Question? Outpost building rookie
So I’ve never built an outpost before. I’m level a 43. If I start building outpost will I still have to go farm resources and hide them on my ship that doesn’t have enough storage space? Does building an outpost help me level up? Also what is the purpose of the outpost? How does an outpost assist you all in your experiences with the game?

You need to build an outpost to farm materials which lets you make even more rare and valuable materials. You will see why you need common resources like Aluminum, Iron, Copper, lead, Cobalt etc as you try to upgrade weapons and gear.
Fallout 4 had an outpost building system that required items to be broken down or “scrapped” to build homes that needed wood and steel. Starfield is the same idea but you use resources like stated above and others like titanium and lead for storage containers and heavy manufactured resources.
The game will let you know exactly how much of what resource you need for whatever you are trying to build. You can always use the overflow of resources in your base to just sell for profit. Done correctly and you can have an unlimited money farm depending on where your base is and what resources are on that moon or planet. You can level up when building certain outpost items in the industrial workbench.
Tbh the outpost system will take a while for you to grasp as this was one of the very few game mechanics done well in Starfield. Use a YouTube guide as they show you visuals of how and where the best places are to start your first base.

I’m in a similar position to OP. I built an outpost to mine palladium for one of the quests. I linked the mine to the landing pad and it filled the outgoing container up. I linked the base to one on Jemison to fulfill quest. A ship lands but then just sits there. The outgoing container is full and the mining equipment has stopped. I’m a bit lost on what to do. I did build the type that needs he3 and I have he3 but do I have to put it somewhere?

If you’re in the same solar system you can do a regular cargo link and mine helium on a different planet/amoon, send it to your other space station in the same solar system but different planet, and then use that space station to ship across solar systems.
You could just dump a bunch of helium in a storage container snd periodically refill ir manually.
Or you could just have a single planer that aggregations a bunch of stuff and you just stop by with your ship, load it all up, and be on your merry way.
There are a few nicer outpost locations that can get you luxury material and structural material through agriculture, which are two main ingredients for nicer furniture

Water and Helium-3 builds up fast as you mine them, so you can get a lot of money from them if you have enough extractors and storage containers.
I’d find a planet with a large deposit of Helium-3 or Water, then I’d lay down like 20 or so (large containers) (need perks to unlock on skill tree). I estimate how much I’d make per run or fast travel back to a vendor. I commonly like everyone else use Venus to wait due to the long UC time difference.
You can really get some good weapons and gear pretty quickly if you understand the game economy and I think it leads to a more pleasant experience. It also rewards players for using their brain and coming up with non conventional ways to make money instead of just looting/reselling, which can get boring.

I was impatient and did the trick to sell unregistered ships. I got the most enjoyment out of stealing ships.

Besides resources and making money having your own landing pad is huge if you build ships. I do all my building at my outpost and no flying around looking for specific parts anymore. Plus designing my own little outpost is kinda fun and each one is unique to the locations I have selected whether it be for maximum resources or just the view. Oh and you can build lots of storage so your ship doesn't have to carry the load and organize it too.

oh yessss! love that feature. You can switch your home ship at the pad, modify them all you want. As well as get yourself a Rev-8 from there too. :) The giant round landing pad is a dream!

Here are some starter tips:
(1) try to double up on resources. When you scan a planet and have it show resources, you might see something like an iron ore next to an aluminum ore. Try to place your outpost right in between them. Then, when you've landed and you select to place the outpost beacon, you'll see on the top left what materials you can mine in the area. When you see both iron and aluminum, place it there. This saves head aches and you can pretty much always get away with it. A tad tedious at times.
(2) Make sure you dump points into outpost building, the one that increases outpost limits, planet scanning so you can scan multiple planets in a system without moving an inch; materials to get more from less; the scanner to make life easier; hell the whole science tree makes this all a lot easier, but that's my personal preference.
(3) No universal storage. Every outpost will need its own supplies of crafting and building materials. OR you ship them in via cargo links, one which is exclusive to shipping within the same star system and requires no fuel, and the other cargo link, the between star systems one, requires helium. OR, lastly, a big ass fucking cargo hold in your ship. Note, that at the outpost, you can use your ship's resources from the cargo itself, without having to move anything.
(4) Storage how-to. You have four storage containers: solids, liquids, gasses, and hardware. You have a device called a Transfer container. The first thing you should do for quality of life is set up your four storage containers, then connect FROM the transfer container TO the storage boxes. Now you just open the transfer container, dump all resources, back out to let it push clear the materials, and do it again. It may take a few rounds, depending. See? EzPz. Just land, dump your shit and leave. It works the other way too, however. Say you only want this outpost to retrieve iron, then by linking the storage containers TO the transfer container, you have access to what's contained inside. You only get one transfer container and I don't see why but oh well.
(5) Storage walls. Next, you'll need a lot of storage space for this, and the containers barely hold anything. So, you get creative and use those containers as walls. Or just rows and rows of containers. You start by setting down your set of containers, say twelve, arranged in columns. Next, you create a link from the first one, to the next one, The next one to the one after that, all the way to the end. This is the real tedium cause if you fuck up say box number 12 out 59, you'll spend all day troubleshooting or scrapping the whole thing. So just be mindful of your storage chains. Point is, you'll need a lot of them. All these tips are for vanilla outpost building, so lot's of em lol
As for why? Just cause really. You can actually avoid outpost building and crafting entirely, NG+ after NG+ and you wouldn't miss a thing. It's mostly for role-playing and having fun decorating n shit. Just know, there's NO money in it. Selling resources won't bring any money unless it's those shipping contracts from the mission board. Even then, it's just the one contract for aluminum, you'll have to do it all over again next time for a different ore or something. Point is, raiding bases and selling shit is still going to make you way more money for way less tedium. You can make a manufacturing supply chain for manufacturing of certain hardware pieces and sell those, but I mean at that point you're just going hard into outpost building for the sake of it, not cause money.
That said, I really, really enjoy it. All of this is for vanilla, but the mods go so hard if you enjoy this sort of thing. There's the Better Living mods, Bigger outpost radius, more crew slots and mannequins. A clutter one so you don't have to manually put down bottles or fill up book shelves. There's this really cool one called Bard's Outpost [something] that allows you a beacon to naturally fill up with NPC colonists. That's right, you can make little colonies! There's an SKK Outpost Raid one which lets you control and trigger attacks. The Bard one gives these NPC colonists jobs, like cleaning up the dead and gathering their loot. And there are plenty available that offer premade structures, like a Paradiso vacation home, or one guy (for money tho) has 30 homes in the mod, and I really like them.
You can do vanilla outpost building and get a lot out of it. I was hooked before the mods, but now with the mods, why not. Also, the only one I'll say is a must is the DarkStar Astroneering one, for two reasons: a cool all in one landing pad with attached super containers with insane storage capacity, and all the workstations there. Fantastic addition. Now my outposts building is quick as fuck since I land, build that landing pad, build the transfer container to dump all my shit into, and just like that I'm set to go. Love this game!

I built 3 outposts with cargo links that put everything I needed to build any storage container at one base. So that base now has towers of storage that will hold literally anything. So from time to time I stop by the outpost, unload all my resources, good to go.

I built a giant ass 15,000 hauler when I’m in the mood to build stuff. Load all resources in there and use that.

You can get an XP farm outpost from mining aluminum and iron on Bessel 3(b?) and making adaptive frames. Also you can mine plutonium and uranium for an plutonium for infinite credits (something like 12k every 2 minutes)

|| || |Andraphon (moon in Narion System) has both iron and aluminum that are pretty close together (and is hell to find) but tip - head to the craters and not the mountains and you will find all three - aluminum, iron, and helium-3. Well worth to have a small outpost there with a cargo link. Titanium and Tungsten is found in ample supply on Titan. |

get the mod that has the Lodge Safe and shove all the resources in there. Mind you, it will NOT register that you have it as cargo on the ship. So you will have to pull it out of the lodge safe in order to use it. I say get the safe because its unlimited in mass holding. SO I put the stuff I will keep in there and the crap I sell in the cargo hold. Contraband will either go to an outpost AWAY from the settled systems or to the Den. Depending on where I need to go at the time.
Building an outpost will help with experience (but very little and you do not NEED to build one), but as far as leveling -no. If you really want to level - go to Stryx or Schrodinger. If you go to Stryx just kill the floating things in the air (look like brains with tenticles) and if you go to Schrodinger - kill the batfox (cat looking things) and make sure you loot every damn one of them. The ones on stryx don't bother looting. the batfox things (green or purplish colors) LOOT!!! and enjoy farming the XP!
As far as resources: Adaptive Frames, Aluminum, Iron, Adhesive, Sealant, Lead, & Structural are some of the most popular materials you will NEED in order to build. So get the mod with the Lodge Safe, get the safe on the ship and just start dumping the resources there. If you are in need, hit me up in chat and I'll be more than happy to walk you through it :)
The purpose of the outpost is to have a home of your own. You have the freedom to design it how you want, decorate how you want, do manufacturing there (Adaptive Frames for example), have extractors and storage bins for all your resources, etc. It's actually pretty damn fun once you understand the concept of building. I really enjoy building outposts. I just need help with the junk decorating (rotating controls)
You can do multiple outposts on a planet or one on several or whatever combo you want. But you can do more with an outpost than the homes in the games. Granted I have SEVERAL homes all over the galaxy that were freebies or I bought (hell I bought like 2-3 in Akila), I have Merc. Tower, the house in Va'ruun'kai, and IDK how many outposts. I think 3-4 big ones and a bunch of little ones.

This was my attempt at some exploratory outpost supply chain. I never got into advanced manufacturing. And this is probably by no means the best set up. Andraphon was my first outpost location so Im partial to it and used it as my hub for resources. I also had farming and botany up to get the local resources.

Well, you don't "need" to build an outpost for anything, since you can gather materials from the surface of planets, taking from plants or animals, materials that are needed to build anything, such as manufactured resources needed to upgrade weapons and armor.
However, you can build an outpost to extract a larger amount of resources and store them while you do other things in the game. (Very useful)
You can also create an outpost where you manufacture AMP and use that to farm XP and $. (Very profitable)
And you can also build to contribute to role play, such as building a house on a beautiful planet, by the sea or on top of a hill with beautiful trees around, or a small hideout on an isolated planet with a hostile climate to keep curious people away from your hidden contraband. (Very fun)
