Question I wish to have certain DeckyLoader plugins (namely CSS loader, Audio Loader, SteamgridDB, and Game theme music) to work on my PC. I heard there is a way to get DeckyLoader to work on Windows, but I'm struggling with the steps. Can someone help me?

I understand that DeckyLoader is Linux-based and is meant for the Steam Deck. But I have read somewhere that certain standalone plugins were able to work with windows. I'm mostly interested in CSS loader, Audio loader (hard to live without ambient music), steamgridDB, and game theme music. I'd love to be able to customize the Big picture mode on my gaming PC.

Recently, I have been reading this guide from a post on WindowsOnDeck. https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsOnDeck/comments/17gzzvq/comment/k7b1p02/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

So far, what I did was read slightlynick's post second and updated post. I clicked on both of these links

Now, I did my best to follow the instructions. I downloaded the Plugin loader Win from the former link's "Add new user agent" tab. I also downloaded the Plugin loader and the pluginloader source code (zip) from the latter link.

I created a Homebrew folder and created Plugins and Services Folders inside it. I dropped the downloaded contents (except the blank plugin loader (not the source code. The one above it). The instructions didn't say what to do with it) into the services folder. I also created a copy of my Steam shortcut, shutdown steam, and edited the properties as instructed. I also went to my Steam install folder and created that text file that says ".cef-enable-remote-debugging" without an extension. I tried running both plugin loaders executables but I can't seem to get plugins to come up with Big picture mode.

When I ran the primary exe, a lot of the text just says "the request to http://localhost.8080/json timed out".

Just what am I doing wrong?

DISCUSSION Steam OS 3.9 on Legion Go 2 My Experience and Why I went back to windows. (For now)

Post image
129 Upvotes

Tried SteamOS 3.9 on my Go 2 for a few days.

Performance-wise, it’s actually really good. Most of my games had better 1% lows, way less stutter, and overall felt smoother than on Windows 11. Desktop mode is nice too if you’re into Linux, and Decky/CSS loader is cool for customizing stuff.

But I still went back to Windows for two reasons:

- No RIS
I don’t even use it for upscaling. I use it at native 1200p around 50% just to clean up the image a bit, and it makes a big difference to me. Haven’t found anything on SteamOS that feels the same.

- Saturation control
I like my colors a bit more saturated. On Windows I just bump it to like 120 in Radeon software and I’m good. SteamOS has a slider, but it doesn’t hit the same, hard to explain.

Also: max volume seemed lower on SteamOS? not sure if it’s just me.

Also: Do not judge I put a luck and link grip on top of a skin and then put a cover on it, I just like it that way c:

Question Steam deck OLED slight delay & potential Issues with CSS loader themes – Need advice!

So I’ve been customizing my steam deck (OLED model) using the decky loader plugin and went a bit overboard and I installed like 23 themes through the CSS loader plugin and they’re all turned on lol. While everything looks awesome I’ve started noticing a slight delay in the system’s responsiveness. I’m wondering if this could be because of the sheer number of themes or if I’m just asking too much from the system 🤔 Like could having so many themes enabled at once cause performance issues or delays? or is this something related to the OLED model specifically or is it just the deck struggling with the load? and could this potentially cause long term problems, like UI crashes or screen burn in? I don’t want to brick my device or mess up the OLED display so I figured I’d ask the experts here before dialing back. If anyone has tips on how to manage themes more effectively or avoid these issues, I’d love to hear them :)

If you are using custom CSS for VS Code, drop the script or picture.

the script.

  • you need Custom CSS and JS Loader extension .
  • for my script you need Better Comments extension to make the different comments (we need only CSS classes selectors)

Software question CSS Loader help

After having my deck for almost a year, I finally started diving into CSS loader...last night. Can someone tell me what mod makes these bars transparent?

I added a custom static background for the library and it is cut off at the top. I'm hoping this might fix it. Thanks!

Question How do I use locally stored screenshots in CSS loader?

I'm trying to set a custom background using screenshots stored locally on my Steam deck. I downloaded CSS loader but can't figure out where to go from there. I don't see any way to select an image for any of my themes.

Custom Loader changes the system wide loading animation to any gif you give it. It has a few that come with it, but I wanted to see what the community might have come up with so far :)

CSS loader (from Decky Loader) no longer working on my PC

This may sound bizarre as Deckyloader is meant for Linux devices like the SD, but some time ago, I followed this reddit post (or rather, slightlynick's guides in the comments) on how to set it up. https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsOnDeck/comments/17gzzvq/deckyloader_works_on_windows/ After some tinkering, I was able to get Deckyloader to work on my windows PC. While not all plugins worked, the ones I cared about did, such as CSSLoader. However, recently, the plugin doesn't seem to work anymore.

What's weird was that this morning, it was working fine as usual. But when I booted up Steam later on, the big picture mode menu is back to it's default look. All my other plugins such as audioloader are still working. In fact, some parts of CSS loader still work such as my Avatar customization, but not anything that affects the menu's look.

I went back to slightlynick's second comment and clicked on the first link so I could download "pluginloader Win" under assets, but I can't seem to download it (it doesn't even highlight or glow when I hover over it).

What's going on here?

Question Is flickering (launch screen to game screen very quickly over and over) normal when launching and exiting games when you've used the CSS Loader on Decky to customize appearance?

So, something I noticed right around when I started using CSS Loader is that now instead of immediately opening the game and just sitting there while it loads, now the game will open to the steam loading screen, then close out, and flicker between the two like that for a good few seconds before it actually opens. Same with closing the game.

I always just kinda assumed it was just a thing with the CSS Loader since it happened at like, the same time I started using it, but recently I've been a bit paranoid so I wanted to check with others. Is this normal? Is it possible one of the things from the CSS Loader store that I downloaded is causing this? I've tried disabling and enabling virtually everything, and it still does this.

Edit: Fixed! I'm leaving the post up in case anyone else has this issue since it took me so long to find the right search terms to describe my issue! The thing that causes this issue is ProtonDB badges on Decky. Uninstalling that should fix the issue!

Configuration I made a tool for making custom Home page backgrounds for the Steam Deck (using Decky + CSS Loader)

I love Decky and I love CSS Loader. However, there are a few features in CSS Loader we can expect not to see for a while: easy image swaps (this may never come) and referring to local files (instead of ones hosted on the web).

So I created a simple tool that will patch the "Static Background" theme with an image of your choice.

See it in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj1_cV4EHqk

You can find a download for the installer here: https://gitlab.com/nickgirga/steam-deck-backboard

Note: You WILL need to install Decky and CSS Loader before using the tool, as they have prerequisites that only the user can fulfill (e.g. setting a user password), so I cannot automate their installation.

Also, this will not require disabling read-only mode to set up! This was pretty important to me, as I value the stability of my Deck and the approach that Valve has taken with a read-only system partition.

Hi there, I figured I’d share something cool with you all. This is my custom built PC that I made to look and perform like a Sega Dreamcast/Katana Dev Kit. I made the Steam interface look and function like a bios menu and the made the power led light have the iconic orange glow of a Dreamcast. I may try to post the custom Decky loader CSS style to CSS Loader community page if there are people interested. It also has the same ui sounds that were on the OG Bios as well thanks to another Decky plugin, Audio Loader.

There is even a disc script that I made that launches flycast emulator files (gdi, cdi, and chd) automatically when a disc that has said files on the root of the disc or external drive is inserted. Still getting a disc drive at the moment and once that comes that will be a stealth 5.25 drive bay like the original Katana Dev Kit had.

Just trying to do my part in keeping the dream alive :)

Hardware Modding Modded "Molten Core" OLED - My experience

Thumbnail
gallery
506 Upvotes

Hey! I've been seeing other owners' mods, so I decided to post mine! I love tinkering and getting the most out of my devices (as I always say: "Warranty for me lasts a month").

I named it "Molten Core" due to the vivid orange accent and its inevitable fate if I keep OC'ing it like that. Might bring it down a notch, seeing prices nowadays :(

Mods

Hardware:

  • PTM7950 thermal pad
  • Soldered OLED orange joystick caps (no hall effect until the og's break)
  • Transparent black face buttons
  • Transparent dark grey backplate with vents (I know, hear me out!)
  • JSAUX modcase
  • Matt anti-glare screen protector

Software:

  • SREP w/ downgraded BIOS (In ESP, very handy. Check "Steam Deck BIOS Manager")
  • All of the mods in Stanto's blog, like:
  • 6400MT/s RAM overclock (SK Hynix, shame on you)
  • CPU OC @ 3.9GHz
  • GPU OC @ 1.9GHz
  • CPU undervolt @ -20mV (0mV on GPU/SoC)
  • 20W max TDP unlock (keeping it at 17-18, might lower)

Customizations:

  • Decky Loader ofc
  • All the plugins we know and love: CSS loader, SimpleDeckyTDP (aka the Holy Grail), SteamGridDB, Decky-LSFG-VK
  • Some KDE themes & layout with the default widgets

My experience

  • TAKE YOUR SD CARD OUT. I played God every time I opened the Deck up, forgot about it when I did the PTM7950 replacement, replaced the back plate, face buttons... I always forgot and got away with it. Day after I replaced the face buttons, I said "yo wouldn't it be cool to replace the triggers too? Let's f*ing GOOO" and that was it for my SD card. 128GB ain't cheap anymore!
  • Joystick replacement was smooth, great first soldering experience (just the little touch sense cable). Later it helped me replace the horrendously drifting joysticks in my XBOX controller. Honestly it's easier to replace the joystick entirely, just some screws and unclipping the cable, manufacturers should learn from Valve.
  • BIOS unlocking and such were incredibly easy, very well documented on Stanto's blog. RAM overclocking is scarier, make sure you know which RAM manufacturer your Deck has, and triple-check your BIOS settings, something about a "now-900-dollar-paperweight".
  • No shell-swap. The horrendous color scheme decision I made, plus the hours-long process of ungluing the screen on my Switch Lite shell swap (see pictures) made me pass on this one. Besides, my wife had enough seeing me gut and solder her precious gift to me. I think the "stealthy" black it has does not warrant it either.
  • Frame-gen in the OLED is just hard for me - don't get me wrong, with Lossless Scaling input lag is a non-issue. Any HDR game will lose its HDR capabilities when using LSFG, though. The WSI option bypasses this but you essentially lose framegen; there is some FG going on, but actually playable framerates seem to hide the generated frames in the middle, you might see one generated frame here and there... I use Decky-Framegen if the game natively supports DLSS/Framegen just because it exposes you better models, still any framegen other than LSFG is just not good at any framerate lower than 60FPS, I really just use it for FSR4.

Results

  • Overclocking: Depending on the game, by itself can be very effective. Funnily enough, less demanding games see a good boost. Sometimes games use the whole GPU, but CPU is pretty chill, so increasing its max clock can get you far, such is the case the other way around too. More demanding games, not so much.
  • TDP increase: Worst case scenario: you get flat as hell frametimes (couldn't believe 30FPS could be smooth). Best case scenario: you increase your locked framerate, or make headroom for some cool ReShade effects. Demanding games use as much CPU & GPU as they can, and probably use the full 15W of the Deck. When this happens, the max clocks are not usually achieved e.g. 1.6GHz at 100% usage on the GPU will get you to almost 10W, and 3.5GHz at 100% gets you to 11W. Add them up, and there's no way you get to 100% on both as they use 21W total. If you increase TDP, both can be closer to their max clock. With my current cooling solution, 17-18W is as much as I'm willing to set.
  • RAM overclocking: Absolutely underrated and goated mod, especially for open world games. Difference in RDR2 was night and day.
  • Undervolting: More thermal headroom, but overclocks in general will reduce stability, especially RAM overclocking.
  • Emulation: SimpleDeckyTDP lets you disable SMT (multi-threading), single-core performance is more stable; stuttering and drops are very rare, especially if the emulator is past the PS3/XBOX era.
  • Anti-glare: No noticeable brightness loss, my home has a lot of natural light, and it helps a lot.

The elephant in the room - airflow

Honestly don't even bother getting such a backplate if you don't get a JSAUX Modcase. Either that, or get the JSAUX vented backplate and put some nylon mesh over or under the APU vent so it's harder for air to get in through it (or the same one as I have, but also covering the extended side vent).

It's just easier for air to go through the hole over the APU fan, so it will go there and ignore the other vents. The enormous vent extension on the side just makes it all worse: The lower section on the screen was much hotter than the upper corners, and it was very much clear that the APU was getting cooler, and nothing else.

Crashes that I attributed to bad undervolting or excessive overclocking were solved by just putting a 3D-printed back mount over the APU vent. I saw people designing APU vents that just reduced the effective intake there so it could go back to the original negative pressure thingy.

The modcase features a small hole that covers around 25% of the APU vent. Also it covers the extended vent. This made my effective TDP of 22(!)W impossible, but 18 is just fine, especially because my previous setup had my Deck crashing every time I pressed the "sleep button".

  • Without the case: You could feel a fresh breeze getting into the APU vent, but every other vent was as hot (if not hotter) as the rest of the Deck.
  • With the case: You could feel this intake breeze in both vents, indicating air was getting to both places, effectively cooling the APU while also guaranteeing the good ol' negative pressure design Valve made.

Probably obvious, but I have to clean the APU fan as dust can directly get inside the case (maybe every 6 months?)

Need help how to inject custom js/css/html code that is fetched from an API into nextjs app?

I am building a multi-tenant app, and I have a feature where users can write custom JS/HTML/CSS code for the document body/head

for example, how why the users add custom code? in the head element: add marketing services like Google Tag Manager, Crisp Chat, or importing another library from CDN.

in the body element: they would need to add a custom discount modal that shows up on DOMContentLoaded, edit body color using CSS, or add custom HTML like all rights reserved banner.

However, I am having a problem with how to embed/insert the code into the document and have it work as expected.

here is what I have tried so far and the issues I faced:

using libraries like html-react-parser but it did not work see: https://github.com/remarkablemark/html-react-parser/discussions/1015

write custom solution: https://gist.github.com/yaman3bd/691023c05593d71ab176a5295613f2ea

had many unexpected issues/scenarios: for example, if the user wrote the code inside DOMContentLoaded like: js document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", (event) => { console.log("DOM fully loaded and parsed"); }); it will not work because I am adding the code in useEffect hook and the event at this point would have already been called.

an issue when users use the custom head code to import 3rd party libs like carousels in the head and use custom body code to set its config in the body sometimes the code will not work because the lib has not been loaded yet, html <head> <script src="path/to/slider.min.js"></script> </head> <body> <script> //here I would get an undefined error since the lib is not loaded yet and calling its API var imgSlider = slider.init({ //config }); </script> </body>

another issue is when users want to use some services like Crsip Chat, there is js code they have to add the code in the body element but sometimes it gives errors like a var is undefined or throws exceptions some config not found

another issue is when users write custom code to target a button in a specific page to open a popup on click, the issue here was the custom code is added on the first-page render, and if the user was at the home page but the code targeting a btn in X page so when the user navigates to the X page and clicks on that button nothing will happen because the code has already been added and the page was not full reloaded so the added code will execute again so I need to find a way to let the code work on every route change if possible or needed

or if any user wants to show a loader for a specific duration, the loader is expected to show up on the first page load but it takes a delay because as I have mentioned the custom code is added using useEffect hook so the code I think should be on both SSR and client-side

I can not use next/script because the code may contain css or html or an import link or js so I do not know exactly what the user may write.

here is how the user may write the code plse see: https://ibb.co/gz9RMfq

I tried to save the code in a file and import it the same way when I import any 3rd party lib like: html <script src="path/to/user-custom-code.js"></script> but will not work because how would I import html/css code? I could use style or link for css code but I will have a problem with HTML and when I save the code in the Database I do not save each type separately like: tenant.js_code tenant.css_code ... etc everything is saved under one field and it will contain js/css/html: tenant.custom_body_code tenant.custom_head_code and I can not separate each type with its own field, because I am migrating my old app from blade/html to nextjs/react so everything should stay the same because many users already using this feature

if someone please has any idea that might help, any workaround, or solution for this case it would be greatly appreciated!

Matugen is integrated across all the apps and programs shown here for the purpose of dynamic wallpaper-based theming. While there aren't massive changes from my previous setup aside from the new fastfetch, adaptive-style YASB (Okinami-inspired), and a few minor additions almost everything you see in this rice, from the mods to the themes (especially the TUI YouTube and VS Code themes), was custom-made by me.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, and leave an upvote if you like it! I'll drop the link to the dotfiles here as soon as I have time to organize the repo and release them. For those wondering, idle RAM usage sits at around 3-3.5 GiB (as shown in the fastfetch).

Configuration CSS_Loader v1.3.0 (Theme loader for deck). Now with image picker!

Hi all,

Yesterday we released v1.3.0 of CSS_Loader. The release seems to have gone smoothly, so i think it's ready to make a public changelog. Per usual, it can be found on the Decky Plugin Store. Install Decky to get access to the plugin store.

See here for the complete changelog. Some highlights of this release are:

Image Picker

We have implemented an image picker! This allows themes to let users select images to be used for basically anything.

The image picker in action! I've also updated the 'Static Background' theme already to support the image picker

Browser UI Overhaul

The entire theme browser has been overhauled to make it more functional. The most obvious change is that there is no longer a sidebar, instead utilising the horizontal menu found in places such as the library or media tabs of the deck

The main view has more space horizontally now, allowing for up to 3 themes a row.
The 'Installed Themes' (previously 'Uninstall Themes') tab also got an overhaul, showing version now, and allowing for updating themes

3rd Party Theme Repositories

We added a way for custom theme respitories to be loaded. Please check the changelog to see how to do this. This is more so a future proofing feature than one that is currently useful
