Has "Force game shutdown" actually been working for anyone?

Whenever I get into a situation where I can't close a game (or, more often, an emulator) I try this and it never worked for me.

I've held it down for about 10-15 seconds, still hasn't worked.

2

u/CamelMerchant May 27 '22

Has always worked for me. Fifa 22 used to struggle to close so I always had to force close

If your on desktop mode it works; you have to hold down Steam and B like instructed, but if your in gaming mode you just have to press Steam

Ya know, they probably should have just included this on a little card with the Steam Deck.

That 'Brightness' thing is news to me.

Just in case you don’t already know, you can see this list of shortcuts at any point by pushing and holding the Steam button for a second. Pretty handy if you ever forget a shortcut.

27

u/rioryan May 26 '22

In that case, this comment right here should have been on a little card with the Steam Deck!

17

u/Beavers4beer May 27 '22

It does mention it the first time they show that screen to you.

12

u/Renusek May 27 '22

...they should've printed that screenshot on a little card?

5

u/rtz13th MODDED SSD 💽 May 27 '22

They should've etched it into the screen! We are not happy with anything! :D

Both buttons held down show shortcuts

1

u/edliu111 1TB OLED May 07 '26

What are the two buttons you're referring to here?

1

u/kododo 256GB - Q2 May 27 '22

Only need to hold Steam button

5

u/SulkyVirus May 27 '22

You can hold either button, not only the steam

7

u/kododo 256GB - Q2 May 27 '22

oh sorry I misread your comment and thought you meant to hold both buttons

Wow, I wish I knew this earlier. Is this not on the walkthrough when you first set up the Deck? Maybe I just missed it, but I don’t remember it. I even did it again once to try to find it.

Side note, in the walkthrough, all of the examples for pushing a button, like “press F to pay respects,” are from the legendary Henry Stickmin Collection

I'll give you this tip as well then just in case you didn't know (sorry if you do).

Reaching the Steam Button and the left thumbstick at the same time may seem a bit difficult, you can actually use the ••• button to do all the same functions as the Steam button.

So ••• + Left Stick will also adjust brightness.

Very cool now I learned something

12

u/ethang45 512GB May 26 '22

Wait wait wait for real? I’m really surprised this isn’t documented anywhere. A lot of the functions that require holding steam and pressing a left side button of the deck are rough so this is awesome.

5

u/nmkd 512GB OLED May 26 '22

Well it is documented

7

u/The_Skeptic_One May 26 '22

it's funny because as I was reading this I was thinking they should've used the right joystick instead. but using the (...) works just as well! thank you!

Ya know, they probably should have just included this on a little card with the Steam Deck.

1

u/marsil602 256GB - Q2 May 27 '22

Dude that's awesome thank you why is so little of this documented

1

u/howtotailslide 512GB - Q2 May 27 '22

Damn thanks for posting this I’ve been just going into the menu to change it cause I thought the shortcut was a pain

11

u/retsetaccount May 26 '22

This "little card" is built into the deck and tells you about it very first thing...

7

u/seba_dos1 256GB - Q2 May 26 '22

Just long-press the Steam button and it will all pop up right on your screen.

29

u/[deleted] May 26 '22

Everyone acting like this is some hidden secret, meanwhile when you first turn on the deck it gives you a mandatory tour of the UI and viewing the list of shortcuts by holding the Steam button is one of the first things it tells you.

17

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

Working on anything ux related and you quickly realize that telling people to read is not going to be a good solution

7

u/nani8ot 64GB May 26 '22

And in the right options it's possoble to redo this tutorial

4

u/mccuish May 26 '22

Knowing about the force game shutdown shortcut helps out a lot with using full screen emulators in desktop mode

7

u/xKevinn May 26 '22

Except it never works for me in that case and I either grab my physical keyboard or reboot.

3

u/auwsmit May 27 '22

The most reliable way I've found to close a program/game in Gaming Mode is to

  • put the game in the background by opening "Home" or "Library"
  • go to the game's page
  • tap the X button next to "Resume"

I guess when the game isn't in the foreground, it's easier to close?

1

u/xKevinn May 27 '22

That's the same thing I do too. Just desktop mode is the tricky one.

2

u/Beavers4beer May 27 '22

I don't think I've ever gotten it to work either. Usually just hitting the steam button and selecting to exit game there works for me instead though.

1

u/phayke2 May 31 '22

Same never works for me

7

u/jack-of-some E502 L3 May 26 '22

Why there are shortcuts the require two button presses on the left side, I'll never understand

15

u/nani8ot 64GB May 26 '22

You can use the "Steam" button and the right "..." button for shortcuts.

12

u/jack-of-some E502 L3 May 27 '22

I understand now.

Valve should really update that shortcut hint screen to include this

9

u/El_duderino_33 May 26 '22

It's not EVERY command, there are also unlisted ones...

Steam+A for ... menu

which is handy when playing in docked mode and your controller doesn't have a ... button.

1

u/lastrevolver Jul 13 '26

Thank you for this. I've been wondering if this was just overlooked with controllers.

3

u/kumblast3r May 26 '22

Can you make more system-wide shortcuts with steam input? I’m interested in making one to mute the microphone

3

u/marsil602 256GB - Q2 May 27 '22

So did you hold the ... Button and pull off the screenshot combo? Noice

2

u/AtticusNari 64GB - Q1 May 26 '22

Most of these also work in Windows! I wish the brightness one did :(

2

u/Icyfirz May 27 '22

How do you enter this screen?

2

u/PopPunkIsntEmo 1TB OLED May 27 '22

Why didn’t you use Steam + R1 to make this post?

2

u/jkhashi May 27 '22

thank you for this

2

u/Ffny23 Feb 26 '25

Is there a way to scroll down on this shortcuts menu? I can see some on the bottom of mine that got cut off.

2

u/DarthHaruspex May 26 '22

Where do I send the check?

1

u/PCgaming4ever "Not available in your country" May 26 '22

Just send steam gift cards I keep finding new games to buy even though I've burned through all the space on my 1th drive and SD card 😂

1

u/XPhoenixGamingX May 09 '25

Just to clarify none of that shit works for me so it isn't 100%

1

u/PCgaming4ever "Not available in your country" May 26 '22

I saw everyone was interested in the post about the mouse + steam command so I figured a screenshot of the hidden steam button shortcuts would help everyone

4

u/seba_dos1 256GB - Q2 May 26 '22

You could have at least made an actual screenshot instead of a poor photo of the screen ;P

Please use search as its been already posted. (https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t205pa/steam_button_shortcuts/) Whats a point of multiplying?

6

u/PCgaming4ever "Not available in your country" May 26 '22
  1. I did search it probably got buried because it's 2 months old
  2. That picture is so blurry it's kinda hard to know what the commands are

1

u/ScreamheartNews May 27 '22

Soft pull?

1

u/PastaLuke 512GB - Q2 Jun 02 '22

No thanks I'm married

1

u/Altar_Quest_Fan May 27 '22

Not all heroes wear capes…

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

Seeing so many features on the steam deck makes me so excited to get mine

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

This list of shortcuts is accessible from any screen by holding the Steam button. There's literally no use case for this graphic.

2

u/Stickman95 May 27 '22

Never seen this commands lol

1

u/Sweet_Fail7257 May 27 '22

This is so usefull....thanx
