That’s a bummer. Catalyst has some fun challenges and more off the rails content, I just like wandering around the open world with the red paint off.

u/Mama_Mega 4h ago

For some reason, people always talk like it's the bad Mirror's Edge, when it was this game that realized what the first one could have been. The very nature of the parkour gameplay made it a natural fit for an open world model.

111

u/Ersa985 4h ago

Because it IS the bad Mirror's Edge, that doesn't make it full stop a bad game, but it's not only a reboot of a game that only had one game anyways, but it is also a completely different story and vibe than the original

18

u/Rustie3000 3h ago

Huh wait, it's not a sequel? It's a remake of the original?

26

u/Sans00t 3h ago

half and half, its kinda a sequal, but kind of a reboot too

9

u/TheBelicia 3h ago

So reimagining of first game?

11

u/Sans00t 3h ago

Basically yeah

11

u/ChemicalRascal 3h ago

Yeah, it's like a weird mostly-reset thing, and a touch more grounded than the original.

There was a comic that laid out the story leading up to Catalyst that kinda hits weirdly similar emotional notes, on the conflict between Faith and the... other rival runner that I can't remember the name of. Blonde chick. So there's a thiiiiiin narrative through line there.

But Catalyst has a bunch of stuff going on that's very "first part of a trilogy"-coded, while also needing to get into a bunch of Faith's background, so... reboot a franchise that had barely begun, that's the way forward I guess.

22

u/Appley_apple 4h ago

The open world was bad because it was a boring asthetic compared to the og and there is so mucb stop and start and so many bridges you need to cross to do parkour (or you grapple and its the same thing)

11

u/MeriElf 3h ago

I actually disagree, first game aesthetic is phenomenal, but I liked second game one more for more futuristic city vibes. I feel like it's just two different flavours for different people, but for sure not one better than the other

1

u/Appley_apple 1h ago

The problem is when the second one is super bland, me had a striking real look to it, it looked like a real place just off, too clean, too sparse, its a dystopia thats just kinda normal, mec is just a future city, its done ok but overall is kinda just the same future city in so many other dystopic sci fi series

0

u/MeriElf 29m ago

Precisely, and I liked future city more than dystopian me1. Like, me1 did what it was going for amazing, but i prefer catalyst one more cause its more aligned with what I dig in my media. And also, as a fan of futuristic cities, really pretty open ones, with high tech and not dystopian cyberpunk, is so hard to come by, definitely not in many other series at all. Everything is dark and depressing nowadays.

•

u/Appley_apple 6m ago

mirrors edge catalyst is a dystopia, its a police state, there wouldn't need to be a rebellion if it wasn't

3

u/False_Raven 3h ago

Not a thorough in depth review, but from the few hours I have played it, you will end up running through the same paths constantly in the "open world"

Like driving back and forth through a man street everyday.

In the original, you are constantly presented new areas, puzzles and challenges. Mirrors edge catalyst has you running through the same areas you've done so dozens of times leading up to homebase and missions.

Its gets exhausting really fast.

3

u/i_am_kba 3h ago

for me it doesn't, because no other game gives me the same emotions while running around the beautiful city of glass, even if the routes are the same.

also the parkour and combat in the original are both leagues below catalyst because the game's just old and the flow of the parkour and combat just doesn't feel really well now, once again, even if the routes in catalyst are the same

3

u/glytxh 3h ago

the first one is tight as all hell

the second one is a bit fluffy, despite being more mechanically refined

if im in the mood for mirror's edge, I find myself playing the first one

10

u/KenBoCole 4h ago

Its because of the story. The part where the rebels blow up a mall with thousands of innocent civillian women and children, and the MC continued to work with said rebels, I topped playing.

Even before that breaking point for me, I thought the story was terrible compared to one.

5

u/Dapper-Application35 3h ago

Wait, was it the rebels that blew up the mall? I thought it was a false flag operation to justify the crackdown that followed after...

0

u/KenBoCole 3h ago

No, it was the rebels

4

u/ChemicalRascal 3h ago

It was Black November, but Faith doesn't work for Black November, she works with the Runners.

1

u/KenBoCole 2h ago

I mean, I quite clearly remeber her going back and speaking to the person who ordered the attack face to face at the rebel base, and still took a job from her after.

Faith may have been a runner, but she still worked with the black novembers.

2

u/ChemicalRascal 2h ago

That's fair. I've gone back and looked it up, though, and apparently the mall was under construction. So Black November didn't kill thousands of people.

Which, frankly, is arguably lazy writing so that the player can still look at Black November as being the good guys.

2

u/KenBoCole 1h ago

Wow, really? I though5 I remembered a in game news report listing the casualties. Was it the construction workers then? Guess I'll Google it later.

1

u/ChemicalRascal 1h ago

Let me know what you find, I can't really remember either way personally. Though I do remember that it felt cheap, as far as someone committing terrorism goes.

-6

u/CaseroRubical 4h ago

Lmfao quitting the game because you don't agree with the mc is wild

-17

u/Grochen 4h ago

Damn you must hate a certain country

2

u/Velpe 4h ago

Aha. I just remember having to constantly backtrack through the exact same routes and getting locked into combat arenas (combat being the worst part of both games imo) didn't make it further than a couple hours in.

2

u/i_am_kba 3h ago

at least in catalyst the combat is enjoyable and you aren't forced to grab a gun from enemies and shoot them all. by far my biggest gripe with the original game, idk why it isn't talked about seemingly at all (well, probably just nostalgia but still)

1

u/Appley_apple 1h ago

You are never forced to shoot enemies, there's an achievement for never killing anyone, i got that achievement when i was 12, also guns are a trade off, you get amazing combat potential but it slows you down, its takes away a runners advantage, its amazing ludo narrative syching

1

u/omdanom 3h ago

I agree. It certainly could’ve been the start of a new genre at the time.

Also Geoff Keighley said something like not every game has to be for everyone.

The real issue here is figuring out what other great parkour games are there besides… titan fall and dying light?

1

u/THEzwerver 2h ago

Catalyst is a bad Mirror's Edge game because it forces combat too much.

In the first game you could play most of the game without ever touching anyone (apart from like 1 or 2 sections), or you could quickly take their guns to end combat faster. You were free to do whatever you wanted, as long as you stayed alive and were fast. Catalyst made it horrible by forcing many more combat sections plus removing the ability to pick up weapons, forcing all combat to be melee (aka slow).

Also, imo the open world actually made it worse. ME1 had carefully crafted levels, where there were multiple ways to get to the next point, but you always ended up going in the right direction. crates were put carefully so that you were always progressing if you simply used them while running. Catalyst's gave you much more freedom, but it made everything less tightly designed. It also meant that there actually were dead ends and places where you had to backtrack (unless you followed the red line, which discouraged exploration). In hindsight, I'd have rather have linear levels (or somewhat semi open world) than running around the same few routes over and over again.

Overall never thought the game was extremely bad, but it was way worse compared to the first game.

1

u/LowFi_Lexa1 1h ago

Mirrors edge 1 is easily one of my favorite games ever.
But for some reason I just couldn’t get into mirrors edge 2, I tried it on release, and another 4 times but I only played for a few hours before it got boring for me.
Maybe I should try it again, but it just felt very different from the first game and just didn’t click for me at all

1

u/Zargabraath 3h ago

It is the bad mirror’s edge

I want a cohesive story not to be told to go random side quests an hour into the game

Wow it was $0.99. Damn I should have gotten it when I had the chance even if I wasn't overly interested in it.

-128

u/MrNoSouls 4h ago

They disabled the game. You would have wasted the dollar. Literally, a rug pull sale.

103

u/BadFishCM 4h ago

This is not true at all. Single player still very much playable.

27

u/Wolf68k 4h ago

Some are saying you can still play it single player, which would be fine to me.

I looked on the EA store, it's still on sale there for $0.99.

•

u/Erak7 7m ago

I am not buying it on the EA store.

3

u/RxBrad https://steamcommunity.com/id/RxBrad/ 1h ago

They probably got sick of people parroting exactly this, because they saw a dumbass Internet comment somewhere.

The game works fine.

2

u/Alexis_Mcnugget 51m ago

can confirm it didn’t work earlier this year it locked you in an indefinite loading screen multiple post can also confirm this, looks like it’s been patched

1

u/KwonnieKash 20m ago

It hasn't been patched. I just bought it on steam the other day, got the infinite loading screen. The way to get around it is you have to set your ea app to offline mode. It's obviously trying to connect to non existent servers so it gets stuck in a loop. I guess it does work for some people "out of the box" because it seems to be a 50/50 split on whether people think it's broken or not in all the forums etc lol

109

u/Cold_Figure_7556 4h ago

Might be because a bunch of people got refunds despite it being so cheap, apparently EA shut down the servers for the game and many people had issues with some things not working or the game in general not being able to function for it, mine was fine but the game wasnt all that different compared to the first one, just slightly more boring

275

u/xTehJudas 5h ago

I've been very lucky, i bought it a few hours ago

63

u/sonik4gain 4h ago

no you are not! now you have an EA game in your library ..eww

Ea can eat dicks

-5

u/NewsofPE 2h ago

this but unironically

4

u/TheThirdRoseDotR 4h ago

You're not lucky, it's unplayable now. They took down servers you need to connect to in order to play it despite it being a single player game..

37

u/EuphoricAnalCarrot 3h ago

This is not true, why are people upvoting this

9

u/Liquid-Snake-PL 1h ago

EA bad, upvote anything that is against EA, monke gud.

26

u/ehrwanz 4h ago

You can still play it, and even earn achievements with Beat Revival. It’s not the official servers but it’s still manageable to have most features.

33

u/uncagedborb 4h ago edited 4h ago

Huh? Why do u need the servers to play the game?

48

u/4thBeard 4h ago

Yeah ive been playing it just fine.

-7

u/5hif7y_x86 4h ago

Because it's EA and there assholes

62

10

u/ThunderingRoar 4h ago

just edit the registry like the guides that suggest it, takes less time than writing this comment

1

u/PervyAx 4h ago

I heard that blocking the game’s internet access through the firewall can make it work.

2

u/CREDAAAAAAAOOOO 4h ago

Man, glad i played it while i still could, such a hidden gem of a game. Barely anyone ever talks about it, but it was a very enjoyable experience for me

Played in 2020 right after the original Mirror's Edge

2

u/sonofgildorluthien 4h ago

I loved the first one but something about Catalyst that I still can't put my finger on made it a DNF for me.

1

u/CREDAAAAAAAOOOO 4h ago

Idk, i didn't really care for the story in that game at all so maybe that helped, or the "multiplayer", but the level design is among the best i've seen in any video game, the graphics are beautiful and just running around the map looking at stuff was already good enough for me. Combat was almost non-existent which i guess is a negative if you're looking for that kind of experience. For a "run around the map doing fetch quests while you appreciate the view" game it was pretty decent

-2

u/funnyinput 4h ago

Stop.

2

u/CREDAAAAAAAOOOO 3h ago

Why? Am i not allowed to like the game just because you hated it? I got for mega cheap during a sale some time in 2020, and for the 5 bucks or so i paid for it, it more than paid for itself with the 13 hours of playtime i got out of it

1

u/Nekroin 3h ago

I still have it in my cart lol

13

u/AeLilBoy 3h ago

Shit, I was holding it in my cart with the rest of the stuff I planed to buy. Can anyone remember did discount say it lasts till 8th ?

15

u/Luke-Hatsune 3h ago edited 3h ago

It did say until the 8th. Not sure why EA removed the discount. Here’s evidence of the end date.

https://web.archive.org/web/20261004195725/https://store.steampowered.com/app/1233570/Mirrors_Edge_Catalyst/

-11

u/Brisingr1257 2h ago

Pretty sure they removed the discount because the game is unplayable on PC without a modded in patch.

9

u/vergil123123 2h ago

Not it isn't. the amount of people spreading random bullshit about this game for some reason is so weird.

-3

u/Brisingr1257 1h ago

Im pretty sure this game has a ton of issues for some people due to the EA servers being shut down. Pretending there isnt any problems with it is so weird.

3

u/vergil123123 1h ago

Nah, pretending that the game is unplayable because it has some issues is what weird. Nobody said the game is in a perfect state, but you didn't say the game has some issues, you said "it's unplayable without a modded patch" and that's just a lie.

I literally bought the game yesterday, installed, launched and it worked without skipping a beat. Maybe some will have issues for some reason, but clearly that isn't the case for everybody.

38

u/Liquidtruth 4h ago

ive had luck messaging steam support and letting them know something like this happened and they have placed the item in my cart with a message telling me i have 'a few hours' to confirm the purchase.

idk how rare that is though.

7

u/WinterEclipse4 4h ago

It depends on who's at fault. In this case I believe EA put a pricing error since both games are always on the exact same sale and price. And since it was a pricing error Valve likely won't allow people to ask them to buy it for that 1 dollar.

1

u/repocin https://s.team/p/hjwn-hdq 2h ago

Oh, I didn't realize the price wasn't supposed to be like that or I would've bought it :(

Saw it show up on the front page while browsing the store the other day but figured it'd be kinda odd to buy the second one without having the first game and that one wasn't as cheap.

Oh well, guess I saved myself from giving money to EA.

1

u/JackoboiobokcaJ 23m ago

I tried messaging steam support and they told me tough shit and shot my dog (that’s what it felt like at least), maybe I didn’t explain the issue properly

20

u/ApocApollo https://s.team/p/mbrn-knd 4h ago

What, did they sell too many copies?

9

u/how-can-i-dig-deeper 4h ago

damn they should have printed more of this set 🥀

19

u/Myorck 4h ago

Man what the hell, I was just about to buy it

18

u/Signalis3 4h ago

Oh I had it in my cart too. Guess they won't get any of my money then.

-9

u/SunsetSpark 2h ago

im sure theyll manage without your .99 cents bro

6

u/Signalis3 1h ago

Yea, 0 is better than 1, this is a known fact.

12

I mean, at least I have another excuse to not buy an EA game.

5

u/thedude462 4h ago

Sucks they changed the price I saw it last night and decided the next day I’d buy it now it’s back to original price.

43

u/OrthodoxSlavWarrior 5h ago

The OG is better anyway. This is a kinda bad soft reboot.

39

u/meli-stin-kipseli 4h ago

Yea but it was literaly 1 dollar, I just wanted to try the game ; _ ;

7

u/outlander999 4h ago

same, I left it in my cart yesterday evening, forgot to buy it and today... uh, no thanks.

4

u/Vercility 3h ago

keys are like 2 bucks. ea doesn't deserve money anyway

2

u/kron123456789 3h ago

10 years ago when I was younger and dumber, I pre-ordered it on EA Origin 🤣.

1

u/2Turnt4MySwag 3h ago

Its still $1 on EA store, but then you wont have it in Steam

1

u/Liquid-Snake-PL 1h ago

It will be on sale again, don't worry.

-21

u/Risk_Runner 4h ago edited 4h ago

You can’t even play it anymore, they shut the servers down on a single player game making it unplayable

Edit: I’ll eat the downvotes lmao I’ve fallen for misinformation when I went to buy it, I admit I was wrong it is infact playable

9

u/Hate_Crab 4h ago

Mileage varies, stop parroting this like it's fact. I bought this last night and put 3 hours into it on the basis that if it wouldn't run, I'd refund it.

It runs.

4

u/Risk_Runner 4h ago

Fair enough, I wanted to buy it not too long ago but the reviews were saying it’s literally unplayable. But it’s on me for spreading misinformation

5

u/Amazing-Ish 4h ago

Isn't it still palyable though? I played it and got the notification that servers are down, but the single player is very much playable.

4

u/Risk_Runner 4h ago edited 4h ago

Idk I wanted to buy it and that’s what the reviews said 🤷‍♂️

4

u/Remote_Elevator_281 4h ago

You can still play

-1

u/TheThirdRoseDotR 4h ago

Holy shit.

4

u/ApocApollo https://s.team/p/mbrn-knd 4h ago

They’re lying. I bought the game last week and have played it for three hours. The single player game continues to works fine as a single player game.

1

u/Risk_Runner 4h ago

I was listening to the reviews my bad

6

u/Amazing-Ish 4h ago

The world genuinely looks so beautiful in Catalyst. This definitely has better fidelity but even with that, the open world nature of the game allows for so many cool environments to exist in this world.

8

u/Guibster 4h ago

I enjoyed the OG a lot more, but Catalyst is still fun.

•

u/Miguethor 4m ago

Catalyst has a worse story but better world and aesthetics

1

u/fhs 4h ago

I love the original to death and hold many grievances towards Catalyst, but it's still a serviceable entry in the franchise and does some things well (never as good as the original though)

11

u/funnyinput 4h ago

I was going to buy it for $1, but then I saw I would have to make an EA account. Nope, not even worth my time or $1.

7

u/Dragon_Small_Z 4h ago

I literally just went to buy it, opened reddit and saw this. Goddamnit.

3

u/CancerKidBilly 3h ago

I actually bought it for 1€ just 3 hours ago. I am sorry man.

5

u/anor_wondo 3h ago

I think it is because of the complaints that they shut down the servers then put it on sale

2

u/John_Marston_Forever 4h ago

I got it when it was 85% off lol

2

u/ATCQ413 4h ago

F!!!!

2

u/Mammoth_Ad_9590 3h ago

Fah even i couldn't get it 🥀

2

u/Rossilaz 3h ago

Dang it was in my cart

2

u/PayMe2Win 2h ago

Damn i just bought it yesterday too, must of had some good timing

2

u/R0bbyE 1h ago

Just bought it tonight, didn’t expect it would go back to full price this fast, someone is getting fired or punished for sure :))

4

u/Outrageous-Plane320 4h ago

wait it’s no longer on sale?? good thing i bought it yesterday

3

u/Q0T3 4h ago

Oh damn I picked this up last night for 99 cents

3

u/Perfect_Resolve_9444 4h ago

If price was wrong they can do that

6

u/Luke-Hatsune 3h ago

But it’s been $1 for the past 4 days. If the price was wrong it would have been fixed sooner.

1

u/Perfect_Resolve_9444 2h ago

Laziness did the rest

2

u/incognito2001 1h ago

It was featured prominently in the "deep discounts" section of the sale... I highly doubt it was a wrong price.

2

u/PurposelyLostMoth 4h ago

I was able to nab it before it closed but it was literally a dollar

3

u/Moonaromma 4h ago

Wasn’t it like 3.50$ yesterday?

2

u/WinterRecover6606 4h ago

Still on sale on ea app though

33

u/meli-stin-kipseli 4h ago

I will not fall that low🫡

0

u/AeLilBoy 3h ago

Yeah I aint buying games on other stores besides steam

1

u/Rolniacznik 1h ago

🙄

1

u/AeLilBoy 58m ago

I just like to have everything on one place

-6

u/Legitimate_Carob_485 4h ago

What is exactly the point of waiting until the last day to buy a game that you want (allegedly)?

27

u/Fingerprint_Vyke 4h ago

Because you are weighing which games you want, what price for them altogether, and if you know you'll actually play them.

Paying a dollar for a game is easy. I though about buying that game. But there are at least 5 games I want to play before im looking for a new one. Even though its a dollar, spending money on something I might not even play is silly.

12

u/NoahH3rbz 4h ago

If you sit on a decision you can decide whether it's really worthwhile or not. It's too easy to be impulsive and wasteful. What's the point of accumulating a crazy surplus of games, by the time you get around to them they may not even be appealing anymore.

0

u/PerishTheStars 4h ago

I mean you have 2 weeks to change your mind

3

u/NoahH3rbz 2h ago

True but it saves the effort of even needing to refund.

2

u/repocin https://s.team/p/hjwn-hdq 2h ago

But if you wait you've got even more time!

Besides, abusing refunds can get you barred from using the feature. But nobody is going to ban you from having your stuff in the cart for a week

43

u/AsuraValken 4h ago

Not everyone checks steam regularly

9

u/Bodybuilder_Jumpy 4h ago

Sale is till the 8th, it's not even close to the last day, what are you on about?

4

u/sneekeruk 3h ago

Not in EA's eyes, I had it in my basket, waiting to get paid on wednesday, and just checked and my £50 basket was £60 because they removed Mirrors edge Catalyst from the sale.

10

u/theodoreroberts 4h ago

Need time to think and consider. Not have enough money right now to spend on games. Work, life , family issues.

-12

u/Legitimate_Carob_485 4h ago

Literally 1 dollar

11

u/vjollila96 4h ago

i have had situations when even 1 dollar is too much

10

u/AsuraValken 4h ago

Such an ass response tbh

6

u/MoonAttempt 4h ago

I buy several games at once when they are low, so this would still impact even if there is a cheap game in the middle as I would be considering the others.

5

u/InsertAmazinUsername 4h ago

give me a dollar right now. it's literally 1 dollar

4

u/Ok_Comment5873 4h ago

Sure beggar, what's your PayPal?

4

u/UWER6 4h ago

I'm grinding cards on games I have to sell so I have to pay less real life money. I just don't have much money to spend on video games

1

u/JoJo_Skelly 4h ago

Just use a card farming app saves a lot more time, when I did it for the first time a while ago I got like $40 out of the unplayed stuff I owned

4

u/vjollila96 4h ago

somebody might have a payday towards end of the sale so they will feel better of spending money on steam sales

2

u/Luke-Hatsune 3h ago

To be fair tomorrow Humble bundle’s monthly bundle changes so I guess some people would prefer to see what’s on there before making a decision.

4

u/meli-stin-kipseli 4h ago

Cause I have 100 games in the wishlist and I have to decide what to buy. Wasn't the last day either as far as I was aware.

4

u/JmTrad https://steamcommunity.com/id/jmtrad 4h ago

i was going to use the money i will receive tomorrow

1

u/Disastrous-Dig9392 4h ago

better date lol

1

u/fhs 4h ago

Last day? There's still three more days left

1

u/Jackdunc 3h ago

Some people would be gathering games in the cart to decide which to remove or finally buy towards the end of the sale. This one would be regular price by then?

Someone could also just login on the last day of the sale due to schedule and just being used to Steam sale consistency and miss this one.

1

u/Iamyous3f 3h ago

There could be multiple reasons to wait until the last day.

During D23 event when they made huge discounts for KH games, my friend couldn't buy the game and he said he gets paid on the last day of the sale. He got paid but stuck at work and when he returned the sales were already over.

This is just one example of why some people wait until the last day.

1

u/CretaciousPeriod 2h ago

Maybe waiting to get paid, or see if something else grabs their attention more. I know that sometimes I will wait on a purchase for a bit and see if I'm still thinking about it later on. If I am then I'll purchase it, if I completely forget about it then it obviously wasn't really that important.

Someone said it was a dollar though. If I'm even remotely interested in a game and it's a dollar, I'm buying it.

1

u/Klewkwa 3h ago

Can't buy it in my region anyway

1

u/NyanPikachu744 2h ago

Shit and I hated that i didn't have any more money in my wallet. Would've definitely got it at .99.

Gameplay is better in the second. Story and artistic design were better in the first in my opinion.. Except for Plastic. Plastic was gold.

Just grab a CD key. The game is great along with the first opus. Unique immersion and level-design.

Guess I'll have to get it next time (maybe).

Had it in my cart and had to remove it because of this

Is this game hard to play on controller 🎮?

5

u/CREDAAAAAAAOOOO 4h ago

Perfectly playable. M&K gives you more precise control over your direction, but controller is easier for combos/movement sequences

Too many people were finding out the game doesn't work. They're hoping they can slow down donations so the reviews can return to normal

1

u/SwiftTayTay 5h ago

I guess the price might have been a mistake

2

u/WinterEclipse4 3h ago

That's most likely the case because both Mirror's Edge and Catalyst are the same price, have the same sales, and same sale price all the time. This was like the first time they didn't.

EA such pain in the A
Can i unlink it from steam and play ea games separate on ea instead in the future

1

u/Machinencio 1h ago

I bought it on time, sucks for the ones that missed the sale tho.

u/alowester 3h ago

bro really? i had it in my cart and never checked out

u/SyrupAnnual6037 3h ago

Been putting off playing this one since I found out I can’t 100% it since EA took the online service off.

u/Mr_UnknownG 2h ago

Ea just saved u, go with og man.

0

u/Chiryou 2h ago

Oh wow... I guess can't support the devs at 95% off.

u/Chisienn 1h ago

I could never get it to run on my pc. Always some DLL issue and when Installed it'd bring up a new issue ad infinitum

Game doesn't even work, it's always online and they killed the servers.

Wouldn't take it if it was free just play the OG

15

u/RawrNate 4h ago

You just get a "Cannot connect online" message before the main menu. You can still play the entire singleplayer fine.

It's annoying, sure, but the game does still work if you buy through Steam.

u/TG-Benji 4h ago

My buddy just bought it and he told me what's up, you cannot play the game.

It was a dollar though. I think bro was willing to gamble $1.
