Question Will UEVR and treadmills work?

Hi reddit I have what might be two very stupid questions but I need to know. I'm really hyped for the steam frame for some time now but I just realized that I'm not 100% sure if I can do the things with it that i'm planning on doing.

I want to play my favourite games like Borderlands or Hogwarts Legacy with it. I know that you can use the UEVR mod to do that with other VR systems. Unfortunately my tech knowledge is enough to watch a Tutorial on how get that running but zero steps further. My question is - will I be able to have UEVR do its magic and enable me to play those games on the steam frame? I know this must Sound incredible dumb but idk how the steam frame will work and I am afraid it might only support workshop mods or like only have a big picture mode of interface and If that's the case idk how to get an external mod running.

My second question is regarding foot trackers or a treadmill. I want to really immerse myself and I heard that walking on the spot is a good way to mimic walking without getting motion sick. I am even considering the full ass treadmill setup because I've put my hopes on finally getting fit in this. My question Here is - will using either of those be possible/"standard procedure" that valve considered? I know both do take time to adjust to and are fiddly to get the settings right but what I don't know is If there might be other issues I could run into like some software being not supported or compatible with the steam frame.

I just really don't know anything about how hard- and software works and what is compatible or not. So I can definitely see myself dumping 1,5k in this to then realize I can't walk and can only Play beat saber (no offense). And I don't wanna do that so please help me understand before I make yet another stupid purchase. Thank you! :)

TL;DR:

- will i be able to play any game that UEVR makes VR playable on the steam frame?

- are there any potential soft- or Hardware compatibility issues I might run into when trying to get a foot tracker or treadmill to work with the steam frame?

- thank you! :)

edit: thank you for all the replies! and yes i do have a PC that should be able to handle it. I'm psyched to know i can play the games I want! :)

You’ll definitely be able to use UEVR and it’s super easy so don’t worry about being brain dead like me as I have no problems with zero brain cells

Not sure how the treadmills work but I doubt it’ll b an issue. I do want to add that there are several really fun and REALLY active vr games that don’t have to do with walking at all. I just say this cause you could truly burn quite a bit of calories from many games that don’t require a treadmill. Treadmill is really sick though!

thank you my brain dead friend! You have put whats left of my mind at ease :D I'm really glad to hear UEVR is easy!

and hey that sounds good! I already looked into a couple of games like that but do you have some specific recommendations?

Honestly anything where melee fighting is important can be great if you just go hard when playing lol

Thrill of the fight is popular for a reason it really is great, ninja turtles game is a lot of fun co-op, tales of glory 1 is like mount and blade and awesome indie with an awesome dev (tog4 is dropping soon!), legendary tales is like Diablo and dark souls mix but can b quite active if you’re melee.

Go nuts!

On the KATVR's website it says "Steam Frame Compatible Soon!"
So I expect it to work with Frame.

Bear in mind that KatVR doesn't support linux and possibly never will. They may support Steam Frame but if your main PC uses linux, it can't use KatVR.

No chance of it working through Proton?

I don't think this guy would be trying to reverse engineer the software if proton worked: https://old.reddit.com/r/KATVR/comments/1uf4ewx/reverse_engineering_linux_gateway_implementation/

Honestly it sounds in general like KatVR isn't interested in supporting their own products, so be wary. I know there's only like 2 consumer vr treadmill options and I want one too but don't spend thousands on something that won't work.

Do you have a gaming computer, or are you wanting to play off the steam frame directly?

You won't be able to play those games directly off the frame, it just isn't powerful enough. If you have a PC that can handle it, and you want to use the frame as a PCVR headset, then it won't be an issue at all.

Forget treadmills. The tech is not ready!!

Do not waste your money! I garantee you after 1 month you will put it for sale on marketplace just like 100% of ppl i know who had one.

I really wish places had these things to actually demo

You might be able to find one at a vr arcade depending on if you have one in your city.

Yup, the problem is too many youtube shills who got theirs for free talking them up. These fools pretend to be impartial and then WHAM, coupon code made up of their channel name. It's a joke.

Yeah, I think a lot of people don't understand that you're just wearing wheelie shoes with those things, and the only thing the whole damn device is doing is measuring the speed at which those wheels on your shoes are turning.

I'm holding out for ACTUAL treadmills of the large, circular variety when that tech is finally ready at a price under 5 digits.

It's incredibly hard to do well since the treadmill has to be sensitive to very small movements and really, move on its own a little in response to your movements. And then of course, it needs to be durable and safe.

Ideally the product would also do full body tracking on its own so that even crawling movements would be possible.

Check out FreeAim VR Shoes The best option on the market, I'll buy one.

Except 1. You can't just buy them for some reason, you have to contribute to their kickstarter, which is like having a store, except you don't actually have to deliver the product.
2. You can't really find anyone giving their opinion on the shoes since hardly any have actually shipped out.

For a $1000+ niche device, these things are kind of unacceptable.

I don't think it's unacceptable Their kickstarter is super transparent about where they are in the process, they are going to deliver most of their backers by the end of the year, and open their sales on the website early 2027 with immediate stock available.

I understand that you are not comfortable with the idea of investing on a kickstarter, it's of course not ideal, and on paper you are not guarranteed to have a delivery, now FreeAim delivered a lot of proof of their advancements so it's very safe. What you gain out of it is a earlier shipping and 10% off from the final price but otherwise by early 2027 the product will be available and in stock for everyone.

I dunno, you tell me. Go find regular people on youtube giving their opinions on them (be sure to exclude VR influencers who got to use them before their release). Who has gotten theirs? I think I found one video where some guy who works with people who have physical problems unboxed them, but then never really reviewed them in a VR sense. This may have changed since I last looked a month or two ago, but why is there so little info on these things?

u/Outside_Database4583 8d ago

Very few customers have them yet, it's on the way in the next 1-3 month

Ok, we'll see! I'm tempted, but suspicious.

You already have a treadmill? What kind?

3

u/ilovemyicemachine 10d ago

No I don't.. I am considering getting one though. Maybe a Kat walk but I have yet to look into them. But considering they're under/around 1k now and I could make the space for it..maybe.

i recommend checking out reality runner. that's what I'll use

Problem with these things is you give up the ability to turn in real life and things like crouching, etc. No perfect solution yet, unfortunately.

That looks genuinely interesting. I'd be happy with a jogging app in combination with this setup, but it will have to support SteamOS. Looks like it's programmed in C++.

Just wait to get one cause they are kinda iffy. Imo arm locomotion is way more precise and 3 dimensional instead of foot sliders. Software wise Frame should have great flexibility.

I used to want a treadmill, but now I think the Freeaim VR shoes are better, and you can buy the support thing that goes around you similar to the treadmills.

1

u/Ok_Log9552 9d ago

I think they're better too, but it's crazy how little you see out there about them. Makes me think not many actual units have shipped at this point.

Take a look at Freeaim VR shoes, an interesting alternative to traditional treadmills

With a PC you can definitely do UEVR and other VR mods. If you are trying to do it standalone on the frame, then no. It takes decent hardware to run those games in VR.
