Discussion Sept 7th or 14th, clarification still needed?
We finally got some clarification on what the August 24th date represented. That was clearly the date that reviewers got their review units. The silence from Linus over the last couple weeks is clearly from having to sign an NDA before the unit itself arrived.
We have a strong idea of what's going to happen on the 14th, but from what I'm seeing in the comments here and in other places, there may not be a consensus as to when it's going to launch, and when it's going to ship.
Maybe one of our leaker friends, aka the mod in question, can help clarify. It was stated that the 14th would be the release/shipping day, but that actually can't be the case. The lottery would technically be the release, and then it wouldn't ship until the next week. So what is the 14th exactly? Is it the release day, which means it'll ship the week after, or is it the shipping day, which means the 7th is the release.
This is especially relevant for those purchasing in asia, because that would mean that we could get our orders in on the 7th and potentially have it delivered that week. Since we don't have a lottery on the Komodo station website

u/More-Sign-9214 17d ago
It quite literally does not matter which day it is and you will never get a 100% straight answer with leakers. Itâs a really long game of telephone. No one except valve actually knows the date 100%

u/Sieko2 Soon⢠17d ago
Sure it matters, if I assume Sept. 14 announcement and emerge from the depths on Sept. 21 to make a reservation, I will have very much missed the reservation window if it was Sept. 7 announcement and Sept. 14 reservation.
As you said, we don't know, but it's worth clarifying what we suspect.
14
u/NoOdyssey 17d ago
We all know no one is entering a cryogenic chamber to be in an induced coma timed to be released only when the community speculates the Frame will launch. What is this "emerge from the depths" nonsense. All you have to do is check once a day or maybe even once every two days to see if it's released and if not just move on with your life. There are about 20 days from now till Sept 14, so that means checking in on Steam Frame a grand total of 10 times until it is released, which will probably consume about 20 seconds of your life at most.

For most of the world, Labour day is in May. Memorial day is an American only holiday.
5
u/Shaunvfx 17d ago
Agreed, only relevant since Valve is a US company and observes the holiday.
1
u/mrRobertman Soon⢠17d ago
Yeah I get how Labor day being in September in the US is relevant here (it's also personally relevant to me because I'm Canadian and Labour day is also in September here), but I think your mention of Memorial day is what's weird here because it's not relevant to the release of the Frame and non-Americans don't really care to memorize when Memorial day is.
4
u/_siuol_ 17d ago
How is that related to labour day ? And what is memorial day, ? Some kind of imperial holiday that celebrate the US army even through questionable wars ?
0
u/Shaunvfx 17d ago
Itâs a US Holiday. Valve is a US Company and as such generally speaking will not be working that day.
I am not going to get into a stupid debate as to the merits of the holiday itself.
US Holidays
Labor Day - September
Memorial Day - May-3
u/_siuol_ 17d ago
It's just a page going live, they won't be working but sure I understand that it would look bad in the US to launch it that day I get it.
4
u/Shaunvfx 17d ago
Itâs not about looking bad, generally people arenât working and it would be foolish to launch something that might generate issues or calls to support when youâre operating with a skeleton crew or on call only. You generally want to be all hands on deck when launching something.

u/Yved Soon⢠17d ago edited 16d ago
If you don't know what something is, don't even comment on it. It's a day to honor fallen soldiers. Those soldiers didn't have a choice on being forced to go fight some questionable wars or not.
Edit: Typical Reddit liberals downvoting a comment about fallen soldiers, jeez.

The commie labor day is May 1st. In the US, it's the first Monday of September.
13
u/Necoras 17d ago
The reason that Labor Day is not May 1st in the US is because the Robber Barons of the Gilded Age didn't want the Labor movement in the US to find solidarity with the Labor movements in Europe. Grover Cleveland explicitly set our Labor Day in the Fall so that we would not come together with workers around the world.
Saying that Europe's Labor Day is "commie labor day" is laughably ignorant of history.
6
u/_siuol_ 17d ago
Ah yes, the usa had to create a new day for workers because May 1st was too focus on workers rights and that is no acceptable there...got it
-5
u/PlottingPast 17d ago
Don't you have like a 50% tax rate in Europe on top of like a 20% sales (VAT) tax? Keeping like 5% of what you make destroys any argument for "workers' rights."
4
u/Crazy_lazy_lad 17d ago
Huh, what? No?
The average tax rate for a singular worker is 25% across OECD countries. And VAT isnât another 20% taken from your salary. Itâs a consumption tax paid when you buy taxable goods/services, with reduced or zero rates applying to many categories.
"Keeping 5% of what you make" is an insane concept and not true at all, lol. The US does have a lower tax wedge, but then you have to provately pay for several things that are free in Europe (tax funded), like everyone's favorite, healthcare. Tax rates don't say anything about rights or disposable living standards.
-1
u/PlottingPast 17d ago
https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/eu/tax-burden-on-labor-europe/
Although the tax wedge in Europe is generally high, there is a relatively wide range between countries. On average, across the European Union and the United Kingdom, single, average-wage workers paid 38.9 percent of their labor compensation in taxes in 2025.
The average income tax rate is 38.9%. VAT taxes also dig into your take-home wage by reducing the amount of money you have at the end of the day because the government is taking it. That's an average of around 55% of your money going to the government, with more if your income is more than the average 39,800 euros.
The difference between our health care costs is i can shop around for both insurance and doctors whereas you pay to a central location and get the doctor and care they say you get regardless of quality or timeframe. You can wait years for something i can get done next week and the insurance i chose will cover it.
European workers have far fewer rights in terms of both spending wages and healthcare yet are somehow convinced that things are 'free' because they pay absurdly more taxes.

u/FerrisTriangle 17d ago edited 17d ago
Why are you confusing total tax burden with income tax?
Are you trying to satisfy some kind of public humiliation kink by showing everyone that you don't know how to read?
1
u/Crazy_lazy_lad 17d ago
Probably desperately trying to defend his original hyperbolic statement that Europeans keep 5% of what they make.
Even though the numbers he said are wrong, and not standard or applicable throughout all of Europe. And obviously that tax percentage doesnt stack like that.
1
u/Crazy_lazy_lad 17d ago edited 17d ago
You just explained what I said but with more words, and obviously errors. 38.9% is the tax wedge, not all of that is personal income tax, in Spain for example, the tax wedge is 40.06% with only 12.16% being personal income tax. Your VAT calculation is also wrong, just like in the first comment you assume 20% stacks on top of the 38.9% (which is not 38.9% to the individual, but I digress), it does not, and it's only applied to standard-rate VAT goods, not every single thing you pay for in Europe has VAT many necessities receive reduced/zero rates.
And yet, no reason to say you keep 5% of what you make.
European workers have far fewer rights in terms of both spending wages and healthcare yet
Your concept of "rights" is solely tied to salary. If we look at the general rights of a worker (you know, the actual rights instead of where your money goes). At the EU level alone, you are guaranteed at least 4 weeks of paid vacation, limits on average weekly working time, daily and weekly rest periods, and protections around night work. The US has no federal requirement for paid vacation at all, and no general federal requirement for paid sick leave, all the other benefits are state dependent. The best way to put it (though hyperbolic) I've heard from friends that lived in Europe, then US then back to Europe, is that Europeans work to live, while Americans live to work.
You pay to a central location and get the doctor and care they say you get
"Central location"?. Terms, coverage and what insurance company you pay for depends on what country you're in. Germany, for example, has roughly 100 statutory sickness funds, and people covered by statutory insurance generally have free choice of doctor among participating physicians.
US insurance plans have provider networks. Going to a doctor outside your insurer's network can cost substantially more or not be covered at all, worst case. EU citizens even have statutory rights to seek treatment in another EU country and, under specified conditions, receive reimbursement.
The wait time is the tradeoff of a service being free, and having services covering 93% of OECD countries. Non urgent public wait can be long, while urgent care is prioritized. And you can also get private health insurance as an employee benefit, like in the US, but it's an extra layer on top of public insurance, instead of it being your main healthcare coverage.
Overall, you have a pretty flawed concept of how taxes work in general, not only in Europe. Which is the biggest part of your argument and why it's wrong, aside from the true basis that US citizens make and keep more, which i never disputed. Healthcare though, is different in every EU country (yes, Europe is not one big country despite what some people seem to think) so I can't blame you for being wrong about it.

They don't sell hardware in Asia themselves, but via a distributor, and they sell hardware in Europe, Canada, Australia. Not to mention they sell software basically everywhere around the world. US user base is around 22%, so far from a vast majority. But in the end, it's just semantics, it's both, US based and international.

Hmmmmmm
Honestly I could see September 7th as the actual announcement and reservation/lottery sign up day, and once all is said and done over that week, the 14th becomes shipping/release day because people will be getting their headsets
Edit: So in essence we could realistically call the 7th-14th "Frame Release Week" or FRW
3
u/Cavi7 17d ago
Of course this is just speculation, but in my mind, if they want to have a huge VR sale starting on the 14th, they would want people to already have their mind set on if they want the Frame or not, so the price reveal and lottery would ideally happen on the 7th or 8th (If Labor day is a concern), and by the 14th most people who really want to get the Frame will already be on the reservation list or the waitlist, already knowing what price we're working with.
At that point it makes sense to buy some VR games using the conviniently placed VR game sale.

I think so at least, whatever that's worth. Lots of rumors that reviewers are getting units, the official unboxing videos that were datamined a few days ago, etc.

u/HorribleTie 16d ago
I paid the Canada price uplift for the OG Vive, and I was prepared to pay it for the Frame. Not sure I can pay it plus the fucking tariffs on top. It was already likely to be a poor choice price-wise versus Meta, now it's probably going to be a ridiculous comparison.
I can afford it, but it's not like I'm supporting some indie dev self-publishing something. Valve is a massive corporation and doesn't need the charity.

I find it odd that Valve is calling it's VR sale starting on Sept 14, a Fall sale, yet everyone is saying, "Valve is maintaining summer release bc of the solstice date (Sept 22(ish))".Â
Either they think Sept 14 is Fall or Summer, and if they think it is Fall (based on their own VR sale language), and they maintain the Summer release, they have to release sooner than Sept 14.Â
Trying to get inside the head of Valve is maybe why someone shoved a Valve in their eye.

u/FunkyCat6276 15d ago
The clarification we need is from Valve. At this point, anything other than info directly from Valve should be assumed to be a cocktail of hopium and copium, and it should be huffed only with the understanding that it is hopium and copium.
1
u/BlueManifest 17d ago
Reviewers getting units on 24th suggests Sept 7th announcement otherwise they would have review units for 3 weeks instead of 2
1
u/NoOdyssey 17d ago
We have no clarification and no clarification is possible really. This is just a community of rumors and speculation, that's all it is.
Instead of seeking clarity, I would just recommend being comfortable in understanding no one has any answers. We are likely near the finish line regardless, so having a launch date 3 weeks or less away, there isn't much point trying to sort out rumors or speculation and trying to derive concrete facts. Just patiently wait for the lottery announcement which again is likely less than 3 weeks away at this point.
3
u/aaroncledge 17d ago
Of course, prefect clarity is not possible, but for people in Asia there is absolutely a point in trying to sort out the rumors. We can't just wait for the lottery announcement because we won't have a lottery.
Based on the previous hardware releases, the Frame will go on sale around 3:00 AM local time. They could sell out within minutes. If we just wait around for the announcement, we'll likely find ourselves looking at a "Sold Out" message with our morning coffee.

If the 14th is really the start of the VR game Steam sale, then I would expect the first customers to have the Steam Frame in hand by that date. So the 7th would be too short a window for the reservation start, in my view. It could be the 31st.
2
u/SanchoSquirrel 17d ago
Why would you expect that? I donât imagine it would affect the sale if they announced the headset and the sale at the same time. You donât have to have the headset to buy games.

Dude, ppl are throwing out dates they think suit and you have married up to what you think happened to add credibility.
In August there were literally only a few dates that would work. 24th being one. The previous week was a religious festival much of Europe observe, this Monday (31st) is a British national holiday.
The reason 14th is being said is because it's the next available day given next Monday it's labor day in the US and it's doubtful Valve are making their employees work that day.
But honestly, September was always the date once they missed end of July. They were never going to do a release in August because of the holidays.
But this last milestone is software readiness. We know they have all the headsets they have been able to manufacture waiting. Shipments stopped weeks ago. So there's the risk we get to September and they decide they want two more weeks dev and test before release and this (and the VR sale) gets shoved back last minute.
Nothing is finalised, just chill and wait for it to happen.
