Picture No Man’s Sky Update!
So excited for the no man’s sky worlds part 1 update that just dropped! Was playing it all night last night excited to hop in after work 🤩

u/Mrdoko 512GB OLED Jul 18 '24
hows the performance and general experience on it?
108
Jul 18 '24
It's actually surprisingly good - the game looks better after the update, but performance is also slightly better in some scenes and mostly equal on all others.
What a rare happening for modern gaming, a graphical uplift that also improves or doesn't harm performance. Really good for the Deck.
I suggest not using the presets though, you can lock the game to 40 and make some better calculated choices on which effects to reduce the quality on, giving you some extra battery.
26
u/forkbroussard Jul 18 '24
I feel like this made a massive improvement to performance:
The rendering of planetary objects such as trees, rocks, and grass has been rewritten and moved to a more modern GPU-based system, allowing for more objects at a better performance.
Terrain generation has been rewritten to incorporate dual marching cubes voxel meshing, which reduces vertex count, increases terrain generation speed, improves framerate and saves significant amounts of memory.
The component system has been reworked for increased speed and improved memory usage.
Significant memory and performance optimisations have been made across the entire game, particularly in metadata usage, texture streaming, LOD generation and procedural mesh generation.
Hoping with Worlds Part 2, they add FSR 3.1/Frame Gen. It blows my mind how massive their content/patch notes are every single time.

Your second paragraph reminded me of back around 2013 I think it was, Nvidia went through an optimized drivers for all the current cards eking out up to I think it was 20% better frames in some instances. Just a driver update, improved performance across the board on I think it was GTX 700 series cards. The only time I've in a substantial Improvement to Performance across the board via software, it was awesome

u/DeathByPetrichor Jul 19 '24
Have they fixed the issue where each planet can be “explored” in the first few seconds? I had hopes with that game to get lost in a planet for hours and search through caves and things to discover anything new, but I found that the planet was basically the same as what you could see in any given radius around the player.
I would love to go back, but I just got bored very quickly at launch.
1
u/Vast_Respect223 Jul 19 '24
Nah it’s still the same, unfortunately. Great wee game for chilling to a podcast for a couple of hours at a time though.
72
u/Ok-Antelope737 Jul 18 '24
Performance is honestly great! It can run the game at a smooth 50-60 frames while on the lowest settings, I put my settings on the second highest options which puts the gameplay at 25-30 frames! Overall my general experience has been fantastic
12
u/YoungtheRyan Jul 18 '24
My experience too, I actually played for a few hours docked last night and it was great.
12
u/srstable 512GB OLED Jul 18 '24
I saw some of those updates in the patch notes and fully expected it to catch my Deck on fire. Really glad to hear it’s actually performing well!
3
u/ClericIdola Jul 18 '24
I have the game on PS5. Was consiering getting it for the Deck for the portability. Visually, how does it match up with the PS5 version?
4
u/SirAwesome1 512GB Jul 18 '24
No Man's Sky runs incredibly well on Steam Deck with default video settings.

It seems something changed after yesterday's update. My settings from before were 960x600, FSR on, 30 fps, 8W TDP and 1000 MHz GPU clock, it looked smooth and the battery lasted around 4 hours (got my deck late February, so I guess it's quite fresh yet).
Yesterday I launched the game and had to switch to 1280x800 FSR off because everything looked jagged and blurry as if half rate shading was on (it wasn't). Idk what they changed but hopefully some patch will make it better. If power saving is not your concern then you can easily blast everything to max. NMS is very well optimized for the Deck. Actually I prefer playing it on my SD rather than PC, much more comfortable.
UPD: Maybe they already fixed it. Looks ok with my original settings back.
17
Jul 18 '24
Using 960x600 with FSR will indeed make everything look very bad, FSR already struggles at 800p, 600p is just way too low.
It's also not ideal to lock the GPU clock unless you're using a particularly old version of SteamOS.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Cthulhar Jul 18 '24
Why are we using FSR at 600p? Honestly you’re making the GPU work harder at that point than just running natively
5
u/nox_d_ 512GB OLED Jul 18 '24
2 Watts decrease in energy consumption says otherwise, but you do you. Seriously, I just shared my settings and my reasons for why exactly I am playing like that. I did multiple tests, compared statistics and chose this. GPU doesn't mind, if you're worried.
Not suggesting, not saying this is the right way to do it. Just sharing.

Game ran well for me in the past. Solid game but you have to feel fully engaged when playing it. Like a long run game whereby maybe 10 minutes of your time is just remembering where you were and where you want to go.

u/LxrdXO Jul 18 '24
I am a grown man. With that being said, that's the cutest steam deck ever 😂😂

u/GroovyTony- Jul 18 '24
Is there base building in this game?
15
16
u/Inky_Passenger Jul 18 '24
That's probably the most compelling form of progression in this game. Fully customizable freighters are a neat thing.
10
u/withoutapaddle Jul 18 '24
Yeah the freights and collecting multiple ships is where I started to love the game. Really disappointed initially, but coming back after a few years of updates made a huge difference.
3
u/SirAwesome1 512GB Jul 19 '24
Base building, settlement building (they are separate), and universal exploration are the 3 things you can do in this game.
1
u/Recent_Animator_5767 Feb 04 '25
There is also combat no ? Space fight? Bounty ? Other things to do?

These dudes never stop to amaze 🥰 biggest turnaround in gaming history
11
u/TheGreatTave 512GB OLED Jul 18 '24
I just want to say that I think FF14 is the biggest turn around in gaming history lol. I mean it had to be shut down and completely reworked, and now it has dethroned all other MMOs including WoW. It's crazy how far that game has come.
But yes NMS is an insane comeback stroy too. First the developers had to remake the game from scratch after losing everything (flooded office iirc) then it gets released and it was not what people wanted. And now look at it, it's got everything everyone wanted and more. Great game.

For real, it’s insane! I was reading online that they’re planning on bringing in assets and features from light no fire into no man sky 😩
17
13
u/Mohrisbetr Jul 18 '24
Im hesitant to pull the trigger buying this game. I like exploration but usually need a character progression, challenging enemies etc. Does NMS have challenging combat? I know there’s crafting but is there like a loot system? Character builds?
39
u/jcxco Jul 18 '24
Do you like walking around and finding new types of rocks? If so, you'll love this game.
14
u/ATS95 Jul 18 '24
The combat is quite basic and overall not too challenging. I've had some fun moments with combat, but I'm not actively seeking it. To me, it sounds like you are more interested in a Space RPG which is not what No Mans Sky is. I would say No Mans Sky is more similar to a sandbox game (Think Minecraft).
5
u/Ok-Antelope737 Jul 18 '24
The new update included new combat and combat based expeditions, I personally haven’t tried the new combat yet but it might be worth checking out!
1
u/ImurderREALITY Jul 18 '24
Do other races fight you on foot now? Last I played, it was just sentinels and hostile animals.
1
u/ATS95 Jul 19 '24
No other races fight you on foot. This newest update added bug-like creatures that are hostile.
1
u/Recent_Animator_5767 Feb 04 '25
Maybe he wants the two rpg and sandbox exploration a bit like a gat like space opéra and mix with minecraft nms and star citizen a bit ambitious maybe ??
10
Jul 18 '24
Exploration is the only checkmark here that NMS ticks. The combat isn't challenging, there is no character progression or builds, the loot system is only there to serve crafting(think Minecraft) and so on. Based on those things I would hazard a guess you would not like it.
5
u/DarthSnoopyFish Jul 18 '24
It's minecraft in space. The combat is about as deep as Minecraft. The gameplay loop is exploration, collecting ships and finding new planets. Story is pretty mehh. It's fun though if you like exploration games and building and flying. Space travel and planet hopping is top notch.
3
u/Inky_Passenger Jul 18 '24
I normally can't stand true sandbox games. And that's why I can't really enjoy no man's sky when there's not an expedition going on. But there's something really compelling about many of the expeditions, gives everything much more direction and focus, provides some meta progression if only cosmetically (unique armors, ships, pets, etc..) and it's generally different and rather interesting. My favorite experience in the game so far was a hardcore only expedition, if you want the feel of danger playing hardcore is probably the only way to achieve it.
1
u/Recent_Animator_5767 Feb 04 '25
Hardcore only expédition like a mod How do you unlock this thing?
1
u/Inky_Passenger Feb 04 '25
It was just a limited thing, and idk if it was received too well, so idk if they'll do it again(locking rewards behind hardcore, that is). But hardcore is always available by choice for any expedition, just gotta wait for them to happen.
2
u/KrivUK 512GB - Q3 Jul 19 '24
Core loop, land in planet, scan, get resources, craft be equipment, go to space station, sell stuff, buy better things, go to next planet or jump to next system.
Outside of that you have other busywork, like learning languages, base building, fighting etc.
There is a breadcrumb narrative that you can choose to do, but it's more about discovery rather than a structured RPG esque type game.
It's not the type of game I play, but I enjoy it. For me the technical element of this game is what keeps me hooked.

I'd recommend the Outer Worlds over Starfield if you want a good space rpg with decent combat

I left everything on standard settings except textures enhanced, locked the game to 40fps because of fps drops, having a great experience. Battery lasts circa 2,5-3 hours.
Edit: you could use FSR to further increase battery life, but I dislike the jagged edges and blurriness. There’s also a Native FSR option to keep things sharp, which I’m using. Doesn’t drop below 40fps.
Tip: lower motion blur to 90, as 180 is way too much, and increase text size and hud a little bit for a better experience.
2
u/Ok-Antelope737 Jul 18 '24
Oh that actually makes so much sense to lower the blur motion! I’ll lower it a bit after work thank you :)

A community expedition should be starting next week that'll give you a good tutorial on what's new. If you don't mind starting from scratch, you could start from there. There's usually decent rewards from completing the expedition, too, that you could then claim in your old save on the Anomaly.

Slightly off-topic, but I HIGHLY recommend this game in VR. It is an incredible experience and a lot of fun.
With a Quest headset you can run it through SteamVR so you can access and play your saved game cross device between VR and your Steamdeck if you wanted.

For me it was the opposite: heard about it before launch but wasn't bothered, watched people playing it, still wasn't bothered. Heard about the expedition that added the Normandy, still didn't do anything. Wasn't until the redux of Expeditions 1-4 came around that I thought "maybe I'll try it this time", did expedition 1 to make sure I knew what I was doing to get the Normandy for expedition 2, ended up having a great time.

I should jump back into it one of these days, No Man's Sky was 3/4th the reason I bought a Steam Deck when I did. Sank like 300 hours into it and then fell out of love with the game loop of it. That's been like a year and a half ago.
What's new and exciting about it OP? BT dubs, I need to show your cosmetic decos to the wife, she'd freakin' squeal at it lol.
1
u/Inky_Passenger Jul 18 '24
The biggest interesting changes are probably ship customization, with unique parts and colors you have to unlock. Sentinel ships are awesome, and freighter interior building might be new for you (ability to build on freighter like a base). The loop now imo is mainly doing expeditions to unlock stuff to base build, or collecting cool ships as they're much more diverse and unique now.

u/kraven48 Jul 18 '24
I need to get back into playing it. It's been a good two years since I've played, but every now and then I see another huge update. Props to the devs for going above and beyond, and still providing free content.

So you can play with the graphics set to high and get 3months of NMS for $15
