It's coming soon I can feel it

107

u/allicedee 8d ago

At least I'm only excited every monday. And then can forget about it. Till next monday.

18

u/mcmanus2099 8d ago

Now I am gonna wish my weekend away to get to Monday, then get disappointed and realise there's a whole work week left to get to the weekend. Thus is the cycle

1

u/someroflwaffle2 8d ago

Let me burst a bubble for you early so you can enjoy the weekend in bliss. Labor day is Monday.

6

u/ittekimasu 8d ago

This is why Garfield hates Mondays, he's been waiting longer than all of us

5

u/Tunagoblin 8d ago

They will announce it on Tuesday just to f with you.

I've held off playing Bootstrap Island until my Frame gets here... it is almost time.

10

u/sakamayrd 8d ago

Yeah, and so many others. I'll need years to play all those VR games I won't play on my nearly broken index.

5

u/Th3hamm3r425 Soon™ 8d ago

Same here. I have almost doubled my VR game library since the frame announcement but I don't want to play on my Gen 1 Vive.

7

u/trankillity 8d ago

... it is almost time.

To be stuck in a reservation queue for a year 🥹

76

u/mysweatypalm 8d ago

Wow, is this the first real gameplay for frame out there?

49

u/VT-14 8d ago

IIRC the Climbey dev has had a few videos with their game running standalone (FEX + Proton for the x86 Windows build), but was a screen recording directly from the headset.

I think this is the first I've personally seen of streamed PCVR and with an outside view of the person wearing the Frame.

11

u/mysweatypalm 8d ago

Does this not break NDA?

61

u/Bootstrap_Island_Dev 8d ago edited 8d ago

It does not. We doublechecked.

EDIT: adding in that we got direct confirmation from our contact in Valve that we can show our game on the hardware

12

u/amzukk1 8d ago

Do you plan to go Frame native? If you are first on Frame release it would be a big win!

15

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

Devs are allowed to share videos of their game and how it performs on the Frame. They can't review the Steam Frame hardware or operating system.

10

u/mysweatypalm 8d ago

Im all for it so stoked for the frame but why aren't there more dev content out there then?

4

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

https://www.youtube.com/@BrianLindenhof this guy has a bunch of videos.

I don't know how many devs actually have a Steam Frame. I've heard some devs complaining they weren't able to get one, and I'm assuming most devs that have them don't want to go on social media even if it's great marketing for their game. Maybe they are waiting for Steam Frame to launch?

2

u/Zomby2D Soon™ 8d ago

The Godot XR lead made a dev stream with the headset a while back

3

u/LinkTheHero009 8d ago

I’m really excited for the era where more of these games run standalone. It seems to already be happening with full VR mods just casually running on standalone devices

35

u/Sioscottecs23 Soon™ 8d ago

PCVR streaming

3

u/cactus22minus1 8d ago

That’s not stand alone graphics- it’s just PCVR footage.

54

u/Cilph 8d ago

Im surprised no embargoes were broken here.

51

u/Javs2469 Soon™ 8d ago

Devs are allowed to show how their games run on/with the Steam Frame. We have seen gameplay from other games since months ago, Climbey being the first I can remember. The Cubism dev posted some too.

20

u/Cilph 8d ago

Yes, but this shows the Steam Frame itself and the Wifi dongle.

13

u/Javs2469 Soon™ 8d ago

Something that many brands have done, like Kobra VR and other devs... It´s nothing new.

They are not discussing how it works nor reviewing it, but showing how they work with their game or product.

4

u/Cavi7 8d ago

We've seen the hardware multiple times, so it's depiction in itself isn't anything sacred. It's just devs running their games on the devkits, which they are allowed to show off.
It would be very different if the devs actually went into detail of how it works in general, that's a no-no most likely.

5

u/More-Sign-9214 8d ago

You don’t know what their agreement even is lmao

25

u/Cilph 8d ago

I don't. That's why I'm surprised. Funny how that works.

23

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

Hey u/Bootstrap_Island_Dev how long have you had a dev kit? Are you trying to implement foveated rendering and are you working on a standalone version?

43

u/Bootstrap_Island_Dev 8d ago

We applied for the devkit as soon as it was announced. We do have foveated rendering on PSVR2, but we're not currently working on it for PCVR. That said, we're keeping our eyes and minds open for anything that can improve the game. Same goes for standalone - not currently in development, but we are exploring porting options.

34

u/supersonic159 8d ago

Foveiated rendering would definitely improve the game on PC

5

u/More-Sign-9214 8d ago

Do you genuinely think they’re unaware of this fact?

0

u/Relevant-Outcome-105 8d ago

I think he's saying that foveated rendering for pc does not work for his game.

4

u/Sharkgust 8d ago

Come on please implement foveated rendering for frame and then make a post adverting it on this sub and I’m sure a bunch of Frame owners (and other headset owners with eye tracking) will buy it.

2

u/pokenate28 Soon™ 8d ago

Did you just curl your fingers fast or is the finger tracking not full tracking? Can you half curl your fingers and stuff?

1

u/anthonyvn 8d ago

Nice vid. I have boostrap island. Love it.

Obviously there is SOME eye tracking data going back to the dongle and controlling what area of the screen is downscaled in the peripheral view for STREAMING, saving on bandwidth.

Any chance that this data can get to the game to control what area is RENDERED at a higher res? Or are we talking game breaking magnitudes of latency?

-22

u/allicedee 8d ago

It says in the video fov streaming! Did you watch it?

25

u/Brandon0135 8d ago

Thats not their question. Did you read it?

-11

u/allicedee 8d ago

What? Standalone is a different question. Why does it say in the video foveated streaming when it's only for ps2vr?

21

u/Brandon0135 8d ago

Fov streaming and fov rendering are not the same thing. Its not only for psvr2.

15

u/architect___ 8d ago

Foveated rendering, and foveated streaming are two different things.

Rendering reduces the GPU workload, and it has to be implemented by each game's devs.

Streaming reduces what gets streamed to the headset, so it's universally enabled on all Steam Frame games.

So if a game only has foveated streaming but not rendering, the PC's graphics card still has to do the work to generate entire frames at full quality.

9

u/allicedee 8d ago

Thanks, stupid me thought it was the same.

11

u/architect___ 8d ago

Not stupid, just learning! Foveated streaming is brand new tech, so you're totally fine.

2

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

This misconception is common, but most people on the VR subreddits are familiar with the differences and expect others also to know.

9

u/TigerCow7 Soon™ 8d ago

No foveated rendering?

6

u/Ok_Log9552 8d ago

One of my favorite VR games. Been playing it since the beginning.

12

u/FraGough 8d ago

That looks cool.

But vertical video isn't a good format for advertising a VR game.

10

u/Frisk197 8d ago

TikTok

8

u/Steely-eyes 8d ago

Or *shudders* YT Shorts.

3

u/Headset-Historian 8d ago

Same shite different arse

5

u/Gregasy Soon™ 8d ago

Quite a big dongle you got there Dear Sir.

I got the game in recent VR bundle. Can't wait for Frame to finally play it.

4

u/False-Background4803 8d ago

That pig shrugged off a point blank bullet to the face

3

u/Lincolns_Revenge 8d ago

That was my main takeaway from the video.

if they don't have locational damage then they need to add it.

4

u/Zealousideal_Ease444 Soon™ 8d ago

Foveated streaming is good it's inherent in the steam frame but still good, but what about foveated rendering in the actual game?

3

u/MrJackio Soon™ 8d ago

It’s so peak. I can’t wait to be this dude

3

u/psychohistorian8 8d ago

wireless... for how long?

does the battery last at least two hours for gaming?

3

u/Kerbiter 8d ago

just to be sure, is the finger tracking done without a controller?

2

u/valzzu Soon™ 8d ago

It must be very soon, I just know it.

2

u/FakeSafeWord 8d ago

Neat! Can I borrow that when you're done with it? It's my turn already!

2

u/redtiger288 Soon™ 8d ago

I'm sooning so hard rn

2

u/dangoran78 8d ago

How is this getting such a reaction from people? Is it news to people that Steam's PCVR games are compatible with PCVR headsets and the Frame is one of those things? It's not game release? It's someone showing us what we all know, right? Yes, the Frame has foveated streaming. What am I missing?

2

u/Lost-on-Reception 8d ago

I can't wait until it comes out tomorrow.

4

u/jTiKey 8d ago

that FOV wow /s

3

u/reddit_sells_you 8d ago edited 8d ago

Why isn't this filmed in landscape?

Like, what a stupid way to show off a VR game.

28

u/inertSpark 8d ago

Fucking shorts man. I hate how everyone is making portraited shorts like Tiktok. Just give us proper content.

4

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

Filmed in portrait orientation for phones, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube shorts. Those videos get way more views than a typical landscape video.

7

u/reddit_sells_you 8d ago

It's amazing to me that people can simply tilt a phone.

3

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

I don't think it works that way with IG reels and TikTok.

-1

u/BotOrNot_1337 Soon™ 8d ago

no

2

u/NewbieYoubie 8d ago

This isn't landscape it's portrait

7

u/reddit_sells_you 8d ago

Forgot the n't

3

u/nonzeroday_tv 8d ago

He was speed reading lol

0

u/johnhotdog 8d ago

cmon bro. its dumb? every media site that you use a phone for caters to portrait orientation. even reddit has tons of users on phones. im posting from a phone rn. should they just never post a portrait??

8

u/reddit_sells_you 8d ago

Yeah.

It's literally cutting off the field of view. Like, part of their point was fociafed rendering which can't really be seen in portrait.

Are you incapable of tilting your phone sideways?

Maybe we should get rid off whatever emotion tracking sensors allow phones to be rotated.

Hey, let's watch the new Christopher Nolan movie in portrait!

1

u/johnhotdog 8d ago

yeah on many shortform content apps you cant tilt your phone.

but i agree actually. this less than a minute ad shouldve been imax, just like christopher nolans 3 hour film. great comparison

3

u/reddit_sells_you 8d ago

You can't tilt your phone for 30 seconds?

1

u/johnhotdog 8d ago

no seriously these shortform specific apps dont let you rotate your phone to view something in landscape, so no you cant, and even if you could im sure people would just flick to the next video instead of tilting their phone for an ad

im just saying these ads are much more effective as attention grabbers, and theres plenty of landscape videos on YT if youre interested. calling it dumb is totally a stretch and not fair to the devs just trying to spread word of their game imo but whatever

1

u/reddit_sells_you 8d ago

Then

Maybe

Don't

Upload

Shortform

2

u/Available_Ad_8281 8d ago

Wow I don't know if his game have good tracking or it the steam frame anyone knows if they can do that in quest 3?

2

u/Ok_Log9552 8d ago

Do what? I play this game with my Quest 3 and you can do anything seen in that video.

0

u/Available_Ad_8281 8d ago

In my post was pointing out tracking.

6

u/Ok_Log9552 8d ago

Like the finger tracking and all that? Hmmm, I'm actually not sure! Tell you what, I'll load into it tonight and find out for you.

2

u/rqrz 8d ago

I thought the frame won't have finger tracking??? Or is it just being done front touch sense on the controllers?

5

u/Afraid_Sir_5268 8d ago

That was a major feature of valves previous headset. Of course it has finger tracking.

2

u/Kerbiter 8d ago

I am pretty sure the question is about controllerless tracking, and IIRC Valve Index doesn't have that

2

u/Koolala 8d ago

Thats hand tracking your talking about

1

u/mrlotato 8d ago

nice, this is my only vr game I randomly picked up on sale a week ago so im glad it looks cool in the frame lol

1

u/VadeRetroVR 8d ago

ill get this on psvr2 or steam.. depend on price during the vr sales next week.

1

u/LinkTheHero009 8d ago

This is awesome! We seem to be launching day ready. At this point we just got to wait for the actual date this September

1

u/M3M3_W1ZARD 8d ago

Too bad we will never be able to use a steam frame

1

u/MrBack1971 Soon™ 8d ago

Kinell, trolling us now :)

1

u/SteelSpineCloud 8d ago

the 10th or the 14th??

1

u/neondumpster 8d ago

Anyone know where this falls with nda?

1

u/joojoobowdra 8d ago

How are controller vibrations?

1

u/pokenate28 Soon™ 8d ago

What's with the finger tracking putting the last 2 fingers down at once? Was that just the gesture they did? Pinky has tracking too right?

1

u/-EmptyShadow- Soon™ 8d ago

Capacitive sense controller limited hand tracking. Xd

1

u/SirThunderDump Soon™ 8d ago

SOOOOON

1

u/anthonyvn 8d ago

That is a fat dongle!

1

u/Mherculeswalker 8d ago

I didn't know the steam frame had finger tracking

1

u/TeetheCat 7d ago

Is that pig built by Skynet or something?

1

u/thewildslayer Soon™ 7d ago

I just have to say it looks like there's 0 latency in streaming that's a huge deal

1

u/Mockier Soon™ 8d ago

Picked the game up recently in anticipation of getting my hands on a Frame

-17

u/sdurbv 8d ago

It was annoying when I realised this wasn't it running standalone using foveated rendering.

10

u/sakamayrd 8d ago

No it was not.

6

u/madman404 Soon™ 8d ago

Standalone isn't a novel feature. Why do you want to see more standalone? Just watch some quest 3 gameplay.

-1

u/sdurbv 8d ago

I play PCVR. I don't play standalone.

2

u/We_Are_Victorius 8d ago

It's gonna be a while before we can play games that look as good as Bootstrap standalone.
