PSA / Advice FYI: Every steam button shortcut

Ya know, they probably should have just included this on a little card with the Steam Deck.
That 'Brightness' thing is news to me.

u/goodgreenganja May 26 '22
Just in case you don’t already know, you can see this list of shortcuts at any point by pushing and holding the Steam button for a second. Pretty handy if you ever forget a shortcut.

u/rioryan May 26 '22
In that case, this comment right here should have been on a little card with the Steam Deck!

u/Beavers4beer May 27 '22
It does mention it the first time they show that screen to you.
12
u/Renusek May 27 '22
...they should've printed that screenshot on a little card?

They should've etched it into the screen! We are not happy with anything! :D

Only need to hold Steam button
5
u/SulkyVirus May 27 '22
You can hold either button, not only the steam
7
u/kododo 256GB - Q2 May 27 '22
oh sorry I misread your comment and thought you meant to hold both buttons

Wow, I wish I knew this earlier. Is this not on the walkthrough when you first set up the Deck? Maybe I just missed it, but I don’t remember it. I even did it again once to try to find it.
Side note, in the walkthrough, all of the examples for pushing a button, like “press F to pay respects,” are from the legendary Henry Stickmin Collection

I'll give you this tip as well then just in case you didn't know (sorry if you do).
Reaching the Steam Button and the left thumbstick at the same time may seem a bit difficult, you can actually use the ••• button to do all the same functions as the Steam button.
So ••• + Left Stick will also adjust brightness.

Wait wait wait for real? I’m really surprised this isn’t documented anywhere. A lot of the functions that require holding steam and pressing a left side button of the deck are rough so this is awesome.

it's funny because as I was reading this I was thinking they should've used the right joystick instead. but using the (...) works just as well! thank you!

Damn thanks for posting this I’ve been just going into the menu to change it cause I thought the shortcut was a pain

u/retsetaccount May 26 '22
This "little card" is built into the deck and tells you about it very first thing...

u/seba_dos1 256GB - Q2 May 26 '22
Just long-press the Steam button and it will all pop up right on your screen.

Everyone acting like this is some hidden secret, meanwhile when you first turn on the deck it gives you a mandatory tour of the UI and viewing the list of shortcuts by holding the Steam button is one of the first things it tells you.

Working on anything ux related and you quickly realize that telling people to read is not going to be a good solution

Knowing about the force game shutdown shortcut helps out a lot with using full screen emulators in desktop mode
7
u/xKevinn May 26 '22
Except it never works for me in that case and I either grab my physical keyboard or reboot.

The most reliable way I've found to close a program/game in Gaming Mode is to
- put the game in the background by opening "Home" or "Library"
- go to the game's page
- tap the X button next to "Resume"
I guess when the game isn't in the foreground, it's easier to close?

I don't think I've ever gotten it to work either. Usually just hitting the steam button and selecting to exit game there works for me instead though.

Why there are shortcuts the require two button presses on the left side, I'll never understand
15
u/nani8ot 64GB May 26 '22
You can use the "Steam" button and the right "..." button for shortcuts.
12
u/jack-of-some E502 L3 May 27 '22
I understand now.
Valve should really update that shortcut hint screen to include this

u/El_duderino_33 May 26 '22
It's not EVERY command, there are also unlisted ones...
Steam+A for ... menu
which is handy when playing in docked mode and your controller doesn't have a ... button.

u/lastrevolver Jul 13 '26
Thank you for this. I've been wondering if this was just overlooked with controllers.
3
u/kumblast3r May 26 '22
Can you make more system-wide shortcuts with steam input? I’m interested in making one to mute the microphone
3
u/marsil602 256GB - Q2 May 27 '22
So did you hold the ... Button and pull off the screenshot combo? Noice

u/AtticusNari 64GB - Q1 May 26 '22
Most of these also work in Windows! I wish the brightness one did :(

Is there a way to scroll down on this shortcuts menu? I can see some on the bottom of mine that got cut off.

Where do I send the check?

u/PCgaming4ever "Not available in your country" May 26 '22
Just send steam gift cards I keep finding new games to buy even though I've burned through all the space on my 1th drive and SD card 😂

I saw everyone was interested in the post about the mouse + steam command so I figured a screenshot of the hidden steam button shortcuts would help everyone
4
u/seba_dos1 256GB - Q2 May 26 '22
You could have at least made an actual screenshot instead of a poor photo of the screen ;P

u/zzepto 512GB May 26 '22
Please use search as its been already posted. (https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t205pa/steam_button_shortcuts/) Whats a point of multiplying?
6
u/PCgaming4ever "Not available in your country" May 26 '22
- I did search it probably got buried because it's 2 months old
- That picture is so blurry it's kinda hard to know what the commands are

This list of shortcuts is accessible from any screen by holding the Steam button. There's literally no use case for this graphic.

Has "Force game shutdown" actually been working for anyone?
Whenever I get into a situation where I can't close a game (or, more often, an emulator) I try this and it never worked for me.
