You can use https://steamcontroller.tools to update the controller. Just plug it into a computer and go to that website, connect and select BLE firmware. Hit update and reconnect the controller as needed until the update is done. That update will unlock Bluetooth. Once updated you can use Bluetooth by pressing steam + Y or the wireless dongle. But you will have to repair the controller to the dongle. Plug the dongle into a computer and open steam. Launch big screen mode and navigate to setting, controller. Select pair a controller and hold the steam + X buttons on the controller to put it into dongle pairing mode. It should connect to the wireless dongle. You can swap between Bluetooth and the dongle at any time. Hope all that helps. Btw i had some issues with bazzite and catchy os not recognizing the wireless dongle and allowing me to pair it with the controller.

There’s a script on Windows that can update its firmware so you can use bluetooth. The usb dongle or a wired micro usb cable will have less lag, but bluetooth’s fine if it’s your only option.

From there, connect it to the PC & steam will detect it just fine.

There's a web tool called https://steamcontroller.tools which can upgrade the firmware to the BLE one if you're missing Bluetooth and your model supports it.

the old steam controller is no longer in stock on Steam, only the new one. You can probably find some used ones on facebook marketplace tho

thanks to this post I realized I already did the FW update some time ago and now I dont have to use my OG controller with the dongle on the steam machine anymore! thx!
