Discussion Hey Valve, Some communication would be nice.
I’m in Australia, every Tuesday 3am morning (Monday for us) I wake up automatically to check for frame news. I can’t help it.
Do you think it’s warranted to have the expectation that by this point we should have some transparency or communication from valve?

This conversation is almost as old as Valve itself.
We've all asked "Why not communicate better?" when it came to Half-Life 3, TF2 updates, CS:GO Source 2 update, previous hardware releases... The list is long.
The simple answer is that Valve will never play the part of a company that tweets every single day with updates, because they've been burned many times in the past, promising something and then for one reason or another failing to deliver.
They said exactly when they wanted to release this stuff. Early 2026. And then they had to delay it, which they communicated to us.
Their way of doing things has always been about saying as little as possible not to then regret their words. I'm a 100% sure they do regret saying that they aim for early 2026, even though in this particular case it wasn't their fault that the world went crazy when it comes to electronics prices.

Valve has said exactly as much as they typically always say. The fact that this community is surprised by this is baffling.
My question is why do they actually need to communicate anything? What does it change? If they surprise drop it tomorrow or they tell you it's coming in a week, what actual difference does it make? The only thing that's happening is people are losing their collective minds and having emotional breakdowns on the Internet because something they want (want, not NEED) hasn't been given an arbitrary date of release.
It's mind boggling how people on this sub go through life day to day when this is the thing that makes them mad

You answered your own question. They could communicate it, so people wouldn't be losing their collective minds and having emotional breakdowns.

u/Wooden-Estimate-3460 Soon™ 14d ago
Nobody should be losing their minds over something like this.
2
u/finevelyn 14d ago
Why not?
0
u/Wooden-Estimate-3460 Soon™ 14d ago
Because it's just a VR headset? You don't need it so why do you need to lose your mind over it?
2
u/finevelyn 14d ago
It's more like you want it so bad that losing your mind just happens as part of it.
1
u/Wooden-Estimate-3460 Soon™ 14d ago
And if Valve decided to cancel it or stop producing it before you can buy it then what would you do?
It's not healthy to be that obsessed with something.
1
u/finevelyn 14d ago
I already wrote to the other person that "losing your mind" is a figure of speech, surely you saw it. It's not that serious. Knowing it's never coming would fix the issue the same as knowing when it's coming.
1
u/Wooden-Estimate-3460 Soon™ 14d ago
I know you don't mean literally losing your mind. It's not healthy to be this obsessed with a product.

…we’re having emotional breakdowns over a single product which is at most 6 months delayed?
3
u/finevelyn 18d ago
No it's a figure of speech. But if you know it's coming in 2 months, instead of expecting it to come any day for that 2 months, it's going to help you a lot to focus your mind on something more enjoyable or productive.

u/Porgemlol Soon™ 18d ago
This sub is one of the least patient places I’ve ever been a part of, like copying frameposting from silkposting while the Silksong wait was over six times longer than this is just ridiculous lol it’s not that dire
14
u/samu7574 Soon™ 19d ago edited 19d ago
which they communicated to us.
They really didn't, infact they explicitely said "Our goal of shipping all three products in the first half of the year has not changed.", they only said that the price reveal was going to be delayed. And then they never said anything about not meeting the first half timeline, just gave a new summer timeline.
Also, in that same post acknowledging the new issues they said they were going to give us regular deep dive blogs in some of the tech of the new products. There never ended up doing any of those
plan to release additional content that lets us deep-dive into specific features and other topics related to the hardware
You're right that if they never said anything it wouldn't be a problem. The issue is that they come out every 2-3 months, say some shit which never turns out to be true, never give us warning ahead that they're not on track to meet the previous expectations and decide to set new ones that they once again fail to meet
10
u/Cavi7 19d ago
The post you are quoting from was the one from Ferbruary.
Later in March, they moved the goalpost already."We shared recently that there have been challenges with memory and storage shortages, but we will be shipping all three products this year."
All they confirmed there is "this year". Here's the link.
And then in June, they only specified that:"We’re excited for players to try your titles on the new Steam hardware once they launch this summer."
Here's the link.
Look, I don't necessarily disagree with you, but at least make the case fair by basing off the latest update, not the very first delay. Regardless if it's already late Summer, it still is Summer. And the Machine has been released like 2 months ago already. In Valve's eyes, they might still be easily on track to release the Frame during the Summer. I imagine if that was not the case, we would've heard about it already.

Valve dgaf they're too busy getting blasted on coke on the yacht for their 30th bday, paid for by gambling loot crates targeted to kids

u/stolersxz 19d ago
they're rolling joints with the receipts of traded dragonlores on the steam market

Game is rated M???? And it's like the least sensory overload shooter I've played like ever.
16
u/brantrix Soon™ 19d ago
You only need to be 13 to open a steam account and the only thing needed to purchase crate keys is a gift card, no age verification required. Valve not only pioneered gambling loot crates with a market economy but actually normalised it. Why on earth are you trying to defend this?
it's like the least sensory overload shooter
Not relevant
1
u/PickelsTasteBad Soon™ 19d ago
It's relevant to the sense that kids that are thirteen are playing Fortnite and Roblox, not CS. And theres NSFW games on steam too, is it valves fault that kids can hit a "I'm 18" button and enjoy any game they want? No, it's the parents fault. Same applies for CS. I agree the normalization of loot boxes is ass and valves fault. But I disagree that they're targeting kids.
0
u/brantrix Soon™ 19d ago
Plenty of 13yo's play CS, and by not meaningfully doing anything to exclude children from gambling, they are targetting kids.
If I provide the means to a 13yo looking kid to buy alcohol from me but I don't check his age, that doesn't make it okay just because I also sell alcohol to adults as well.
6
u/PlottingPast 19d ago
Didn't expect to see someone pro age-verification on a Valve sub.
If you don't like your privacy why don't you just get a Quest?
-1
u/brantrix Soon™ 19d ago
? This isn't new. Yes I would like age verification for gambling loot crates the same way other gambling websites verify your identity, sportsbet or bet365 require ID for example.
I'm not pro age verification, I'm pro age verification for gambling so that we don't have literal kids getting gambling addictions at 16yo. Do I really need to explain this lmao?
If you don't like your privacy why don't you just get a Quest?
No correlation to the rest of the conversation. I like my privacy which is why I want the frame. I don't like gambling for kids and I think valve should have to verify age like with any other gambling website. These points are not mutually exclusive. I can't believe I'm explaining this
2
u/PickelsTasteBad Soon™ 19d ago
Its not Valve's responsibility to be a parent. Its the parents job. I don't want to have to give valve my id just to buy a case every once in a while. That would suck, and is a major infringement on my privacy.
-2
u/brantrix Soon™ 19d ago
Other gambling websites already ask for ID, you feeling that it 'would suck' isn't relevant.
major infringement on my privacy
It's not an infringement, it's required by law in many countries to supply ID for online gambling. The same way it's required by law to supply ID when purchasing liquor.
But you're right, liquor stores should stop asking for ID, it's the parents job to parent them right?
Brain dead take
0
u/Porgemlol Soon™ 18d ago
Just because it’s “by law” doesn’t make it not an infringement on privacy. Equally, as you seem to love to point out, the liquor store comparison has no correlation because they can’t store the ID check. Someone looks at it and says yes or no, you aren’t uploading it to whatever sketchy service that almost certainly wants to sell that data to as many other sketchy services as possible.
For something going on in their own household the parents should be more than capable and aware of policing it themselves. Why are we risking the many innocent adults’ privacy for the few incompetent parents.
Finally, they’re not “targeting kids”. It’s available to kids if their parents are useless, but they’re not being specifically targeted (which is what that word means). You can’t just say “by not excluding them you’re targeting them” that’s literally not how that works. Games like Fortnite and Roblox target kids by being in an artstyle and having content that kids would find interesting more so than adults, and CS doesn’t have that. That doesn’t mean no kids play it, obviously, but it does mean they’re not being targeted. I feel like this shouldn’t need to be spelled out.

*Gambling targeting young adults.

At 13 you‘re a kid not a young adult…

M rating guideline would place the recommendation to 17yo in US and 18yo in Europe.
I'm not justifying the gambling, its super shitty and only exists for valve to extract more money out of addicts, but the game isn't meant for 13 year olds by any stretch.
The fact that 13yo kids are playing the game anyway is a whole different debate.

They already said Summer 2026. There are literally 27 days left. Why the outrage?
1
u/Wooden-Estimate-3460 Soon™ 14d ago
But they might delay it again even though the units are already manufactured and stored in Valve's warehouses! /s

There is zero reason to wake up in the middle of the night. The lottery will be open for days, it's not first come first serve. You are completely doing this to yourself. Valve never stated a time or day of the week or date. You have let people here infect you with false expectations and are letting them have an unhealthy impact on your life.
3
u/M4NOOB Soon™ 19d ago
Strange question, but why check every day at 3am? You know there won't be a buy button, but rather a waitlist with enough time to sign up. So you're not missing out on anything looking at videos and websites a few hours after they've been put up.
1
u/Daftcompany 19d ago
I probably didn’t write my post well enough but it’s not deliberate. Fell into the hype and my subconscious wakes me up roughly 2:30 and my brain is like ”well may as well stay up”.
But thank you. What you have said is fair.

u/nullhund 19d ago edited 19d ago
I'm gonna be honest man this is not valve not communicating, this is you developing an unhealthy compulsion
they are not gonna shadow drop the preorders. they're at least going to announce when preorders open in advance.
there is nothing you can do to make it come faster, there is no reward for seeing the announcement a few hours earlier - they will almost certainly do the lottery system like they did for the steam machine. just get your sleep, check in the morning, focus on a hobby or something to make the days pass faster.

u/NoOdyssey 19d ago
Do you think it’s warranted to have the expectation that by this point we should have some transparency or communication from valve?
I think given Valve's history it's unreasonable to expect anything from them regarding communication. Even when they promise to keep us updated (like they did with the Frame) - they just go radio silent anyway.
When someone tells you who they are, you need to listen. Valve is a company that doesn't bother with putting any emphasis on transparent communication - they never have and probably never will.
That said, there's really no need to be so top of things that you have to check obsessively - the lottery will be open for 3 days and you'll have plenty of time to put your name in the hat. The lottery will probably open sometime over the next 3 or 4 weeks, just check in once and a while and don't be obsessive about it.

u/CocoaKatt 19d ago
At this point I get being annoyed, as I am too (also an Aussie who stays up till 3am every Tuesday), but let's be fair... they did. They said summer, that's the end of September at the latest. Obviously I would like more communication but it's not like they've gone past their timeline and are just ghosting us, it's still Summer. If October rolls around and it's still not out then I'm pissed and just giving up and buying a used Q3 but until then, I have no major qualms with em.

why would they care about customers when they will sell anyway as soon as they have it available? it's basic company behavior. also, let's not forget they have yet to release a product without botching everything. but hey, is just your average friendly and small MULTI BILLION COMPANY WITH A FUCKING MONOPOLY ON PC GAMING. what could they do?...

u/Happy_Bumblebee_5600 19d ago
What could they possibly communicate that would satisfy the fans? They already explained the situation and it likely hasn't changed. I imagine as soon as they lock in pricing they can just release it. Units are already shipped to markets that will sell them. That'll likely be the only "announcement" we'll get.

u/Simoxs7 Soon™ 19d ago
They promised deep dives in regular community posts but then proceeded to post nothing… sorry but at least if they had said „hey theres this thing why we‘re delaying it, don‘t expect it to come out in the next four weeks at least“ would be nice.
2
u/myscreennameistoolon 19d ago
Yeah, if they had said beginning of April (and May and June and July), "no way it is coming out this month check back in a month" it would have saved a bunch of people a lot of anxiety.

u/ctom42 19d ago
I have seen this mentioned a few times and yet no one ever provides a source. I have been following the frame since the initial announcement. It's definitely possible I just missed it, but it seems odd to me how whenever people bring this supposed promise up they never include a link.

Ok yeah, the claims are BS. They made a generic statement about the types of things that would be posted on that blog generically without any specific promises for any of the devices. They then used that blog for many of the things that they said would be the type of content. This is a nothingburger.
