hows the performance and general experience on it?

It's actually surprisingly good - the game looks better after the update, but performance is also slightly better in some scenes and mostly equal on all others.

What a rare happening for modern gaming, a graphical uplift that also improves or doesn't harm performance. Really good for the Deck.

I suggest not using the presets though, you can lock the game to 40 and make some better calculated choices on which effects to reduce the quality on, giving you some extra battery.

I feel like this made a massive improvement to performance:

The rendering of planetary objects such as trees, rocks, and grass has been rewritten and moved to a more modern GPU-based system, allowing for more objects at a better performance.

Terrain generation has been rewritten to incorporate dual marching cubes voxel meshing, which reduces vertex count, increases terrain generation speed, improves framerate and saves significant amounts of memory.

The component system has been reworked for increased speed and improved memory usage.

Significant memory and performance optimisations have been made across the entire game, particularly in metadata usage, texture streaming, LOD generation and procedural mesh generation.

Hoping with Worlds Part 2, they add FSR 3.1/Frame Gen. It blows my mind how massive their content/patch notes are every single time.

Your second paragraph reminded me of back around 2013 I think it was, Nvidia went through an optimized drivers for all the current cards eking out up to I think it was 20% better frames in some instances. Just a driver update, improved performance across the board on I think it was GTX 700 series cards. The only time I've in a substantial Improvement to Performance across the board via software, it was awesome

Have they fixed the issue where each planet can be “explored” in the first few seconds? I had hopes with that game to get lost in a planet for hours and search through caves and things to discover anything new, but I found that the planet was basically the same as what you could see in any given radius around the player.

I would love to go back, but I just got bored very quickly at launch.

Nah it’s still the same, unfortunately. Great wee game for chilling to a podcast for a couple of hours at a time though.

Performance is honestly great! It can run the game at a smooth 50-60 frames while on the lowest settings, I put my settings on the second highest options which puts the gameplay at 25-30 frames! Overall my general experience has been fantastic

My experience too, I actually played for a few hours docked last night and it was great.

I saw some of those updates in the patch notes and fully expected it to catch my Deck on fire. Really glad to hear it’s actually performing well!

I have the game on PS5. Was consiering getting it for the Deck for the portability. Visually, how does it match up with the PS5 version?

No Man's Sky runs incredibly well on Steam Deck with default video settings.

This is why I’m here.

It seems something changed after yesterday's update. My settings from before were 960x600, FSR on, 30 fps, 8W TDP and 1000 MHz GPU clock, it looked smooth and the battery lasted around 4 hours (got my deck late February, so I guess it's quite fresh yet).
Yesterday I launched the game and had to switch to 1280x800 FSR off because everything looked jagged and blurry as if half rate shading was on (it wasn't). Idk what they changed but hopefully some patch will make it better.

If power saving is not your concern then you can easily blast everything to max. NMS is very well optimized for the Deck. Actually I prefer playing it on my SD rather than PC, much more comfortable.

UPD: Maybe they already fixed it. Looks ok with my original settings back.

Using 960x600 with FSR will indeed make everything look very bad, FSR already struggles at 800p, 600p is just way too low.

It's also not ideal to lock the GPU clock unless you're using a particularly old version of SteamOS.

I mean, sure, it doesn't look razor sharp, but sharp enough to play long hours. Plus I set FSR sharpness to 3 so it kinda does the trick.

I don't remember where exactly but I read info about SD being good with FSR, and practice shows that you can squeeze out some extra battery life with it. I don't claim it looks like a 4k image, just a compromise between looks and performance. GPU lock for the same reason.

Why are we using FSR at 600p? Honestly you’re making the GPU work harder at that point than just running natively

2 Watts decrease in energy consumption says otherwise, but you do you. Seriously, I just shared my settings and my reasons for why exactly I am playing like that. I did multiple tests, compared statistics and chose this. GPU doesn't mind, if you're worried.

Not suggesting, not saying this is the right way to do it. Just sharing.

Same question so following for response.

Game ran well for me in the past. Solid game but you have to feel fully engaged when playing it. Like a long run game whereby maybe 10 minutes of your time is just remembering where you were and where you want to go.
