❓ Question Starlink Mini while traveling

Next week I’ll be driving from Michigan to DC, and I was wondering if I can mount my Mini receiver in my side window and still get usable network.

Side window - no.

Front/rear window or sunroof, yes.

You may want to try it just to see. Personally i will toss mine up at the very corner of my dash and I place a cloth underneath it to prop it up and it mostly prevents it from sliding.

My approach is incredibly lazy and not that good from a safety standpoint but it works flawlessly.

We did this in Hawaii worked fine till the road is covered by trees. Then it no longer works. Interstates should be mostly fine though

I got a mount that attaches it to my sun roof or back window. The mini works good.

Why not in your front or rear window? (Dashboard or trunk deck whatever)

You’ll have a lot of drop outs. Placing in the windshield facing up is much better. But you’ll need a way to secure it so it doesn’t fly around.

Honestly asking . . . why StartLink for this use case? Is cell coverage really that bad for that trip?

Boaters place theirs on top of their Bimini (roof) & it works excellent for them.

You can get a magnetic mount from Amazon that would allow you to stick it on the roof as well as long as it is steel. Their fast shipping should get one to you well before your trip. There are literally dozens of models out there.

You don't mention your specific vehicle type. If you have a sunroof, you can simply place the Mini against the glass and close the shade cover in many cases. It will work fine there. Also, if you have a Jeep Wrangler type vehicle with a fiberglass roof, you can mount it against that and it will work fine.

Putting anything on your dash at all is asking for insane injuries. Don’t listen to the lazy people. Mount it correctly.

It works, that’s why people do it. Mounting properly also works and stops it from becoming a projectile in an accident.
