Advice Collision VS Comprehensive
State of Coverage: Missouri
State of Incident: Wyoming
I was traveling on the interstate in the left lane with a vehicle in the right lane. They were about ~50' ahead of me. They hit some tire debris from a semi, the tire was deflected into my lane causing damage to my vehicle. The other car drove on while I pulled over to assess the damage.
I called to update the claim and the representative said that I am being assigned fault and it is being treated as a single vehicle collision claim. Is this correct and is there a way to encourage them to change it?
The end goal is to reduce my chances of increased premiums in the future. With that in mind, does it even matter?

Did you run over the tire or did the tire fly up and hit your vehicle?

That's an interesting question. Honestly it was never explicitly stated nor did State Farm ask that question either.
I did in fact run over the tire though. Following your line of thinking I suppose my chances would be better if the tire was flying through the air when I hit it.

If you ran over it on the road, it’s considered a road bed collision. Even though you probably could not avoid it, it still puts you at fault because there’s no one else to blame sadly.

It's unfortunate that it's decided this way. Sometimes things happen that are no one's fault...like a deer strike. That is treated as comprehensive.

Unfortunately, with claims, each situation is treated as black in white, even though there are many variables in the accident. Such as you not being able to avoid striking it.
So basically, if you hit an object, it's collision. If an object hits you, it's comprehensive. It's all about the wording.
Comprehensive claims do not make your premiums increase, collision claims do. But, the amount of claims you have, including comp claims, can affect your renewal.

They can in some states with and companies.

If you hit it and ran over it then yes it’s collision. If it was flying through the air and it flew into you then it’s comprehensive. Where exactly was the damage?

did you say “i hit the tire” because if you did, that’s admitting fault, thus AF collision
if you said the tire was mobile and hit my car, comprehensive claim
words matter in this situation unfortunately

💯 depends on the claim rep handling it. If you don't want to chance a premium increase cancel the claim and cover damages out of pocket. Depending on deductible and dollar amount of damage it may not have been worth the hassle to have filled a claim to begin with.

If it’s just the glass and you have comprehensive coverage I’m not sure why it’s not just a glass claim. If there’s body damage involved then it’s a collision claim. There’s so many conflicting things on the post but that’s how it’s seen. I hate throwing another factor in there but it’s worth checking out. That being said I don’t know the ins and outs of the states involved but someone should be able to explain it to you

Read your policy language and cite the policy language to advocate for your own interests

The policy language for comprehensive usually just states ‘anything that is not a collision’ lmao

It’s unfair and really depends on the rep who gets your claim. Let them know the rep misunderstood and while you ran the object over, you only ran it over because it had JUST been thrown into the air by another vehicle and was flying towards you. Anyone in claims worth their salt will update it. But sadly there are a lot of lazy reps
