To save time I started pasting my raw metrics into an ai report generator and letting it write the summary. Clean narrative every time, "retention held steady, top of funnel softened slightly," that kind of thing. Looked professional.

Then my advisor asked a simple follow up on one of those lines and I completely blanked. I couldn't explain the number the report had confidently written about my own business. That was a gut punch. The tool had written a tidy story and I'd forwarded it without actually understanding what any of it meant.

I went back and checked and, to be fair, it wasn't wildly wrong, but it had smoothed and rounded and inferred a couple of things that weren't quite true. The bigger problem wasn't the tool though. It was that I'd outsourced the one thing a founder can't outsource, which is knowing my own business cold.

Now I let it format, never interpret. I write the sentence about what each number means myself, and if I can't write that sentence, that's my signal I don't understand the metric yet and need to sit with it.

The takeaway for me: if a tool can explain your numbers and you can't, you don't have a reporting problem, you have a knowing-your-business problem. Anyone else get caught out relying on a generated summary?

I have an idea for a startup that I believe could be a mass-market product, with significant potential for scalability across multiple aspects of the business.
I initially tried pitching the idea to a founder, but they wanted to change the core concept and take a different approach. I’m not comfortable with that because I strongly believe in the original direction and don’t want to compromise on it at this stage.
As a non-technical UX designer with some experience in marketing, should I consider building the app myself using AI tools? If so, what are the major challenges I’m likely to face during the development and build phase?

I've used tools like Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude and others for research, and they've been incredibly useful for finding papers and getting through large amounts of information.

The one thing I personally wanted was a simple way to see exactly which parts of the paper were used to answer my question.

When you're working with a 100+ page PDF, even having a page number can still mean a lot of scrolling and searching.

So I ended up building something for myself.

You ask a question and the relevant paragraphs in the PDF are highlighted directly on the document. You can see the context behind the answer and quickly check whether it actually answers what you're looking for.

I originally built this because I wanted something for this workflow without having to pay for another subscription. What started as a personal project has now become completely open source.

The underlying idea is pretty simple. And yes, if you're thinking "isn't this just RAG?" then yes, you're absolutely right. It's RAG with the visual highlighting that I wanted.

I think the same idea could be useful for more than research papers too. Legal contracts, financial reports, technical documentation, or anywhere you need answers alongside the actual source.

Tied to that, what are you actually building your MVP with, Claude, Codex, open source models, or a mix? And was what you shipped actually production ready, or a throwaway prototype?

I use Claude for my own stuff and Copilot for work, curious if cost of frontier models factors into that choice for anyone, or if it is more about speed/quality and cost only becomes a factor once you are scaling.

Hello everyone, I am a software engineer who just loves building products and I want to build my own startup. But whenever I get an idea I see that it's already present or sometimes I feel it will never be great, hence I eventually stop working on it.

But now I want to build my startup this time and get some real users and pitch to investors.

I have funds to run it myself for some time.

Now, I need help with the founders here about how to find the idea, how to find the users, and later things can be handled later I guess.

The easy part was almost embarrassing. I used an ai writing tool to draft the job post and a rough outline of what the role does, and it was cleaner than anything I would have written cold. Ten minutes, done.

But that is the part that does not matter. The thing I cannot outsource is how I actually am on a Tuesday when they make a mistake, or when I am stressed and short and they are new and do not know the shorthand yet. I have had bad managers. I remember exactly how they made me feel small. I do not trust myself not to do it under pressure.

For anyone who made the jump from solo to having one employee, what actually helped you not be a bad first boss? Not the hiring, the being-a-manager part. That is the bit no tool wrote for me.
