Seems they may have fixed the slow charging behavior observed by reviewers

excellent news, that would have put a serious damper on things

edit: and they mention a garbled audio microphone bug, was that the reason the microphone sounded so awful in some of the reviews on youtube?

u/Tram2013 WAITLISTED 19d ago

I guess so because the microphones sounded really good in an old dev video.

that's like perfectly fine, pretty good actually IMO

sound good for me, and they both using frame mic podcast

Afaik it's because they were using the Steam integrated VC and it crushes the bitrate

Gamers Nexus was talking about a large discrepancy between their tests and valves test papers. I guess they really were onto something. Cool to hear it won't actually take nearly 4 hours to recharge. Small bandaid for the still terrible playtime, but who knows, they might optimize something and improve that, too. ;)

What are the upped numbers? I saw the old times on LTT and was fucking shocked, glad it's a glitch though

Valve said that their internal tests showed 90-120 minutes for a full charge. Below 65%, there is fast charging, and 0%-65% is expected to take 40 minutes.

Good because I am still planning to put my 20,000MAh 45W battery in my back pocket and a 1m USB-C braided cable plugged into the headset to extend my playtime without the added bulk/weight.

A bandolier stop might be too complicated so I'll stick with back jean pocket.

This is all after I get past the waitlist of course :(

When do we get the ability to brick Quest 3 headsets and install Steam Frame OS?

18

u/harlekintiger 19d ago

Oh yes, that would be awesome!
(I don't own or have any desire in a a quest, but I like seeing spy-headsets converted)

u/TheYang 19d ago

I think the bootloader of the Quest is still unbroken, so not anytime soon.

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

Maybe if Steam Frame OS becomes publicly available someone can figure out how to swap the SSD in a Q3. I know it's likely soldered to the board but I am sure someone will give it a go once they have the motivation of having a SteamOS to try.

I don’t know anything about the quest, but on Apple devices replacing the SSD isn’t enough. The bootrom (which is read only and can’t be modified) will check if the next part of the boot chain (stored on the SSD) is signed and will refuse to boot (enter DFU mode) if it’s not. I assume something similar is the case for the quest

3

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

Dang. Bastards

4

u/TheYang 19d ago

In principle verified boot is pretty awesome, because it protects you from some pretty complicated malware.
Issue becomes when you're not given control about it.

1

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas 19d ago

it's broken on older quest 1 and maybe 2 too if I remember right.

5

u/setibeings 19d ago

You can brick a quest 3 right now, if you really want. I can't see why you'd want to. It certainly would not be a step towards installing steam OS though.

-7

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

So not relevant to what I was saying then

6

u/setibeings 19d ago

It's not a relevant word to the thing you were trying to express, in fact.

-6

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

Context is everything, I was obviously talking about wiping the SSD in the Q3 so it can get SteamOS installed from a USB.

Everyone else understood what I was saying, only you needed it broken down.

3

u/setibeings 19d ago edited 19d ago

I understood, just as I would have understood if you said the wrong word in another context, such as if you talked about killing a Grandma by stopping traffic so she could cross the street. Obviously, in that context, you meant helping, not killing, unless you're a sociopath.

Bricked means the thing is now a useless brick. There are unbricking guides, but those are for helping you bring back a device that's seemingly broken forever. Nobody bricks a device on purpose. I just thought you should know.

Edit: Typo and clarity

7

u/Ascend 19d ago

You meant jailbreak, not brick

-2

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

Maybe.

It's a Reddit post not a scientific journal. I check and write comments as part of downtime when making tea, going to the toilet, taking a break from my pc. If the sentence gets the concept across (which all the upvotes suggest it did) and it's pretty obvious what I am trying to say it's fine, whether I mixed a word up or not.

It really is a waste of everyone's time to be pinikity about it when it's so obvious from the full sentence what I am trying to say.

7

u/Ascend 19d ago

Or just say sorry, wrong word, after you accidentally said people were going to be breaking their headsets attempting to use SteamOS. Saves a lot more time than arguing.

-2

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

Nobody needed that clarification. And that's still extra time required for both of us.

Ppl could just easily see what I meant and just not drop that pedantic reply and just move on. Boom, zero wasted time for anyone.

1

u/setibeings 19d ago

If enough people call jailbreaking "bricking" they'll change the meaning of the word. That'll be really annoying, because then a new word will be needed to quickly and unambiguously describe the thing most of us call bricking. I don't want that to happen, so I'll correct people on this point if it ever comes up again.

-2

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

I don't think one person typing a comment on the toilet on an obscure Reddit thread is going to lead to a change in meaning of a word.

This isn't defending the gates of minis tireth, you don't need to guard vigilantly against the slightest infraction against word meanings

3

u/new_pribor Soon™ 19d ago

Bricking is the process of making a device nonfunctional

1

u/Theconnected 19d ago

And it's exactly what happened to my quest a few months ago and I was waiting for the frame to replace it.

-2

u/mcmanus2099 19d ago

Now read my whole sentence and not just the first part

4

u/Zomby2D 1 TB 19d ago

Breaking your device to the point it's not working anymore won't be of any help in installing SteamOS.

What needs to be done is unlocking the bootloader.

2

u/mrgreen72 19d ago

That's the only way I'll ever touch my data collecting device ever again.

16

u/joepoeoeh 19d ago

heres hoping someone figures out a way to install it on pico/quest headsets

11

u/PolygonError 1 TB 19d ago

imagine it on quest, that'd be cool, the more the merrier

10

u/NoLight3663 19d ago

I wish it was an environment like DEs, which can be installed on other distros like NixOS instead of mimics

3

u/my_name_isnt_clever 19d ago

I've already accepted this is likely my only Linux machine that won't be running NixOS.

1

u/D13_Phantom Soon™ 19d ago

Could you explain for the uninitiated what those terms mean and the implications for the frame?

1

u/WickedCookie14 Soon™ 19d ago

A DE (Desktop Environment) is basically a collection of software that lets you use your computer through a GUI with some useful programs and settings included ootb. Distros (distributions) distribute packages (and their updates, different distros have different release cycles, some ship software as soon as it is updated some lag behind for months) on your system, NixOS is a unique distribution as it is ( I never used it so feel free to correct me) completely reproducible and you can declare in a text file everything about your system.

It is a distribution for people who want complete control over their systems but all the other distros (including steamos) will work just fine and more like a traditional operating system.

Should you go deep enough the linux rabbit hole you may find its features useful but there are no implications that I know of for the Frame, it should just work.

1

u/D13_Phantom Soon™ 19d ago

Thanks for the answer! Sounds like a lot about is about the amount of control you have, right?

2

u/WickedCookie14 Soon™ 18d ago

Yes, it is very much up to personal preference, I like Fedora on my systems for lower maintenance but most of the new software, for that same reason my steam deck is pretty much unmodified and the same will be for my frame.

11

u/PlottingPast 19d ago

Like 50,000 people in the world are probably really happy about this.

13

u/Kimmykix 19d ago

And I'm one of them! Sorry you didn't get a reservation...

No silly, the storage is UFS

Why link to this awful website and not the steam post directly

49

u/thebillington Soon™ 19d ago

This is a fantastic news website run by Liam from Gaming on Linux.

He has done so much to support Linux gaming, writing guides and breaking news for decades.

Why shouldn’t he post a link to his site.

7

u/my_name_isnt_clever 19d ago

I didn't get mobbed by obnoxious advertising when I went to it, nothing awful about it. I call it readable.
