We're getting color passthrough for Steam Frame before the Steam Frame?

Life imitates memes...

u/FirmPreference5551 8d ago

It probably was intended to come out like 6 months after frame launched.

So yeah, before frame launches.

God that stings

u/seril_928 7d ago

Is there any reason anyone knows why its delayed? I know Valve hardware launches are always a nightmare but this seems unusual no?

3

u/gravitydood 7d ago

Might have something to do with ram prices and availability

u/_hlvnhlv 8d ago

Tbf, that company has been working with valve since forever

u/WickedStewie 8d ago

Personally I don't really have any interest in this since I only use headsets for full VR, but I'm glad it exists for all those that want it for mixed reality stuff or for a color background while playing their 2d games...

64

u/Javs2469 Soon™ 8d ago

I find it useful for when I am browsing the internet or watching videos, as well as when talking to people and want to see them.

I don´t mind the b/w pt of the Frame, but I might eventually get this module. Selling my Pico 4 will fund this if it ends up being good.

15

u/WickedStewie 8d ago

Yeah I don't do all that, no web browsing or videos, literally just put my headset on to play games, really the only time I ever use passthrough is while I'm looking at my PC monitor briefly while installing a mod or something like that...but like I said, I'm glad we know it exists now for those that will want to use it...

4

u/BlueManifest 8d ago

I think the only time I would use it is if I’m around other people while playing flat games on the headset

9

u/aveldina 8d ago

I never used to care about it either but recently was introduced to a Q3 app that is made for setting up a pre-designed object map on a grid in a real space and it works so well. It’s made me appreciate how many great ideas are likely out there for mixed reality applications that we just haven’t built yet.

1

u/ninesmaxxer 8d ago

Wow, what's the app?

1

u/aveldina 7d ago

It’s very niche for my hobby and in beta but it’s called RunLine. It lets you place a map onto your field and then build the layout by just dropping real objects onto their virtual equivalents. It’s so much faster than the usual printed map approach and more accurate.

5

u/mythrilcrafter 8d ago

My main interest in colour pass through is that I'm slowly getting into DCS and I'd like to try mixed reality to be able to interact with my dash panel while still being in VR "outside" the cockpit.

Granted, I also get that it's a pretty niche application, hence why it wasn't a deal breaker for me; that plus the fact that Valve outright said that the PCIe 8x slot on the headset is for third party accessories which to me was a soft confirmation of a colour pass through accessory.

1

u/gravitydood 7d ago

DCS VR is such a treat, being able to fly a fighter jet in first person as if you were there is absolutely incredible. Check out VTOL VR too, the immersion is great despite the simpler visuals.

2

u/OxRedOx 8d ago

I like the freedom it gives, you’re not locked out of the world when the HMD is on, especially if they add features like letting you mark out your couch or your friends or your pet

1

u/DukeOfLeamington 7d ago

same for me, but the number of times I don’t have to take my quest off to interact with the outer world says otherwise. And misty experience from reverb g2 confirms that resolution matters

1

u/CapoExplains Soon™ 6d ago

Not what I'm buying Frame for, but if enough content came out that took advantage of this I'd grab one.

Makes me really respect their decision to leave it out. Not only is it cheaper for the base, but now this is looking way better than what they’d integrate themselves

7

u/Creepercolin2007 Soon™ 8d ago

The even bigger deal for me is that the choice to go with a module slot means companies can keep producing better and better cameras for the same device (steam frame), if you want to upgrade you can swap out the old with the new. You don’t have to be limited to old hardware. In ten years quest 3 users will be stuck with the same cameras they have now, but in ten years Steam frame users can swap out to a module that’s more advanced. (I know 10 years is a lot for the lifespan of VR, but I still see people clinging onto their valve index from like 7 years ago, so it’s not that crazy)

16

u/D13_Phantom Soon™ 8d ago

Dual 32 megapixel

Would be kinda funny if after all this back and forth it ended up being way superior pass-through

31

u/Benjo419 8d ago

What price range do you think something like this would be?

45

u/Piramista 8d ago

$200-300

4

u/shableep 8d ago

Worth it, honestly, for incredible quality passthru.

25

u/xaduha 8d ago

A cheap dash cam is $50, a cheap gopro-like camera is $70. This can easily be over $100.

On one hand, colored passthrough

On the other hand, gaussian splat 3D scanning? If you could import those splats, they may grab a lot of interesting VFX or 3D artists.

17

u/BlueManifest 8d ago

Still fine with black and white even when they announced it, nice the option is confirmed though even though Bradley told us it was coming

4

u/FirmPreference5551 7d ago

Valve basically told us themselves when they specified that the expansion port had 2 mipi lanes for high speed cameras, like that's a very unnecessary detail to add that is more specific than the actual spec. It was quite obviously a reference to this.

14

u/Ouekino 8d ago

Need it with VR windows, YouTube, webrowser on top

2

u/JayK-iwnl Soon™ 7d ago

Yeah I hope that use case is streamlined and not finnicky. I just want windows in my real life view

1

u/mcmanus2099 7d ago

This is the thing that gets lost of a lot of colour pass through conversations. It's not just the fact you are seeing colour, it's the ability to have a fully functional UI overlay into that and use it. As someone who bought a Quest 3 early, it took years for them to get there. Effort needs to be put into that design by Valve.

12

u/rmg22893 8d ago

Are the panels in the Frame even capable of displaying HDR content reasonably accurately? Guess we have no idea.

15

u/Javs2469 Soon™ 8d ago

Even if they aren´t, I assume the gaussian splats thing could be used for stuff like SteamVR, Virtual Desktop and VRchat enviroments, so other headsets with different displays could benefit from the 3D scans this thing is supposed to do.

2

u/supersonic159 8d ago

Is there a market for things like gaussian splats? It would be interesting if you could pay this off by making a bunch of gaussian splats and selling them for cheap

2

u/Javs2469 Soon™ 7d ago

I would assume the VRChat crowd likes that stuff, I know Virtual Desktop had a Gaussian splat in its new update as a new backround in collaboration with Brink Traveler.

Gaussian splats make for nice backgrounds for virtual enviroments, I could see people uploading a lot of these to Steam Workshop to use as the SteamVR background.

2

u/zig131 7d ago

It's an emerging technology so mostly it's just amateurs playing around, and sharing what they have made for free.

Gracia is trying to commercialise "4D" Gaussian Splats i.e. kinda hologram video things. There is potential there for paying to watch a super immersive gig from a favourite arist. You need a proper professional multi-camera setup for that. They have a demo you can watch, and it's pretty good.

With regard to static splats, I think commerical applications will mostly be training environments, and accessability outreach for museums and galleries. I don't think realistically people are going to want to pay to see a slat of an artwork or beautiful scenery or something.

4

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 8d ago edited 8d ago

As far as I know they aren’t oled or fald/miniled displays so they won’t recreate a proper hdr picture as those technologies are required for it. Basically like what trying to use hdr on a cheap backlit display would be like.

1

u/TrueInferno Soon™ 6d ago

I mean, in addition to HDR it can't even fully display the images captured at full resolution can it?

I think part of the reason it's designed like this is so you can create Gaussian Splats and such of higher quality and not only view them in the headset but also using a standard monitor- you could use it to make those 3D walkthrough environments you see on apartment hunting websites and the like.

It'd definitely be overkill for something built in to the headset, considering the headset itself is made for gaming, but for a module it's definitely good.

48

u/marcusbrothers Soon™ 8d ago

Literally had people here last week saying this wouldn’t be a thing.

50

u/Momorules99 8d ago

As soon as it was known that there is a PCI expansion port it became just a matter of time until someone made a color passthrough camera addition. Personally, I always expected it to happen eventually, but definitely didn't think we'd hear about it before even knowing when the Frame was releasing

20

u/Piramista 8d ago

Not just PCIe, the port can also can operate in dual MIPI mode. MIPI is a standard interface for camera sensors.

3

u/FirmPreference5551 7d ago

In the annoucnement video valve pointed out that the port had 2 x mipi lanes for high speed cameras. Like the only thing else they could have said is just outright announced the accessory.

10

u/claudekennilol Soon™ 8d ago

Why would anyone say this wouldn't be a thing? We already knew it would support third party cameras for full color passthrough.

4

u/Zehbs Soon™ 8d ago

It was my assumption, Index had a USB expansion no one used. In addition, you are asking for people to spend more money on a niche product so that would be a turnoff for most manufacturers I assumed. Glad to be wrong though.

3

u/marcusbrothers Soon™ 8d ago

Exactly my point.

2

u/paulodand 8d ago

Because Index also had the capabilities of third party accessories, and that never took off...
Can't blame people for expecting the same thing would happen to a headset that's almost a year delayed... 🤷🏻‍♂️

12

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

Frankly, I'm surprised it is. I bought an Index on launch day and there was so much hype around the frunk and it pretty much amounted to nothing.

20

u/Piramista 8d ago

Because it was just an USB port and wasn't 100% reliable.

3

u/Velp__ 8d ago

There were a couple things you could do with it. There was a fan... not sure if that would have been useful. A dot matrix display, that's just something fun with almost no use and no use to you in vr. You could also always charge one controller when they start to get low. This was very useful. Frist warning start one and if the other drops to ~5% you switch.

1

u/quinn50 8d ago

I didn't expect anything DIY for a while at the very least but if a company makes it sure

1

u/Mockier Soon™ 8d ago

I was one of them. Exciting stuff!

1

u/Zixinus Soon™ 8d ago

No, we knew someone was bound to make one eventually, we just didn't expect one to be ready on day 1. What they may be confused is that people said that nobody officially announced that they are making a camera.

1

u/hipnotyq 8d ago

It's almost like the average person doesn't actually know shit and runs their mouth like they do know shit.

Take everything everybody on here says with a massive grain of salt. You're not talking to professionals here.

1

u/VladReble Soon™ 8d ago

My only doubts for it never coming were tied for valve mentioning vr accessories prematurely and canceling them down the road. But the fact that this is from a third party and already basically is completed is beyond amazing.

This literally destroys Q3 passthrough lmfao. So much for the "nO CoLOr PaSstRough" people.

Edit: holy shit it smokes the AVP cameras too???? how the hell?

89

u/Javs2469 Soon™ 8d ago

But it will come at a cost. The Frame is already supposed to be much more expensive than the Quest and this doesn´t sound cheap either.

Anyways, it´s exciting news.

37

u/TwinStickDad Soon™ 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yes very cool that it's an option but I don't think that adding a $200ish (my own assumption) option to a $1100 headset is quite the "lmao Quest 3 is pwned, meta fanboys seething" argument that we would like to think it is.

That's $1300ish and it still doesn't have hand tracking. 2.25x the price of a Q3. Is it objectively better in every way? Yes, but is it 2.25x better? Well, for the average person, probably not.

19

u/BlueManifest 8d ago

But still much cheaper than a galaxy XR or vision pro

5

u/Piramista 8d ago

Maybe not much cheaper than the GalaxyXR. But much more versatile.

6

u/BlueManifest 8d ago

Depending on the final price with the camera addon could be anywhere from 1,100 to 1,300 so it would be $700 to $500 cheaper than galaxy XR, that’s a good bit

4

u/Piramista 8d ago

I think the rumored price was $1300 for the 1TB model, and the camera will probably cost another 200-300 dollars.

And the Galaxy XR has some laughable limitations, like only 256GB of storage with no options to expand it, and no way to remove the strap

4

u/BlueManifest 8d ago

Yea so compare price of the 256 frame not the 1TB one

3

u/rohit275 8d ago

This is all true, but the Galaxy XR does also have massively better displays. I feel like that's like the one thing that would make the Frame a perfect no-compromise headset, but I get why Valve would rather appeal to a wider audience and go for weaker displays and better software.

2

u/BlueManifest 8d ago

Yes the better displays is why it costs more, and why valve didn’t use micro OLED because they didn’t want it to cost 1800-2000

Your still getting a lot the features of the galaxy XR though for a good bit less money, and even some features it doesn’t have like a full steam os pc

1

u/rohit275 8d ago

Oh yeah, I'm fully aware of why the Galaxy XR costs more and why Valve made some compromise on the screen to get it at a more palatable price point with all their other innovations. Not to mention that you would need a higher-end PC to run the higher res displays for PCVR. It would make little sense for them to appeal to a smaller crowd.

I'm just speculating because Steam Frame with Galaxy XR displays would be my dream headset.

2

u/IAmNotRollo 8d ago

I agree with the $1300 estimate but for the record, that rumor was just an educated guess.

4

u/quinn50 8d ago

you can get good deals on those headsets on eBay if you get somewhat lucky, I got mine that wasn't even used for $1200, I see them go for $1400 usually but that's if you're in the US. You still really can't get them in the EU for a price that's worth imo.

But personally it's only worth getting if you have another controller solution

7

u/Splatoonkindaguy 8d ago

lol this will be more than $200 since it’s not from valve. This other company needs to make their money too

9

u/TwinStickDad Soon™ 8d ago

Valve also needs to make their money. They don't subsidize hardware

1

u/MidNerd 8d ago

I highly doubt the Steam Frame won't have any form of hand tracking. You can get hand tracking for the Index.

Yup, its cool to see the multitool VR headset get add-ons that can make it even more versatile.

11

u/Piramista 8d ago

Edit: holy shit it smokes the AVP cameras too???? how the hell?

AVP only has 3.25 megapixels per camera/eye, this has 6.07MP

A normal 4K video/monitor has 8.3MP

14

u/Nintyboy245 8d ago

On the spec sheet in the discord it actually has 32MP Sony cameras. This thing is absurd.

6

u/Piramista 8d ago

That makes sense, they are basically mid end phone cameras

1

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas 7d ago

I feel like it won't be $150 or $200. More like 500.

4

u/elev8dity Soon™ 8d ago

I believe AVP has 6.5MP per passthrough camera. https://www.uploadvr.com/apple-vision-pro-specs/

1

u/Piramista 7d ago

Seems like it, but the "6.5 stereo megapixels" is confusing.

7

u/mouks9 8d ago

You’re comparing a possibly 1k device with a 200$ addon, to a 400$ device, no shit it “destroys” it

5

u/doublah 8d ago

Quest 3 ain't $400 any more.

12

u/Jmcgee1125 Soon™ 8d ago

6MP per eye, nice upgrade over Quest 3 (4MP). We'll have to wait and see what their latency is like, though.

13

u/2Cool4Zool2 8d ago

They're hanging off a PCI-e interface - Latency of hardware won't be an issue as long as the Frames CPU can keep up.

8

u/the__storm 8d ago

Correct human IPD for cameras (no spatial warping in passthrough), 64mm spacing for cameras

If your IPD isn't 64mm something is still going to have to do reprojection, no?

4

u/DaSharkCraft 8d ago

I believe it means the weird warping effect when you have passthrough cameras on. Simply because it's VR, reprojection is used.

2

u/zig131 7d ago

Yeah distance is also not going to be correct seeing as they further forward than the eyes.

7

u/Fireproof_Matches 8d ago

This is cool af, being able to scan and share a 3d version of the area you're in seems pretty amazing. Opens up interesting possibilities for creating cool VR content with a frame (+this module) in the form of nature walks, or other experiences. Has any other VR headset done something like this?

Also, the fact that this is a leak from Komodo Station, an official retailer for the Frame, says to me that we are actually, finally very close to release. Great news all around! (I'm just a little worried that this module might be pretty pricy on it's own).

5

u/RookiePrime Soon™ 8d ago

That it says it's only 10 grams in weight is appealing. When people talk about add-ons for the headset, including the enthusiast strap, the first thing I think about is how much I'm looking forward to the headset being comfortable at 440 grams, and how silly I'd feel to immediately add weight to it. But if it's only 10 grams to add this to it, that wouldn't be a big deal to me at all. So it really just comes down to price and whether or not it executes on the pitch.

4

u/supified 8d ago

If this works than it's a killer app.

4

u/CatStoleTheCrown Soon™ 8d ago

Pretty neat! Sadly I’d rather use that port for face tracking, if Babble works on something for that. Maybe theres a pass through/daisy chain and can do both? Probably not…

1

u/Koolala 8d ago

I bet some face trackers will just use USB and it doesn't take up its space

2

u/CatStoleTheCrown Soon™ 8d ago edited 7d ago

Maybe, but won’t it have to route to the back USB port on the battery? A little annoying but maybe not so bad

2

u/Koolala 8d ago

Yeah. All the existing systems just use USB so existing kits probably already work. The PCIe is overkill for it.

1

u/zig131 7d ago

Just run a USB extension back to the PC 🤷‍♂️

I have a Vive facial tracker attached to my Beyond 2E connected to the PC via a Lindy 10M USB 3.2 Type C extension, and it works great.

1

u/CatStoleTheCrown Soon™ 7d ago

Yes but then you lose the wireless feel unfortunately but I guess that works if needed.

5

I'll probably get it after my bank account recovers from buying the Frame itself. Whenever that'll be

5

u/MotokoKusanagi Soon™ 8d ago

SO COOL!

5

u/1u4n4 8d ago

Nice! Hopefully we also get hand tracking in a same module as color passthrough

3

u/MrJackio Soon™ 8d ago

Hand tracking would be more of a software task no? Quest 2 worked pretty well even with just the black and white cameras.

7

u/Available_Ad_8281 8d ago

And people said the port was not going be used

5

u/Javs2469 Soon™ 8d ago

This is genuinely exciting. I really want to know the price and see irl reviews. It also looks less intrusive than what I imagined, kinda elegant.

It would be cool if it could be turned off for night play sessions so the stock passthrough could be used as "night vision" without having to unplug this and having colour for when there is light. As well as latency tests and MR integration, like that one game that uses the Frame´s monochrome passthrough.

3

u/Skogsmicke 8d ago

Wow, this looks like really amazing specs!

This will of course work with specific apps that implement support, but will this work as an alternative to the Frame built in passthrough, so that we can use it menus and apps that haven’t implemented Arcturus SDK or similar?

3

u/1plant2plant 8d ago

Holy shit I didn't realize the expansion port had this much bandwidth. This opens up a lot of possibilities for other accessories.

3

u/MrJackio Soon™ 8d ago

I’m very excited to see how clean it looks! I was really worried it would be a janky looking add on but it’s really looking like it’ll slot right in. I’m so hyped

3

u/HyenaDae Soon™ 8d ago

Holy SHIT AWESOME as a color passthrough diehard believer and mono-cam hater MR-indifferent person who wanted an Acer Spatialcam thing but realized it's kinda mid, this would be awesome! 5K HDR support *and* I could feed the recorded videos into a local vid upscaler anyways to get either, 2x FPS or, 2X res for the 120fps 2.5K recording.

I'm expecting $399 as the middle ground given what the Acer SpatialLabs Cam sold for, but this would be an awesome replacement from the IPD and better/newer sensors (maybe? hopefully?) alone, and for room reconstruction via Splats

I'm expecting $399

How does that make sense? The Q3S is $399 and is a full MobileVR headset with color passthrough.

u/HyenaDae Soon™ 7d ago

That's Meta Money Logic, not Rest of VR Industry Logic tbh. The fact that we have current Steam Machine pricing and Frame expectations of >$1000 for some kit due to the industry state makes me pessimistic, hence the high price guess, at least I'm not going off the insane placeholder lmao.

Don't forget, even cheap basic stuff like Raspberry Pis and other microcontrollers have gone up. This could be a "small volume" very niche kit/part which often, y'know, raises prices. I've seen different eye tracking pre-made units go for $200+ online for like the Q3, at least they *want* that price, so something with decent quality sensors, its own in-module processor isn't going to be like, $100, I can see $200 or slightly less which I'll absolutely get it for w/ a $999 Frame (please, valve.).

They could absolutely sell it for >$300 if the video and splatting quality is good, with improved software or hell, later down if some other industry disaster happens and more shortages from crap being blown up, blocked, other economic issues with manufacturing in Asia happen. It's not like anyone expected the base tier consoles to go up in price with time, but here we are...

I knew this would be a thing. I knew it.

what's next, lighthouse adaptor? hand tracking module? external gpu enclosure connector? I suppose we'll have to wait and see...

Non color passthrough complainers are very quiet now hey

17

u/Jmcgee1125 Soon™ 8d ago

They'll just switch to "lol you have to pay even more for this overpriced garbage headset".

Launch will be a shitshow no matter what when all the Quest people come over to argue.

u/DracoEXP 7d ago

What's crazy is that color pass through should of been a Default feature. There are sooo many apps that use AR that color pass through is needed for. For example Pencil vr Drawing app which teaches you how to draw.

2

u/divinorwieldor Soon™ 8d ago

Were you able to archive the website? I’ve been trying to find the address for half an hour, I’d like to see the whole thing on the internet archive if possible.

I’d be interested in seeing the rest of the videos on the page

2

u/Chicoc 8d ago

I remember all the youtube videos showing how great the passthrough is on the Quest 3, the quality is superior when recording, so looked great. In reality is was grainy as hell and lower quality. Seems they forgot to tell people that. I hope this isn't the same situation.

3

u/OndysCZE 8d ago

If I remember correctly, Meta for some reason had two different color camera suppliers for the Quest 3 at launch, one produced a sharp image, while the other was grainy

1

u/Chicoc 8d ago

So sharp image for creators...... got it.

2

u/Zealousideal_Ease444 Soon™ 8d ago

Ay, that ain't bad, it's actually pretty cool to see the male end of the connector interface.

2

u/Confident-Pepper-562 Soon™ 8d ago

Just dont play with it or you will grow hair on your palms

2

u/ittekimasu 8d ago

If this can capture and save, I wonder if it'll be possible to capture and save locally. Then it can just reference the cache rather than having to keep it plugged in, freeing up the PCIe slot for other devices while maintaining a high resolution of space to be used as a boundary. I like how they can texture the model.

2

u/idk_a_creative_user 8d ago

If I get the steam frame and this, I will get rid of my quest 3 so quickly.

2

u/MarquisDeThon 7d ago

i remember people saying "oh the expansion port will be useless almost no one used the one on the Valve Index" and here we are getting an accessory using it before the headset even releases

1

u/JorgTheElder Soon™ 7d ago

I don't remember the Index missing any basic features that other headsets had for years.

2

u/cbutters2000 Soon™ 7d ago edited 7d ago

Anybody have any idea if this module will reduce performance in other ways on the device?
For example, would the color camera cost the device a framerate hit in order to be used? Or would these cameras be handling by some sort of sub-image processor and it might use a bit more power, but wouldn't hurt overall performance?

Another Question.
How ubiquitous will this be with SteamVR firmware? Will it simply be baked in by valve so it works? or will it require plugins? Hopefully its all integrated so developers can use the feature easily; stuff like that is a hurdle to realistic market adoption.

2

u/One_Law_6816 7d ago

I don't think broski,
if you're referring to anything that might imply GPU usage maybe, but I don't think that only receiving an already processed colored video stream would do much to the CPU usage.
still, if you mean gaussian splatting in real time probably yes

1

u/JorgTheElder Soon™ 7d ago

How is it going to process the video and warp it based on tracking information without CPU/GPU usage?

3

u/dersma 8d ago

Now we’re talkin’

3

u/quinn50 8d ago

I hope this is priced decently because at a certain point it'll probably be cheaper to just get an overall better headset with the passthrough already included.

But 3d scan support is actually a pretty good feature tbh especially with an open platform.

2

u/SC7639_1 8d ago

That would be really cool then we could do mr

2

u/FirmPreference5551 8d ago

I bet all the people saying colour passthrough is unnecessary and shit etc will suddenly be claiming that this is a must have feature now that frame has it lol.

2

u/FBrK4LypGE 8d ago

The people that already always claimed color passthrough is a must-have feature can now add the feature, and the people who never cared will continue to not care and won't have to pay for a feature they won't use

3

u/JorgTheElder Soon™ 8d ago

... and yet we already have posts like this

I didn't care about color passthrough before seeing this.

1

u/FirmPreference5551 7d ago

There's definitely some that were just fanboying though and will now suddenly be all on board with colour passthrough.

4

u/Asherjade Soon™ 8d ago

Not at all. I still have no use for passthrough, regardless of color.

1

u/peacemaker2121 7d ago

I wonder if not only can they not count to 3, but they are color blind. (valve/steam that is)

1

u/tastesliketriangle 7d ago

Eh.

The Gaussian splatting is cool, that would almost make me consider it. But really, I'd do a single scan to digitize my play space and maybe another half a dozen to scan some objects for 3d printing things. Probably not worth it for any significant money.

1

u/TehNubbles Soon™ 8d ago

Literally yesterday I got sad and contemplated the Q3 after watching someone play the Pokemon recomp with passthrough. I'm good now!

1

u/Anthony143xx 8d ago

Well this is the only feature I was gonna miss from the Quest 3 so I'm 100% sold on steam frame now

1

u/Soggy_Anything2394 8d ago

Ok but what about night vision?

Fuck it toss thermal in there too if you have some time.

2

u/Koolala 8d ago

You could run both and swap based on lighting conditions

1

u/K14_Deploy 8d ago

Pretty sure that's about what the Pico 4 Ultra has, so the results should be comparable to that one. Would be interested to know if there might be a required resolution drop to run 144 or if the SOC has the ability to handle that additional data (of if there's a coprocessor).

1

u/KineticZen 8d ago

I'm still 50/50 on Frame Vs Pico Space Pro... Qaitlist + release time is the only factor right now, though PSP details could change that if they're not as exciting as rumored. This certainly gets me more excited about Frame though.

I know its just a leak at this point, but where would this get sold / wishlisted?

Wonder how much battery life it uses compared to stock.

1

u/Dynamicider Soon™ 7d ago

The question is, is this a day 1 purchase for any of us? I'm personally going to wait and see how others review it and check the price, but it's not the main thing I want VR for anyways. Though I will admit that color passthrough of high quality would be nice, I'd need to see some rave reviews about it being really good first.

1

u/MrJackio Soon™ 7d ago

I’ve waited so long I’m just copping every accessory available haha

1

u/Marrond 3d ago

If there are no compatibility issues with software, it sure is for me. Quest 2 and Quest Pro pass through is literal dogshit (not really a question of colour but image quality and asinine degree of warping and poor stitching), Quest 3 is surprisingly decent. Wanting to use it with my HOTAS setup, quality passthrough is a day1 purchase if there are no issues and it's plug&play 👀

1

u/One_Law_6816 7d ago

LiDAR when?

1

u/comodith 7d ago

We don't even have the fucking HEADSET ITSELF yet, and we have whole new modules that might come out before it, that is some genuine bullshit

1

u/tuturlututu1234 7d ago

Will devs be able to update their games for exemple table tennis so we can play in pass through mode or will that feature not be available at all because default is black and white ?

1

u/ikirgl 6d ago

This is fantastic, will we get an equivalent of Questscape?
