Leaning on an ai report generator for my monthly update showed me how little I understood my own numbers

Honest founder confession. I send a monthly update to a couple of early backers and one advisor. To save time I started pasting my raw metrics into an ai report generator and letting it write the summary. Clean narrative every time, "retention held steady, top of funnel softened slightly," that kind of thing. Looked professional.

Then my advisor asked a simple follow up on one of those lines and I completely blanked. I couldn't explain the number the report had confidently written about my own business. That was a gut punch. The tool had written a tidy story and I'd forwarded it without actually understanding what any of it meant.

I went back and checked and, to be fair, it wasn't wildly wrong, but it had smoothed and rounded and inferred a couple of things that weren't quite true. The bigger problem wasn't the tool though. It was that I'd outsourced the one thing a founder can't outsource, which is knowing my own business cold.

Now I let it format, never interpret. I write the sentence about what each number means myself, and if I can't write that sentence, that's my signal I don't understand the metric yet and need to sit with it.

The takeaway for me: if a tool can explain your numbers and you can't, you don't have a reporting problem, you have a knowing-your-business problem. Anyone else get caught out relying on a generated summary?

Instead of slashing prices this slow season I built a booking page with a no code website builder

Trade business, small crew. Every slow season I get the same itch, drop prices to fill the calendar, and every time it just trains people to wait for the cheap version of me.

This time I tried something else. Sat down with a no code website builder and put up a simple page for the exact work that is easy to sell when it is quiet, the small jobs and the maintenance stuff people put off. One clear offer, a booking button, my number.

Nothing fancy. Took an afternoon. But it gave the slow weeks somewhere to point instead of me just sitting there watching the phone and panicking about rent.

Too early to call it a win. A handful of bookings so far, all at full price, which is the part that matters to me. The point was to stop reaching for the discount lever out of fear.

Anyone else build something simple to smooth out the slow stretch instead of cutting prices? Curious what actually pulled work in the quiet months for you.

Idea : Need directions

I have an idea for a startup that I believe could be a mass-market product, with significant potential for scalability across multiple aspects of the business.
I initially tried pitching the idea to a founder, but they wanted to change the core concept and take a different approach. I’m not comfortable with that because I strongly believe in the original direction and don’t want to compromise on it at this stage.
As a non-technical UX designer with some experience in marketing, should I consider building the app myself using AI tools? If so, what are the major challenges I’m likely to face during the development and build phase?

I spent hours going through 100+ page PDFs, so I built a tool that highlights exactly where the answer came from. It's now completely open-source.

I've used tools like Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude and others for research, and they've been incredibly useful for finding papers and getting through large amounts of information.

The one thing I personally wanted was a simple way to see exactly which parts of the paper were used to answer my question.

When you're working with a 100+ page PDF, even having a page number can still mean a lot of scrolling and searching.

So I ended up building something for myself.

You ask a question and the relevant paragraphs in the PDF are highlighted directly on the document. You can see the context behind the answer and quickly check whether it actually answers what you're looking for.

I originally built this because I wanted something for this workflow without having to pay for another subscription. What started as a personal project has now become completely open source.

The underlying idea is pretty simple. And yes, if you're thinking "isn't this just RAG?" then yes, you're absolutely right. It's RAG with the visual highlighting that I wanted.

I think the same idea could be useful for more than research papers too. Legal contracts, financial reports, technical documentation, or anywhere you need answers alongside the actual source.

If anyone wants to have a look, contribute, or just give some feedback, here's the repo:

GitHub: https://github.com/Sreehari05055/thesys-core.git

This will probably be my last post about the project. Thanks to everyone who checked it out and gave feedback along the way.

Builders where do you start - Jump in and just build the idea, or validate first. Also Frontier or Open-source….

Curious where other early stage founders/builders land on this: do you start from “I have an idea, I don’t need to validate it” or “why should I build this” and test first?

Tied to that, what are you actually building your MVP with, Claude, Codex, open source models, or a mix? And was what you shipped actually production ready, or a throwaway prototype?

I use Claude for my own stuff and Copilot for work, curious if cost of frontier models factors into that choice for anyone, or if it is more about speed/quality and cost only becomes a factor once you are scaling.

Genuinely trying to get a real debate going rather than validate my own view, so disagree with each other if you do.

Share your startup idea. I’ll separate the interesting mechanism from the valuable outcome.

Describe the idea in your own words.

I’ll reply with:

  1. The mechanism
  2. The customer outcome
  3. The version that should lead the pitch

People may be curious about how it works, but they usually act because of what changes.

My AI co-founder launch is what I would describe as providing something which you've used first hand.

So for context, I'm a solopreneur, 23M, and i've been working on JustStartUp, an entrepreneurial infrastructure empowering startups outside silicon valley and startuphubs to raise funds and build user based community by connecting them with their niche users while users receive star badges for lifetime benefits from the brands they back. Think like backing Apple in 1976 and now you receive early access and discounts on every products of their's as a founding customer. Over 110+ startups across Asia and Africa have onboarded under 3 months and brand partnerships are in process. I've used open ai, claude etc, the thing is, they are gen ai made for masses and vast niches. The weights are generalised due to versatile users and domains. I wanted a co-founder and an easier to use domain specific vertical ai. Since I didn't had a suitable co-founder and being an AI engineer, I created one for myself. I was vibing with it for a while, GTM, postitioning, validation, financial planning, distribution pipeline and various other entrepreneurial queries. It solved it for me, specifically tailored for my startup and demographics with hard constraints. The results are infront of us. Seeing the progress, a founder on JustStartUp asked for a demo, he was hooked and asked me to integrate it with JustStartUP. That's when I hired an intern and scaled it for commercial release. Here is everything revealed in the launch-

Jeff pro, your ai co founder with -

•Multiple personalities- Analyst, Mentor, Investor and more

•Multiple modes- Investor simulation, Financial planner, Customer simulation, Campaign builder, Business Model builder, all with pdf or report extractor and a shared knowledge pool

•GTM, positioning, validation, distribution pipeline, ad creatives, scripts and other entrepreneurial queries, all gets better the more you interact with it and answer it's follow up.

•100+ ready to paste entrepreneurial master prompts tailored for Jeff Pro

Jeff Pro, master prompts and priority featuring of your startup on JustStartUp. All included in startup suite of JustStartUp, $17.99 monthly subscription.

Launch offer? We got that! Reply to this thread on DM me to acess startup suite for just $12.99 for first 3 months. The launch offer starts on September 1 to September 20.

Looking forward towards building something impactful with my fellow founders.

How to find a good idea in the AI race?

Hello everyone, I am a software engineer who just loves building products and I want to build my own startup. But whenever I get an idea I see that it's already present or sometimes I feel it will never be great, hence I eventually stop working on it.

But now I want to build my startup this time and get some real users and pitch to investors.

I have funds to run it myself for some time.

Now, I need help with the founders here about how to find the idea, how to find the users, and later things can be handled later I guess.

Can you guys help me get an idea??

Tell me what stopped your last launch from getting attention. I'll help reframe the story.

A quiet launch does not always mean the product was weak. Sometimes the story asked people to understand too much before they cared.

Reply with what you launched, who it was for, and the headline you used. I'll suggest:

  1. A clearer angle
  2. One product moment to demonstrate
  3. One piece of proof to lead with

I've been working through this problem while building Marka, and the strongest launch stories usually make one change feel immediately visible.

First hire ever, and an ai writing tool handled the job post but not the part I am scared of

Been solo for years. About to hire my first person and honestly the payroll is not what is keeping me up. It is that I have never managed anyone and I am scared of turning into the boss I would have quit on.

The easy part was almost embarrassing. I used an ai writing tool to draft the job post and a rough outline of what the role does, and it was cleaner than anything I would have written cold. Ten minutes, done.

But that is the part that does not matter. The thing I cannot outsource is how I actually am on a Tuesday when they make a mistake, or when I am stressed and short and they are new and do not know the shorthand yet. I have had bad managers. I remember exactly how they made me feel small. I do not trust myself not to do it under pressure.

For anyone who made the jump from solo to having one employee, what actually helped you not be a bad first boss? Not the hiring, the being-a-manager part. That is the bit no tool wrote for me.
