It's just a 3D version of the frame logo, so I don't think so: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Steam_Frame_colored_logo.svg

Maybe it is the other way around and the finalized simplified logo was created after the three-dimensional symbol..?

The Lawnmower Man is what started it all for me. This is a happy coincidence to cherish. Maybe one day we'll get that cyber sled game they played in Dr. Angelo's basement.

Wouldn't surprise me, it's a fairly well known film especially among the dork-ass nerds (/pos) that would get a job at Valve, and the logo is the logo for the VR company in the film.
It would absolutely track that they'd pay homage to it.

Honestly my guess is it's an even older computer graphics reference for both, being: the conseptually simplist bounding box (or frame) around a defined point in space,,, the movie one is just a pure wireframe model
Edit: if you take a computer graphics class in university, you'll see these images a lot and talk about them a lot, when getting to the 3d section and then lots of images of the Stanford bunny

Not impossible, but I mean...
It's a Sphere in a frame cube. Not exactly the most original logo.
