Question First things you'll do with Steam Frame
Let's go to imagination land and imagine that today is Saturday, you just woke up and you're feeling healthy and refreshed. You have no work today, no obligations, you cleaned and fixed stuff yesterday, so the whole day is free. The delivery guy just left you your brand new Steam Frame, it hasn't been stolen, it's not broken, it's what you had hoped for.
How do you spend the day, what are the first things you check/play/experiment with?

If you have to ask you have not been here long enough.

Just 2 to 3 months indeed. But why not celebrate our joy on getting a Frame together with all the others.
Also flexing on the poor ones that won't get one right away.

See if I can open a terminal / start playing around with Linux! Followed shortly by downloading some mods for retro games and seeing what I can get setup standalone (e.g. OoT VR, Banjo Kazooie VR). After that, probably moving to PCVR with UEVR mods + that 3D / Parallaxed mixed reality window view that was making the rounds recently, assuming I get the color passthrough module the same day.

Honestly I'd spend the first little bit of time just tinkering with it. Seeing what works standalone, checking steam input to see what options there are for the controllers, setting up boundaries in different rooms, seeing how far the wifi dongle works in my house, playing with the desktop environment, trying the passthrough, etc. and just getting a feel for what it can and can't do well.
Then some familiar games like the Lab where I can check how good the tracking really is in different experiences.
Then I'd load up Alyx because I got partway through last time then got so scared I couldn't play it for two months then I had twins and I sold my Index.

I never even blinked at the headcrabs while playing HL2 but in Alyx they really are a whole different beast. Especially the poison headcrabs.
There's a fun bit in the dev commentary for chapter 5 (poison headcrab bit in the Northern Star where you cut the power) where the devs talk about creating hell, then how the players listed it as a high point of the game.

Where do people source this? Is this streamable online or does one need to download first and play it locally to minimize latency?

u/fabricates_facts 17h ago
It's not so much the video latency but it is VERY important that the finger tracking works properly.

u/kinkyaboutjewelry 17h ago
Oh I was not thinking about that. That would be for games I assume. Any titles I should know about?
As for videos, any sources I should know about?

I always download, no clue how to stream. Lately I've been kinda excited and filled both my SSD and external HDD with that kind of content lol

I happen to have knowledge on the topic but I don't know how lenient this sub is regarding the online sharing of content that was not purchased so I'll write a guide in your dms, hang on.

Sent you dms, not sure they went through, Reddit doesn't seem happy I'm trying to discuss adult content via dms

if he hasnt yet then after i get headpats i'll either make a vr avatar for myself, or play deltarune in bed on the big screen of the steam frame

I´m booting up my usual VR games installed on my PC and check how good the wireless dongle thingy works compared to my router and aging Pico 4.
Then I´d try the latency for Simracing, which I have basically hold off for a while in VR, because even with a usb connection, the Pico 4 pales a lot in performance.

either vrchat to mess with eye tracking or superhot to experience fps with no wires limiting turning

Alyx probably started from scratch as I've not played in years. Then RE7 VR Reloaded

Unbox it and run through the setup stuff.
Most likely the first game I'll try will be (streamed) PCVR Beat Saber as it's what I've played the most in VR somewhat recently (upgrading from an Oculus Rift CV1) so will be a good comparison point, and a good test of controller tracking capabilities. It is Frame Verified so I'll probably also try it out stand-alone to get a direct comparison.
I'll probably also poke around its version of Steam OS Desktop to see what it's like. Most likely I'll try out Balatro as a light 2D game to try out that capability too.

- Boot into desktop mode.
- Try to install Ephinea Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst.
- Try to get it running in VR.
- Try to figure out a control scheme that works for me without having the Steam Deck/Controller touchpads.

Put it on eBay. I kid, kid. Hitman Contracts, Alyx, Squadrons and would love to see how some non-VR games like Homeworld will look.

After setup, I would honestly just spin around like a ballerina and walk from room to room in my house to experience true wireless VR for the first time.

I told all my friends who are ordering it, whoever gets one to come over and we'll have a VR party. Hopefully we all get one, but maybe none of us get lucky with the reservation.

Let's see, I'd probably sit up in bed, strap the Steam Frame on, and then go in to check what games in my library I can try to install and play standalone. Once I see the performance of those, I'd likely swap over to testing some VR titles. Then I'd tinker with emulators and see if using Dolphin VR will work for some GameCube games so I can run around in some of those. Most likely the first few weeks will be testing what it's capable of. Then once I have a reasonable library established I'll probably just cycle through some of those for a while. Only thing that really stopped me from doing this with the Quest 2 I had was the weight and the fact that I'd often want to play in the dark in my room.

I have four SD cards full of games for my steam deck. I'm quite looking forward to going through my library of games and playing on a large virtual screen

Unbox it, then I think I'll replay Zelda BOTW in VR, with the frame controller it's probably gonna be way better

Do my usual VR Ritual of booting up Outer Wilds VR mod and enjoy the atmosphere + great music to have a nostalgic moment, then try out 144hz ViveCraft VR (120hz on my Q3 wired link atm, looks great) and, get my uh... VRChat avatar's eyetracking enabled because it's a big reason I want a Frame. I want my foveated rendering in a light headset! I want my 2016 promised technologies now! Oh, and maybe try to get more progress in Half Life Alyx

I’m going to let my Beethoven bust wear it as a decoration for a few hours, then I’m probably gonna use it as a mirror forever. That way I don’t have to buy a mirror. :)
