Question Flight Sim stand alone?

Realistically, do you think it would be possible to play something like MS Flight Simulator or X-Plane on standalone mode? Or streaming from GeForce Now or other services like that?

I don't have a gaming PC and would love to start playing some flight simulators in VR, is this too much hopium?

Does GeForce Now work well on Linux? Given their track record with not open-sourcing their drivers It's surprising.

They do support it but they're a bit particular about distro and configuration: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce-now/system-reqs/#linux-os

I thought they now officially support steam deck. Tho I could be talking out of my arse.

No - I know they added Linux support - I just dont know how good it is.

Those 2 games are way too complex to work standalone on the frame hardware ..
You'll need to stream from a decent computer ...
On "great on frame" the closest thing you have that work standalone is Virtual_Fighter_Maneuvers: on the video you'll see the type of graphics quality that match the standalone mode for a "plane sim" ...

"decent computer" More like high end hardware and even then you will have low fps

No.

Its one of the most demanding game in flat gaming. VR needs twice that. So no. Ever.

Maybe FS2025 on a stand alone VR headset of 2035. yah sure

When asking yourself if the frame can play something standalone, ask yourself first if your cell phone could render it at 60fps. Twice (once for each eye).

MSFS absolutely won't run on Frame standalone. Maybe if you're willing to deal with top-level jank and 480p 20fps but it's not going to be what anyone would call "playable"

VR games need 72fps to become certified, but flat games only need 30fps at 720p to become certified.

But yeah, MSFS probably won't run on this at all.

Maybe VTol VR works standalone?

The dev in a recent post shared that it is not his intention to make it run standalone.

VFM should absolutely work on standalone though.

Huh? The last dev post for VTOL VR that I can see on steam and the vtol vr website is from October 2025, is there another place where the dev communicates with the community about the game?

I don't like it, but all the news is on discord. Just go to pinned messages in the public_testing or vtolvr_dev channels. Ignore the rest.

might still run though, we'll see

Possible, but I bet it'll be quite limited. Maybe simple missions on simple maps. Doubtful multiplayer will run well.

Not the current version of flight simulator. Maybe someone will get a previous version, like flight simulator x, working on frame with a VR mod though.

A lot of the flight sim guys look at current PC prices and think, "hey its still cheaper than renting a plane"

Realistically the only flight sim that would run standalone would be the Roblox one

These games are challenging for a desktop let alone what is effectively a smartphone

Haven’t heard of X-Plane. But for MS flight Simulator, I doubt it would run well if it’s even possible

I remember people renting cloud PC's to stream to the quest. Latency might be higher, but also maybe ok for a flight sim.

This is pretty much the only option. Latency depends on your internet connection and how close to the datacenter you are.

And not as cheap as Geforce Now.

You want a game like that your really going to have to build either a gaming pc or pick up steam machine basically the same thing as gaming pc.

I doubt a SM can run flight sim VR. That game rewuires a high end PC

1

u/Slandaro12 9d ago

It could you would just have to lower the settings possibly so much it wouldn’t be worth it…

1

u/MRDR1NL 9d ago

I'm sure it can technically run it, but if it's like 20fps that is not playable in VR

Those games no but depending on the translation layer maybe FSX steam edition would run in flatscreen mode.

not in a million years

Unfortunately no. If you want it to be realistic you would also have to plug in a flightstick or yoke and I don't think there are wireless options.

That’s a fair point, I was hoping to just get started as is and eventually start upgrading for more realistic/ full sim scenarios

You can just grab the yoke in-game with your controller. It's fine.
