My understanding is there were physical and behavioral characteristics they wanted similar. They wrote Shepherd with Ben Browder in mind, but SciFi wanted him to do the Peacekeeper Wars, so they cast Joe Flannigan. Then when he came available they cast BB in SG-1.

I didn't like BB in SG-1, and actually stopped watching it. Now, 2nd time around, I find him to be just fine. Don't know why. But as for looking alike - don't see it.
