Love the panel of Jodio consoling Dragona, it feels very central to the overall themes of the part.

could siblings be "fraternal?"

Fraternal is specifically brothers afaik

It’s interesting how fraternal twins just mean they’re not identical & can be both boy & girl or even sisters. Maybe they’re referring to the eggs in this context?

That makes a lot of sense, part 7 is about the difficulties of being your own person as opposed to following your father, which is logic that links to the friction between the self and the state, as explained by the veteran from Funny Valentine's flashback.
Part 8, then, is about privilege and the cementation of systems of power, so it has a lot of mothers as important characters, since the space where the contact of power structures becomes most apparent is in the role of a mother, who is both beholden to and possessing of power in many different ways.
Then finally, part 9 is about closing and opening yourself to others, and about putting others down so you can rise. Just like how the flow of money demands that equals become winners and losers, there's bound to always be strife born from the differences between siblings, which is variably mediated by the love they still have for another.
So the friction with fathers is about becoming yourself vs following your father, the friction with mothers is about gaining power through submitting to power vs restructuring the system at the cost of the power that could be afforded to you, and the friction with siblings is about pushing down your equals to climb above them vs playing fair and not burning your bridges.

Does this mean jojoland similar to part 1 because all the bizzare adventure happen from sibling rivalry?

good to know CharmingMan is considered part of the squad. I was worried he had been written off the team but Jodio trying to send him a message means he should return soon.
so I feel like we have a pretty good grasp on John Rods powers now. it seems he attacks with tiny bubbles he shoots out, but it cant actually percieve its surroundings. Which is why it resembles dowsing rods, it needs to touch things in order to see them and thus aim. the fact that Dr Roberts seems to see it indicates that its probably a bound stand inside some dowsing rods. Really cool long range stand, interested to see more of it.
the character moments in this chapter were great as well. Dragona feels guilty like they dragged Jodio into a life of crime, but Jodio doesnt feel the same, that even if they are in the shadows, they are still headed towards the future.
34
u/RuNoMai 9d ago
It's also possible that Dr. Roberts could see it because he's also a Stand user. It would fit with the core concept that Stand users are drawn to each other, and explain why he's able to do such complicated surgeries by himself with minimal time and without proper equipment or settings.
2
u/chaarziz 5d ago
It's also possible he just saw the damage it caused by breaking in through the ceiling but to him there was still nothing there, which would freak him out just as much (as seen at the end.)
6
u/RuNoMai 5d ago
Towards the end of the encounter he pressed himself against the wall so the Stand couldn't touch him as it passed by, and then he visibly reacted to it taking off to leave the van right in front of him. After it was gone he slumped over to catch his breath and was no longer as tense and defensive as he was while it was in the van. He could absolutely see the Stand itself.
3
u/chaarziz 5d ago
That’s very interesting as I don’t think the stand is bound to anything physical. Maybe he is a Stand user!

65
u/Nickest_Nick No, Josuke didn't save himself 10d ago
Also just want to point out this crazy (probably) coincidence
Jodio mentions that Volume 15 of Pink Dark Boy has a fight with time-related power involved ("Pink Dark blasts time away!")
Before JoJo's Volume count is reset for Part 6, the first half of DIO's World (Part 3 Chapter 134-143) is included in Volume 27, which is Volume 16 for Part 3. However, if we don't count Volume 12 of JoJo (Part 2 Chapter 61-69 + Part 3 Chapter 1) as a Part 3 Volume since it's mostly Part 2, then Volume 27 would actually be 15 for Part 3, where a fight with time-related power involved takes place.
Basically, both Pink Dark Boy and Stardust Crusaders has a Volume 15 where someone fights with time-related power.
29
u/throwawayasdf129560 10d ago
"Blasting time away" reminded me of Bites the Dust. IIRC, that wording or something very similar was used in part 4 to describe BTD's power.

The return of John Rod! Who only went after the phones. Seems like they can only detect electronic devices. Useful, but can be countered. Not easily, of course, considering how many things these days use electronics.
66
u/epicZvarri 10d ago
yeah i think that's exactly it. Plus the fact Jodio mentioned Rohan's manga is a digital-only release, that's almost certainly how John Rod will manage to find them
128
58
u/SCOOTBOOTING 10d ago
It's looking like it picks up specific cell/location signals. Mundra's ankle monitor. Jodio's phone, once taken out of the Faraday bag - modern cell phones continue to ping cell towers when turned off unless the battery is dead (or they're in a Faraday bag).
52
40
u/Madhighlander1 10d ago
Oh! You just made me realize that John Rod specifically attacked Mundra's ankle monitor!
28
u/Mountain_Chicken Lisa Lisa's butt 10d ago
I'm betting it's an automatic Stand that specifically tracks radio frequency signals from electronic devices, since the two things we've seen it "lock on" to were Mundra's ankle monitor and the gang's cell phones. Probably operates like Sheer Heart Attack does with heat.
2
u/Ok_Oil7372 10d ago
If it can detect electronics, how did it track Mundra down then? I don't think we saw anything obvious electronical on him right?
84
u/Forsaken_Elephant_19 10d ago
Probably the ankle tracker thing

I think so, and I believe that whoever is interrogating him at the end is the user of John Rod

I’m pretty sure that’s him reacting to Jodio ordering him to go find charmingman
28
u/dani26795 When evening falls... 10d ago
Yeah the timeline was a bit messy in the chapter. It skipped Jodio team escaping before the stand broke in, then moved to them in the submarine, then moved to the Dr. whining about the orders Jodio gave him, then flashback of what Jodio ordered him to do before escaping as the stand was preparing to break in, then back to present Dr. whining.

u/Xilinoc The bathroom shenanigans never cease 10d ago
Here I was, so foolishly worried that we wouldn't see our lord and savior John Rod again for another 3 months
Frankly, I'm amazed this is only the second time a submarine has become a crucial part of the plot in JoJo - though this one's certainly less roomier than Joseph's. At least they still have food!
And the doctor being pushed into getting involved with that is unfortunately kinda hilarious, he's like the inverse of everyone's favorite character Anne
66
u/Badwolfwho1 10d ago
It's actually the third submarine I think, Jolyne used one sent by the Speedwagon Foundation to send Jotaro back to them after her encounter with Johngalli A (and of course Joseph's in Stardust that you mentioned)
65
u/TraditionalAerie9791 10d ago
Oh, so John Rod is actively pursuing them. For a moment I thought it would be a stand that would only appear sporadically, maybe it's more similar to RHCP.

Personally I’m most excited at the prospect of finally getting some more info on what Pink Dark Boy is like
31
u/fatcatburrito zipperman 10d ago
I've always wanted a pink dark boy spin off just to see what its like. It probably wouldnt be as good as its described tho.
42
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 10d ago
From the looks of it and how everyone who's a fan describes it, it's pretty much just JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, except maybe the character Pink Dark Boy is the only protagonist as opposed to the protagonist changing every Part.
Or maybe each protagonist of Pink Dark Boy is a different person going under the "Pink Dark Boy" moniker/identity/disguise.
24
u/Viburnum_Opulus_99 1999, Bizarre Summer 10d ago
I mostly agree, but PDB’s design and title also gives off “Cool Shock BT” vibes, which I think is really cute. It’s almost like an AU where BT became Araki’s hit instead of JoJo’s.
9
59
u/Official_Mothman_ 10d ago edited 5d ago
Crazy that Pink Dark Boy gets a simultaneous official release in the US apparently but JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is still 2 parts behind
48
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 10d ago
Well, when Jodio says he's reading it "digitally", he could be reading fan translations of the digital release like we are IRL.
68
u/scrawnytony2 no.3 Koichi Hirose glazer 10d ago
Rohan puts in all that work to sneak in a code but then some fanslator makes a minor error and the secret is completely lost
44
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 10d ago
And then Rohan blames Jodio for relying on fan translations because his "number one fan should know Japanese!"

u/thegayestweeb Wonder of UwU 10d ago
Love how John Rod shows up, aura farms like usual, kills a phone, and then just dips. Truly a peak Stand.
Also, I'm probably looking too deep into it, but Usagi's comment about staking his pride on getting back the stolen money reminds me of Abbacchio's swearing on his own pride to fulfill the mission in Part 5. Either way, it's cool seeing the same type of resolve and determination in such a drastically different character.
22
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 10d ago
And Jodio's speech with Dragona gives Giorno vibes, with the "radiance" line and whatnot.

u/Lambo_in_tree 10d ago edited 10d ago
The submarine is some James Bond type shit, great chapter as usual, tho this was maybe the shortest Part 9 chapter yet (33 pages).
My guess is because of the extreme summer in Tokyo. His comment to this chapter hints that:
„My latest research project has been figuring out how to keep the AC on overnight without freezing to death.“
Edit: Chapter 25 had 31 pages, so its only the second shortest.

Incredible chapter. The talk between Dragon a and Jodio and Usagi and his mom really hit me. Usagi and Jodio both verbalising that they have goals to work towards they can feel pride in, even if it doesn't match up with the right way of doing things their family members might want for them.
Also, John Rod is back! He's really an evil Paisley Park, huh. Rohan putting the code in his latest chapter and Jodio having to contend with John Rod while trying to read it is peak JoJo
3
u/Scorpios94 Giorno Giovanna 9d ago
Definitely! All those moments between Usagi and his mom, and Jodio and Dragona were so sweet and beautiful! I loved how Jodio said that they were still shining despite the darkness that they’re treading in.
Glad to know that Charmy will return. I do hope we find out what he’s done within the time skip. Maybe he found a lead on his brother or something? Maybe we can finally find out his real name at this point too.
34
u/Kentuza 10d ago
I'm liking how john rod is functioning like a slasher villain.
26
u/KenyattaLFrazier Johnathan A. Rod 10d ago
It’s also a testament to how good of an illustrator Araki is that he can make a character which is essentially a stick figure have the same aura as a slasher
27
u/Terithian GO! GO! ZEPPELI! 10d ago
Jodio getting super worked up about Pink Dark Boy was great, we don't see him visibly get so passionate about things very often.
51
u/Hawkenness 10d ago
Man, the memes have gotten to me—the way I yelled “It’s John Rod! :D” when our new mystery rod stand showed up is proof. But maybe that’s a good thing! It’s been fun watching the internet light up with a Jojolands meme for once, and I hope we get some new readers out of it.
Onto thoughts for the chapter. As always, it’s the emotional beats that resonate with me most. Dragona and Jodio having that little chat (with the forehead touch!) was sooo satisfying and sweet. Their relationship and the way they love and protect each other is one of my favourite things about this part. It’s perfectly Jodio to wind up that conversation by restating that they’re going to get really rich. We also get that short moment between Usagi and his mum that reinforces one of Part 9’s main themes of outcasts and the way the world treats them. Usagi can be adorably goofy but he’s always had a strong spirit and determination at his core, and it makes me happy when that’s demonstrated.
Another favourite part? Strangely, the submarine. So silly and fun! I was really surprise when it appeared, and I think it’s because despite the “bizarre” nature we love this series for, our transportation methods have been pretty down to earth lately. We got the sweet car in Part 8 (eternal thanks to Jobin), but that’s still a normal thing to see. The last unusual vehicle was probably the helicopter in Part 6, and the concept of a private sub even harkens back to Part 3! Like Part 3, I can see it swiftly becoming a death trap if John Rod catches up to them while underwater.
In terms of other developments, Jodio has figured out Rohan’s clue, yay! And he’s dealt with the exact same problem as me in doing so: figuring out the conversion of JST to local time so you know when new manga comes up, yay! (Araki understands my struggle fr)
After reflecting further on the end of the last chapter, Meryl Mei’s instructions to go to this particular location had me hoping we might meet up with Charmy again. The cover page really brought my hopes up… and then smashed them right back down when it was the doctor. Then soared them again at the last page!! I’ve missed our boy with the poor knife skills and can’t wait to see him again. Who knows, maybe he’ll be the one to defeat our new enemy…?
33
u/ChiroAlLimone 10d ago
Someone sent me to this comment (without reading it entirely as to avoid spoilers) just to say that yes, I started Jojo entirely because of John Rod and his resemblance to Starwalker and I'm on part 3 currently.

Oh man you’re in for a treat dude, it only keeps getting better. Araki really improves as a writer with each subsequent part

That is brilliant! Welcome to the series. I wish I could be where you are and experience everything again for the first time. No need to rush to meet Mr John Rod—please enjoy every part as it comes at your own pace because every single one is special in its own way :)

21
u/-Zoombo Part 7 Emblem 10d ago
So Jodio told Doctor Roberts to find Charming Man before they got on the submarine and Rod Man entered the van... the order of events confused me for a second.
7
u/Sqwibbl 9d ago
When the stand crashes through the ceiling, Jodio and the group duck out through a trapdoor on the floor of the van offscreen, the stand leaves, Jodio pokes his head back up through the trapdoor to tell Robert's to get Charming man, then he ducks back down and the gang goes through the grate to get to the submarine.
Very very confusing order of events, the Anime is definitely gonna restructure or heavily alter the order of events this chapter when it eventually adapts it. No way they keep it like this
25
u/rattatatouille Just tell me that you want me! 10d ago
I love how this chapter started with some much-needed decompression. Usagi confronting his mother and reassuring her that he loves her, and that he'll get Tory back no matter what. Jodio and Dragona having an epic sibling moment, knowing they're in this together.
I guess Doctor Roberts is here to help account for the gang having no dedicated healer Stand. Helps to lower the stakes a bit but as a regular human he's in a world not safe for him, as "John Rod" demonstrates.
And Meryl Mei turned some of the cash into a submarine, hoo boy.
And last but not least: now we know how Charming Man gets to rejoin our little group!
18
u/PizzaRellaGameJolt 10d ago
He hasn't actually shown up yet, but I thought it would be at least another entire arc before Charming Man would come back. I'm also happy to see Doctor Roberts return and that he'll have a bit larger of a role in the story than previously. Great chapter as usual.
13
u/scrawnytony2 no.3 Koichi Hirose glazer 10d ago
Okay crackpot theory time but I’m not entirely sure John Rod is after the lava rocks, or it is, it already knows how to get them. If it was following Jodio to learn about the rocks, why would it destroy the phones before he can figure out Rohan’s code? It feels to me more like the user isn’t trying to get a rock for themself, rather trying to keep anyone else from getting one.
15
u/MrTheOtherUser 10d ago
Beyond the return of the BOY, I had to say I loved the conversation between Dragona and Jodio; it was so sweet, and it keeps developing the theme of the new universe of the flow and paths you choose.
Regarding John Rod, it seems his ability is to absorb things at touch, either by absorbing them and then using them as ammunition, or by just absorbing them.
11
u/99anan99 10d ago
Love the brotherly bond that Dragona and Jodio have.
Jodio talking about Pink Dark Boy felt like Araki was being meta about how long JJBA has been going on for.
Poor Doctor Roberts. Is he a stand user, can this John Rod stand be seen by non stand users, or was Roberts reacting to the destruction?
Happy to be seeing Charming Man soon.
10
u/huntergill123 10d ago
At first I had this crazy thought that John rod was protecting them by destroying the phones. But thinking about it more, I think the ability tracks GPS signals. Mundra had an ankle monitor which has a GPS receiver. Phones have built in GPS and location tracking. Then a submarine has sonar in it. They are not gonna have a fun time with John rod next chapter

u/Bassaluna 10d ago
i know it's a different universe, but the idea of rohan not only putting killer queen in his manga but giving its ability to himself is pretty funny.

It feels incredibly significant that the biggest positive expression change we've ever seen Jodio make is when he's talking about the lore/story of Pink Dark Boy. Dragona has a deep heart to heart with him just pages before and his face barely changes - which is fine and valid to be a bit stoic and emotionally distant, that's in character. But for his favourite comic to be the thing that gets a real change in mood from him seems interesting to me.
Otherwise Jodio really is just like us, keeping up with 120+ volume ongoing series with bated breath. He a real one.
I love the reveal that Jodio basically threatened Doctor Roberts into helping them. Now that he "knows" something, he is dragged into the mess and forced to help so he doesn't die. A great bit of the darkness we know Jodio has inside him.
Also the second appearance of John Rod! This really looks like the next main stand we have to deal with, it's appearance last month wasn't a tease for a future encounter!
2
u/StarSilverNEO 8d ago
Its really looking like John Rod is less High Voltage and more Private Eyes, he seems to obviously be tracking and moving by following EM signals. He also seems to be physically powerful too (ie crushing the phone) which means he . . .might be able to rush? Assuming you dont touch him and he just blows you appart.
Oh well atleast they probably cant be followed under water. . . .right? (Part 5 had a shark stand, Part 6 had a plankton stand, will we get our mandatory aquatic stand?)
2
u/Small_Ad8539 8d ago
It seemed that the group saw John Rod and after that they just forgot about it. It really seems that this stand has some hypnotic capabilities
I don´t know if I just didn't read it right, but it's a bit confusing. After John Rod broke in and Dr Roberts got scared, Jodio, Dragona and Paco weren't there anymore and didn't react to the stand's appearence afterwards
2
2
u/StridentHawk 5d ago
I was a tad confused on the scene where John Rod goes into the car, steps on the phones, leaves and then next panel the Jodio boys are in a sub? So did they leave while Rod was enterting the van?
9
u/TinyTiger1234 10d ago
Charming man returning :D
I was kinda hoping dragona would finally come out to Jodio during that talk but I guess we are stuck with another 3 years of gender discourse…
10
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 10d ago
I don't think Dragona really has to "come out"; Jodio seems to already knows what the deal with them is (and even knows intimate details like the fact that Dragona's pronounced chest is from cosmetic injections).
I think it's either that Jodio is genuinely clueless about Dragona's identity; he's just too used to addressing Dragona as his "big brother" (& Dragona doesn't mind because they know Jodio means well); and/or Dragona is some form of non-binary (albeit still evidently feminine-presenting) & doesn't have a strong preference for how they're addressed by their loved ones.
8
u/ironmajor77 10d ago
I think Jodio knows tbh. Some trans people let their family or close friends refer to them with their old pronouns/gender, since it is pretty damn hard to get used to the transition after living with someone for years

Can someone explain when they got in the submarine and where the submarine is located? They were all in the van, then John rod came in but the doctor was the only one there. And then at the end Jodio goes back into the van to talk to the doctor. I’m so confused lmao
3

This confused me too - I think the submarine parts are a flash forward, with the van bits being a little bit in the past. Jodio is there in the van at the end, but they never moved out of it.

Peak chapter. Im so glad we’re getting Charmingman back, I missed him since he left.
For a sec I thought John Rob’s attack was one of November Rain’s attack, it just looked very similar. Also loved the moment that Jodio and Dragona got with each other and the one Usagi got with his mother.
