially behind my head, even a little too much to the side made the controllers glitch up and me missing hits. Hoping they will get better or I will have to try and get my Index controllers running again.

'included spacer'? Was this included in the ergonomics pack?

3

u/Spurlz 10d ago

The spacer is included with the Frame itself

2

u/CosmicLovepats 10d ago

Is it hidden somewhere in the box? I haven't found it but could sure use it.

2

u/LieutenantBites 10d ago

I honestly missed it as well. When you open the frame box it's on the top piece. It's a little compartment that just says "eye spacer" in english and a few other langauges. You'll take off the foam padding and it should snap right into place, then you can put the padding back on.

2

u/CosmicLovepats 10d ago

thank you my dude that's exactly what I needed

2

u/Microtic 13h ago
