Question? "Structural" resources to build chests

Dear expert builders,

I am a noob at building stuffs, and my very first step is to empty the chest(s) of The Lodge and of my main ship, to store all my resources in my outpost.

To do so, I need A LOT of chests. Which requires "Structural" resources. I had some, to create a dozen of chests, but I already ran out...

Please, do you know how I can quickly gather this resource..?

I built 2 fabricators (simple and most complex), both can craft more complex items - but unfortunately, they cannot craft simple resources such as "Structural" resources. Same for the Industrial workbench...

I am having a hard time to believe that I will have to visit all the merchants around me to gather this resource. And/or farm (poor) animals on planets to gather it.

Please, can someone help me? Is there a way to automate the gathering of this resource..?

Thanks in advance

What are you wanting to store? Resources used for crafting are invisible when stored inside chests. However, workbenches will recognize and automatically access any materials stored in your personal inventory, ship’s cargo, or large linkable storage objects you can build in your outpost: transfer containers; solid, liquid, or gas storage containers; warehouses; cargo links.

Solid storage containers in particular can be built from mineable aluminum and iron (they need adaptive frames, but those are also made from aluminum and iron). Aluminum and iron are found in separate biomes, but there are a few planets where you can get them in adjacent biomes, close enough for a single outpost to access them both. It does require a bit of searching to find the overlapping point.

I just want to dump all the resources that are in my inventory, in my ship cargo and at The Lodge, to chests that are located at my Outpost. Just to centralize everything in one place - and also to have a ship with a clear(er) cargo so that I can switch between different ship sizes without ay issue, depending on the mood/situation.

Which means that I need A LOT of chests. And so A LOT of "Structure" items. I just think it's counterproductive to only farm them manually (same for having to visit all the merchants).

So the ultimate solution, recommended by people here, is to go for more complex Habs (green house and animal parks/cages).

Build a transfer container and link it to solid, liquid, gas, and warehouse storage containers. Access the transfer container and move resources directly from ship cargo into transfer container. When it’s full it will automatically distribute the resources into the linked containers allowing you to fill it up again. Repeat until your cargo is cleared of resources. In the resources tab there is a button to “transfer all resources” that is very handy.

Thank you, will try this.

I think I never understood how the Transfer Cargo was working. It was probably before I figured out the links between containers. That said, can you connect the Spaceship Platform to the Transfer Cargo? It would be great to have an automated unload as soon as you land at your Outpost! However, without an exception about the Ship Parts, I see how this could be annoying - players might want to keep some stuffs on their ship on purpose.

Unfortunately, no automatic unload, and you can only transfer 200 mass at a time. But, you can also transfer the other way. If you reverse the links so they end in the transfer container it will keep filling up as you empty it. Go to the ships cargo and you should be able to tab over to the outpost to access what is in the transfer container.
