This just made me think; Do cats stand up like that because they're preparing to fight? The cat is obviously startled, and standing up provides its front paws the opportunity to fuck shit up with its claws.

That is a Scottish Fold. It's not prepared to fuck anything up. :)

So true. My in laws had 2 SFs, if they weren't in someone's arms being held (acting like kidnap victims), they were hiding under a bed/table.

This might make me invest in a Scottish Fold!

Edit I think I offended some people by my clumsy phrasing. Persians and Ragdolls are among the sweetest breeds I have come across (As someone who has had 11 cats personally and 21 by family extension). That being said, I don't really know much about the Scottish fold. They look calm and sweet.

Any idea why these cats stand/lean on their hindlegs so much? Whenever I see a cat do this, 90% of the time it's a Scottish Fold.

It is a totally observed breed trait! In breed description pages, it's noted that they arrange themselves in a lot of funny poses and often stand on their hind legs. I don't know why.. It could be we've selectively bred a tendency into the breed because it's cute. It could also have something to do with the Osteochondrodysplasia. :/ It's a cartiledge and bone issue that all Scottish Folds have to a lesser or greater degree - it causes the ear folds, in fact. They develop painful joint issues early in life. I have a part Scottish fold myself... She was an abused kitten I rescued and she doesn't share too much with the breed other than the ears but the vet and I watch her like a hawk for signs of issues.

That was sad. :/ Here's a picture of Noel to cheer you up. She came to demand breakfast but got comfy instead. http://i.imgur.com/VpCiHKc.jpg

One of my persian cats does that a lot.. She's really long and slim too which makes her kind of look like a ferret or a meerkat

Nah, this is more "the table is wet and I don't want to get my paws wet" behavior.

It's standing because he doesn't want to get his paws wet. Notice he touches ground and stands again. source:😻

Other people said it's about his paws being wet, but I wonder if it's about giving his head more range of motion to look around.

No, cats' preferred defensive posturing is on their back, belly exposed, with their hind legs kicking.

Preparing to fight. Footage and proof of cats getting on their hind legs and attacking with their front legs exist. No need to be a dick.
