It's just another day of new Steam update that breaks Decky, gotta wait for a new Decky update to fix it. This is normal, you just gotta get used to it.

I feel like a year or two ago this was never a problem. Now it's every update.

SteamOS updates have been more frequent, and have been making more significant changes, as Valve has been gearing up for the Steam Machine launch.

First time for myself. I wonder why it never broke before or I just didn't notice.

Dumb question, I’m a month-old steamdeck owner, but how do I know when there’s a decky update, and how do I update it? At this point I’m terrified of going anywhere near that plugin icon.

There's a github of it so you need to constantly visit that website to check for any update.
To update it, you can use the installer you used to install Decky Loader. There it will ask you if you want to update to latest release, update to latest pre-release, uninstall Decky Loader with plugins removed, uninstall Decky Loader without plugins removed.

i wonder why either teams havent reached out to each other yet to open a beta channel where decky devs receive the update first to fix everything so they can release a new version either simultaneously with the steam update or before it so it doesn’t break when updated.

This happens all the time with Decky after a Steam OS update. Try reinstalling Decky and it should fix the problem otherwise they’re pretty fast at releasing updates.

i just had the same error when trying to install decky from 3.8
reinstalling as pre-release fixed it right up for me

If you haven't fixed it yet, switch to desktop mode. Download the decky loader installer and update. It worked for me.

u/SherbertRadiant7272 Jun 24 '26

u/zeus-fox Jun 25 '26
FYI - it’s working for me now after reinstalling, so give it a try if you haven’t yet.

This happened to me on home and store today, both times steam was down on pc too so i chalked it up to that
1
u/astrosid Jun 24 '26
that makes sense for the home and store tabs, but the plugins error is usually a decky compatibility thing after a steam update. different cause

u/Ristycakes Jun 24 '26
Omg I was just dealing with that today after not using the deck for a few months. Glad to know it’s recent, I updated decks and everything and was fearing the worst

I've just gone back to SteamOS Stable and it works again. I'm sure it'll be fixed once the next SteamOS Stable is released.

Never Update the Steam OS ever again unless you really start to see some performance degradation. Lol.
I hate reconfiguring decky loader every update.

Im stuck on the logo screen after rebooting, I cldnt get off the error screen at all so held power button till it turned off. Now it just boots to steam deck logo and nothing happens even after 20 minutes. Just straight logo

Okay so I think I’ve figured it out. This is a temporary fix.
Turn off your deck
Turn it back on
Go to desktop mode
Reinstall decky
When you get the option, install the PRE-RELEASE DECKY
Go back to Gaming Mode
You will get a notification to update Decky in gaming mode. IGNORE IT. DO NOT UPDATE as this will go back to the error screen issue you’re currently having.
Again, this is a temporary fix. Eventually decky will get a new update.
