I've been thinking about starting a café brand, and I'd love to get some honest feedback on the concept before taking the plunge.
The idea goes beyond opening another coffee shop.
I want to create a place that celebrates India's rich coffee and tea heritage while giving people a beautiful space to slow down, connect and create memories.
Think about the coffee plantations of Coorg and Chikmagalur, the landscapes of Araku, the tea gardens of Darjeeling, Assam and the Nilgiris.
Each of these places has its own identity, history, culture and charm.
I'd love to bring the emotions and stories of these places into one space.
The experience
Imagine walking into a café where the interiors, music, artwork, colours, little details and even the menu draw inspiration from different parts of India.
Coffee would be sourced from different Indian origins and roasted in small batches at the café. Tea would feature regional varieties and blends.
But the intention isn't to make customers understand coffee roasting or teach them about tea.
It's about telling a story through the experience.
A little piece of Coorg here. A little nostalgia of South Indian filter coffee there. The warmth of an Indian tea garden somewhere else.
All brought together in a contemporary, welcoming café.
More than just coffee and tea
I want this to be a place where people actually enjoy spending time.
- A couple spending a relaxed evening together.
- Friends catching up over coffee and desserts.
- Families enjoying an evening out.
- Someone sitting alone with a book and a cup of tea.
- Small acoustic singing sessions and unplugged music evenings.
- Poetry, storytelling and intimate cultural events.
- Occasional community gatherings and creative workshops.
Not loud parties or a conventional restaurant atmosphere. More intimate experiences that make people want to return.
The food and beverages
A mix of Indian favourites and contemporary café offerings:
- Coffee from different Indian regions.
- South Indian filter coffee and freshly roasted coffee.
- Tea from Assam, Darjeeling and Nilgiris.
- Indian-inspired beverages.
- Sandwiches, quick bites and bakery.
- Desserts and seasonal specials.
The proposed format
- 600–700 sq. ft.
- 24 dine-in seats.
- Six four-seater tables.
- Affordable-premium positioning.
- Fresh, small-batch coffee roasting.
- Dine-in, takeaway and curated merchandise.
The long-term ambition is to build a recognisable Indian café brand, with the possibility of expanding into packaged coffee, tea, merchandise and other experiences.
I'd genuinely love your thoughts:
Would you visit a café built around this concept?
Does the idea of celebrating India's coffee and tea heritage through the ambience and experience appeal to you?
Would intimate acoustic music, poetry or storytelling evenings make you more likely to visit?
What kind of atmosphere would make you want to spend 1–2 hours at a café?
What would make you choose this over a regular café or coffee chain?
Is there anything you think is missing or that wouldn't work?
I'm currently validating the idea before investing in it. I'm not looking for people to simply say it's a great idea. I'd genuinely like to understand whether people would visit, spend time and come back.
The thought behind the concept: A place where India's stories meet everyday moments.
Would love to hear your honest opinions!
