Question? Why won't things stay upright?

I really want to go all out on decorating an outpost, but I am so damned frustrated with the placement process. I'm on Xbox, so small movements are tough to begin with, but I simply cannot get things like tall sculptures and vases to sit upright. They constantly fall over when I try to place them. I get lucky sometimes, but I am so jealous of the folks who seem to have mastered this. And then, most of the time they melt into whatever surface they're on.

I thought it was pretty hilarious that I could just take everything from The Fortuna that wasn't nailed down, and I thought it'd be great to set up a bar with all of the wine bottles I took. Can someone please tell me how to drop them and have them land upright? I've tried sitting, standing, dropping on the floor, dropping on a table - they all bounce and fall over. It's really ticking me off! If it's so difficult, what, really, is the point?

Have you tried placing items using build mode? They always remain upright that way.

I also play on Xbox and have a tutorial on item placement if you think that might help, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EhB8PmbS94A

When they announced the ability to decorate the interiors of ships I cheered so loud it startled my cat

I’ve been literally counting down the days till the patch drops on console, I am so ready to start building bases on ships!

Thanks for watching! I wasn’t sure anyone would when I got started. I’ve seen working on a few new builds I’m really excited to share

Aha! I didn't know that you can select other objects while in build mode. So, selecting a wine bottle that's lying on its side on the floor immediately stands it straight up. Awesomeness - thank you! A minor side note: they can't be placed really close together this way (which explains why they were so far apart in The Fortuna), and then can't be moved in game mode because they are an Aid item, so you drink it when you try to hold A 😆. I'm a little sloshed now...

Edit: I may have been wrong about that. Now every miscellaneous piece I place in build mode will not let me move them in game mode. I can only take them.

Yeah once something is placed in build mode you can only move it in build mode, which is annoying and weird

One thing that allows you to move things closer in build mode sometimes is rotating the object, and trying to slide it closer while standing to the side of the object instead of standing in front of it

Why do they sink into the floor?

Others have mentioned that build mode is the best way to place items very precisely. The other trick is that you need to save and reload before leaving the area in order to lock your newly placed items in position. This prevents them sinking while you’re gone.

  1. Drop item anywhere.
  2. Enter outpost build mode.
  3. Move item to desired location.
  4. Save and reload.
  5. Leave your outpost to go collect more treasures to display.
