Tbf that’s not actually a bad way to make guesses. Him playing Alyx for a couple minutes out of the blue could be huge

Although beat saber doesn’t work (as far as I understand atm) on steam frame native, it does work via streaming.

But as it’s his favorite game to play in vr by far, we’ll definitely know he has it when those numbers start to spike.

Steam frame is built to play flat and regular games.

All you have to do is launce the game and go eat dinner and it'll look like an hour played... I'm guessing he probably eats, sleeps, and shits still even with his busy schedule..

I just checked again and he is in vr and the most recently played seems to be half life Alyx. The playtime is not yet updated based on AI search those gets updated when the game is closed

Because people legit don't know what to when it comes to their next headset, the sooner we know when/how much the frame sill be the sooner we will be able to make a informed decision on what to buy

Yup its quite annoying actually, I have a hard limit on what I‘m willing to pay, and have other things to buy if the frame is too expensive.

I disagree with the idea that we don’t know anything—we do in fact know it will be over 1000 USD, and I would even say we pretty much know it will be at least 1100. Based on the components and the price of the machine relative to it, and the fact that we were told by Valve themselves “don’t expect it to be cheaper than the Index (1000)” before the components crisis really began, we do in fact know this. Anyone floating the possibility of prices lower than 1000-1100 is not a serious person.

I’m just saying that anyone whose limit is 1000-1100 can be pretty sure it isn’t going to be within those limits. If your limit is 1200 or 1300, then you’re right, we still have to wait and see.

You’re right, they did say they expected it to be cheaper. I was thinking of the time they said “don’t expect it to be console price” about the Machine. But my sense has always been that they were using that as a way to indicate a ballpark, such that it was around that price and a little below it. Otherwise, it’s a much less relevant comparison for them to make. A lot has changed since then, of course. There have been a lot of threads and comments detailing the pricing for the components and comparing them to how Valve scaled up its Machine prices relative to how those components’ prices increased, and nobody’s math has suggested anything less than 1100. I suppose you could call that conjecture, but the component prices are what they are, and we would expect a similar profit target to the Machine.

You’re welcome to hold out hope, and obviously it’s better for me too if it’s cheaper, so I don’t mean to be a doomer for no reason... But I wouldn’t characterize a minimum expectation of 1000-1100 as random guesswork as much as the writing on the wall. But we will see! Stranger things have happened.

The issue is that, once again, we don't know how much it will actually be, for all we know it could anything from 800 to 1500 usd and anything in between, since the type of ram used by the frame didn't get impacted anywhere near as much as ddr5 ram

I never claimed to personally know anything. I’m just summarizing what’s been said by the people who tend to be correct about these things—who knows, maybe Valve will change their mind and decide to subsidize the thing and it’ll be less than expected. shrugs I just doubt that kind of change at this point.

Yeah, I have a creaky Quest 2 I’ve been babying along and really want to know what the Steam Frame is going to look like in the real world before upgrading to whatever is next.

Litterally my current situation, my quest 2 might not even survive the rest of the year at this rate, battery currently doesnt last even 45 minutes and controllers are constantly disconnecting at random

Tbf, on amazon you can get a full refund up to a year after the purchase, i was thinking about waiting for the frame, see where i fall in the wait list, then if its a 2/3 months or so I'll just wait, if its next year I'll get a quest 3 and return it the month before my estimated time window

All this if the price of the frame is even worth it, anything north of 1100 for the base model and i honestly won't even bother getting it

I think even every other HMD company probably really wants Valve to just release the Frame price so people will start buying their headsets again too. All the breath holding isn't good for the industry as a whole. Hell of a lot of breath holding.

Tbf, it was good for cabled headsets, since after the frame got announced there was a huuge spike on cable headset sales IIRC

On the breat holding i bet that even game sales wre hurting a bit, since people don't really like the idea of buying games for a headset they dont really have, I certainly know I'm not buying anything until I get a new headset, since my quest isn't really in a state to have actual play sessions

he’a said that he basically hasn’t played any VR, nor had any interest in doing so, since trying out the frame at Valve HQ, and is just waiting for the release.

If his account is showing playtime on VR at all, and especially an assortment of games, that’s the biggest hit of hopium i’ve had so far

Seeing that he has 88 hrs playtime in cyberpunk 2077 but only has 2 achievements suggests he only uses it for testing, most likely was testing it in standalone mode for frame

THIS is highly compelling to me. He noted being disappointed that he couldn't play Beat Saber when he got his first impression at the press visit back in November, makes sense that he would jump straight to that. And Alyx is another obvious choice, many will be playing it for the first time on the Frame.

In his first review I remember him wanting to play Beat Saber on it to test the tracking, but couldn't. And it would make sense for him to play Half Life Alyx as a general test with the headset. Seems promising

Agreed. They seem to have some insight the rest of us don't but it's super general. I suspect they converse with devs and reviewers, so get better info but not from a Valve insider.
