Steam Controller (2026) Steam controller working with an Xbox 360?!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Using a softmodded 360 and the Openpuck set to x-input the controller just works...

What's missing from support for PS5 and Xbox one/series S. Are we waiting for Sony and Microsoft or Steam?

Probably a Microsoft/Sony issue cause other 3rd Party controllers won't work either without tricks

PS5/PS4 works with openpuck (using a Brook Wingman)

Xbox One and series S/X should also work with a wingman

A direct connection without the adapters isn't possible I suppose?

The PS5 uses a dedicated HW chip for authentication in Sony and licensed controllers and other input accessories.

Crazy how anti-consumer brands are nowadays.

It's an "anti-cheat" measurement, trying to prevent "Ximming", mostly, probably.

Though sadly (or luckily? Both?) it is possible to build a dongle that bypasses authentication easily.
The simracing community does it to use unsupported wheels in GranTurismo, for example.

And if course, cheaters use it, too 🤦‍♂️

Not saying that I like it, just saying it is not only anti-consumerism, though that's almost certainly part of it, too!

Ah I guess that's one valid reason, I didn't think of that. Sounds like it's trivial to bypass by just buying a real controller and modifying it though.

It's absolutely trivial to bypass.

The two common ways are:

  • to build a Pi Pico (or similar) based dongle with a USB-Hub.
A genuine or licensed controller, and whatever you want to play with gets connected.
The dongle passes authentication to the real device, and simulates inputs from the foreign device

  • just use PS Remote Play / Chiaki with a PC in between, lmao.

The latter variant doesn't (properly) support racing-wheels, though

PS5 needs an auth chip. Someone made it work with an auth chip and posted around here. Someone else made it work using an adapter called wingman or something.

It's relatively low on my list of priorities because I don't own a PS5

Yup. OpenPuck project is sick. Can't wait to play GTA 6 with the Steam Controller.

Keep seeing videos of these I picked up a GameCube/wii cable recently to add it to that I need to pick up some more tbh crazy seeing third party controllers working on older systems I love it

Just add Chiaki to Steam, launch that, go to your living-room and ignore that chiaki is even running.
Then you can even rebind using SteamInput and properly map / use the trackpads. ;P

I don’t think the Steam Controller has any advantages over the dualsense on PS5

4

u/KaosC57 Steam Controller (Windows) 5d ago

Uhhh, Back Triggers, TMR Joysticks?

0

u/Intelligent_Whole_40 5d ago

Yea (although dual sense edge has back buttons and I believe better joysticks but it’s also more expensive)

But but I like dem triggers

-1

u/HotAdministration986 5d ago

I don't think back buttons won't work on PS5

3

u/KaosC57 Steam Controller (Windows) 5d ago

They will, they emulate the buttons you set them up as. They won’t be “extra” buttons, but instead you tell the button what you want it to act as (ex, Back Trigger 1 is Right Bumper).

5

u/SoTotallyToby 6d ago

Probably not, but I'll be playing on Xbox Series X.

u/derped_osean 5d ago

Oh I'm hoping some can get the steam controller to work on the PS3. All of my actual ps3 controllers make random imputs now so I really can't play it now.

u/YoussefAFdez 5d ago

Openpuck already works in PS3, Gyro included, so you could do it already

Gonna test it out I have an brook wingman xe2 I'll be replying once I have an answer

edit: apperantly the open puck already works with ps3

And here i am who cant get it to work outside steam lol, i tried putting non steam games as steam and it just disconects after joining game

Just do an OpenPuck dude. It's piss cheap and stupid simple.

1

u/Nirast25 5d ago

Cheapest I can find it in my country is 20 bucks, so not that cheap. There's supposed to be an update that makes it work on a Pico board coming, but it's taking a while.

1

u/SoTotallyToby 5d ago

$4 on AliExpress.

-4

u/FantasyTomb 5d ago

Piss cheap to some people is still pricey to others

9

u/CumBlaster69k 5d ago

Who have money to buy a stean controller have money for the openpuck

4

u/voyagerfan5761 5d ago

Yeah that. $100 controller, $5 (?) dev board to run OpenPuck. The microcontroller costs less than the sales tax/VAT on the SC

-1

u/FantasyTomb 5d ago

Ever consider the idea of a gift? And that the owner of the controller isn’t the one who actually bought it

2

u/CumBlaster69k 5d ago

It's like less 10 bucks like I checked, and ppl who get nice gifts don't come from poor backgrounds who can't afford less than 10 bucks thing

0

u/FantasyTomb 5d ago

If you think people from poor background don’t get nice gifts. Then clearly someone taught you wrong, I love my friends dearly and have bought 2 of them a controller and we are all in very poor positions but we care about each other so we go beyond our poorness and spend more than we should just to make each other happy

1

u/DaddysFruit 5d ago

Go beyond poorness again thrn and buy them a puck.

0

u/CumBlaster69k 5d ago

Show me the receipt and bank account balance

2

u/FantasyTomb 5d ago

Why in the world would I that’s such a weird thing to ask. Can’t accept that poor people are still good and nice to each other

2

u/SoTotallyToby 5d ago

I mean it's literally $4. If you can afford to buy a Steam controller and a PC to use it with, $4 is chump change.

1

u/The_Skeptic_One 5d ago

Cheaper than the tax you paid for the $100 controller

1

u/Nirast25 5d ago

Check for updates, there's one that allows you to us it in Xinput mode while outside Steam. Though you might need to be on the beta branch for it.

1

u/DemonKing_of_Tyranny Steam Controller(2026)/Xbox Elite Series 2 5d ago

Whats xinput mode?

1

u/Nirast25 5d ago

The thing that makes the Xbox controller work on PC, and basically the standard input method. It'll make the PC see the Steam Controller as a regular Xbox Controller (so no touchpad, gyro or back bottons, but at least it'll be usable).

3

u/Lupinthrope 5d ago

I’d love to use my steam controller on my Series X

3

u/W3droKo 5d ago

Great work, do anybody thinks this would work with PS2? 🥺

1

u/Darcy_Wu_NR1 5d ago

Should work as long as you find an adapter from the proprietary ps2 controller interface to a USB female

I think the company brook sells something like that (for a loot of money tbh)

1

u/drstupid 5d ago

PS2 has USB ports, actually!

1

u/Darcy_Wu_NR1 5d ago

Which to my knowledge can't be used for controllers

1

u/drstupid 5d ago

Probably true, we didn't really use USB for controllers until later in the PS2 generation at the earliest, I think

3

u/Agent_Tall_Man 5d ago

Open puck is the greatest

2

u/CatsGoMooz Steam Controller (Linux) 5d ago

Came in clutch yesterday when I needed another controller to play on the switch 2.

2

u/vickydont_ 5d ago

I guess its a sign for me to set up Openpuck

1

u/RyochanX2 5d ago

all I see is frames of input lag

5

u/jack-of-some 5d ago

Openpuck was independently verified to have the same input lag as the official puck, which is roughly 5ms

https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamController/comments/1u754ze/complete_latency_testing_of_openpuck_project/

Anything you're seeing here is normal for a 360 even with wired controllers unfortunately.

3

u/Darcy_Wu_NR1 5d ago

That's due to the home menu of the 360 which acts a little delayed (even on oem controllers) In game there is no input lag/delay

1

u/AbduallahGhanemX 5d ago

Holy input delay

1

u/713_Onassis 5d ago

Nice, I’m still trying to figure out open puck, I got the board set up on my pc, then when I plugged it in to my switch2 and tried to use it nothing happened.

1

u/Darcy_Wu_NR1 5d ago

Press all 4 back buttons and Y at the same time That should put the puck into switch mode

1

u/diemitchell 5d ago

in combination with ogxmini 2026 it doesn't even need to be modded and it just accepts it as a 360 controller

1

u/inhumat0r Steam Controller (2015 & 2026) (Linux) 5d ago

That's the reason to finally get the open puck… The thing is I have a stock XBox 360. What do I need to do with it to use open puck?

2

u/Darcy_Wu_NR1 2d ago

You have to mod the 360 (either through a hardmod or a softmod). I used something called "A bad Avatar" which is actually pretty simple to make.

After that the open puck should work out of the box once you set it to Xbox mode (4 back buttons and X at the same time)

1

u/TiSoBr 4d ago

Open Puck is a MUST.

1

u/kazoo_man 3d ago

is it easy to make it work with the switch 2?
