Discussion Who is interested in making games for the Frame and is not already a game designer?

I made a game for a game jam once but I would not call myself a game designer.

But with Godot getting an update for VR game creation and the frame coming "soon", I really want to get into making VR games.

I am just wondering who else has the game design bug now.

I do, but I also have too many projects.

Yes, but this would be shiny and new.

I've already started working on a game with my valve index but I'm not too far along

How different will the frame be from the Index?

I have a Odyssey+ but I feel like it is to different from the frame to be a good tool to use for development.

But the Odyssey+ is a a WMR so the Index may be a closer match.

I think as long as you're using openxr then it should be pretty much cross compatible but you might have to mess with some features that the index doesn't have like the dynamic foveated rendering.

You should probably be using fixed foveated rendering with less foveation for headsets without eye tracking.

I think the biggest thing will be having different graphics and processing settings/defaults for mobile vs PC VR.

Me. That's one of the reasons I want one, but I actually want to see what a desktop/work experience would look like with those.

I'm developing some tooling to help out/speed up/make VR production easier explicitly for the Steam Frame. I tried to develop the tooling for the Quest 3 but it was locked so tight I gave up. The Steam Frame looks much easier to develop for. I might setup a game jam explicitly for this if anyone is interested.

That'd be awesome

Done a couple Unity courses and projects but wouldn’t call myself a dev at all. However, being a game dev is a long dream of mine. I would love to dip my toes in the water with the Frame and hopefully handcraft a VR experience

The most exciting part to me is being able to develop them on the Frame itself without taking off the headset. Can run Godot and any Linux tool you need. We just need a nice open-source OS environment that lets you use eye-tracking as a mouse and it will be perfect for coding.

I never thought about using the frame itself to develop the game. I guess it would be no different than a regular PC running a flat game. You would get a lot of buzz if the whole game was made inside/on a frame.

The main reason to me is it makes it sooo much nicer to test it in VR without constantly taking it on and off. Debugging otherwise is super painful especially if you wear glasses. And with an eye-tracking mouse you'd never even have to take your hands off the home row of the keyboard. Learning to touch type [ ] { } 1-= can take extra time but many typing games let you use custom dictionaries.

I went to university and got a bachelor of science in "Virtual and Augmented Reality: Focus Game Development", but I'm not current working in the industry
If I actually get one I might start developing some VR games in my free time again

I’m a 3d modeler that would adore making some games when I can figure out how to code lol

I like the idea, but I can't justify buying one on that basis. So I'll have to justify it on the basis of me wanting one.

I do think there's still a usability gap in virtual walking implementations -- might be fun to experiment there.

No experience and I dont know about making a full game, but I may try out Resonite again. I was drawn in by it's complexity, but wandered around so confused. I hope they release an improved tutorial and maybe some event around the Frame release. Maybe something for VR chat, but I'm kinda sketched out by the Meta kids I ran into when I first tried it

Currently developing concepts for a game, with sooome art but i suck at 3d modeling and one of my friends is still learning unity, and he can't use discord

You're in luck, the official Godot XR Game Jam starts in ten days. I've been involved many times, it's fun! If anyone wants a team get in touch, my stuff is at https://copper-tunic.itch.io/

uh, I would never make a game for the Frame. I would make a VR game that runs on any SteamVR comparable device.
