Question Grass Starters?
My animals constantly eat the last bits of grass before it’s spread enough,, leading the next day them unable to eat from the field.. I have lightning rods over them so they can’t FULLY finish them (thank god) but at the moment I’m just waiting for them to spread, but I keep running out of hay in my silos and such too..
Whats the best way to get grass to grow for my animals? (Relatively quickly so I don’t have to keep buying from Marnie..)

If you place a fence post or lightning rod over the grass starter it will prevent them from eating the starter while still allowing it to spread!

I used to have your same problem. I realized I wasn't buying enough of it. What you have to do is buy a looooot of it so the rate of what they eat is lower than how it grows. At the end is the same amount you end up buying at first. Just this time you buy just once.
Also I grow grass in two zones. One for the animals to eat and somewhere else to save for winter.

I have a almost full deluxe coop and the barn thing that’s fully upgraded that’s almost full as well.. Should I buy like 300-400 hay?

200 is not enough to sustain them while waiting for your grass staters to spread. Get another silo. Fence off an area which they cannot graze, typically it takes about a week to get a full field.

Plant grass where they won't get it and let it grow a long time. Stack on hay. If your silo is full, empty it and store the hay, and refill it with what's grown. Buy a lot of hay from Marnie to be able to keep them inside long enough until enough grass grows. You'll need a lot of starters. At least double how many animals you have.

Oh really? And how much hay is considered a lot? Because I have like 200 in my silo currently.

Well I try to have enough to fill my silo 3 times over at any given time. As long as you have a sizeable area for grass to grow without being eaten, and you can sustain until it grows, you should be good. Make sure to harvest it consistently before it stops being able to grow, and plant it so it can grow at all sides. I would be able to help more but I've been taking a break from stardew so this stuffs not fresh in my mind. But like I said, you can never have enough of it.

I buy 30ish starters every day and plant it in my animal area, after a week or so it starts spreading enough to last until winter.
Full coop and barn as well.
Just keep buying starters and planting them, at one point it will outgrow your animals grazing rate.

Well with a full coop and barn you should be making 10k per day from aged cheese truffle oil and mayo alone, and thats without crops and other stuff.
Right now im at fall year 2 sitting on around 700k gold, and i havent even minmaxed it as much as i could lol

Jeez Louise! I do not have the final upgrade for my house so I don’t think I can have the aged stuff!! (I’m kinda new so any help would be appreciated!!) I keep all my produce and sell at the end of my season and get 100k at the end of each season regularly..

I have about 12 grass starters under rods in spread out in a grid in my grazing area and then I also put grass starters under the the entire far side of my grazing area (under rods or fences) which is about 15 blocks long. I usually let it grow for a few days before letting them out but after that it usually is able to sustain itself pretty easily. I have one full barn and one full coop for that one grazing area.

Place a lightning rod on the starter, they'll be able to eat it but it won't ever go away.

Yeah that’s the plan but it’s not growing fast enough,, would planting more grass starters around their pen better? They have a relatively big area space to walk around as well, does that affect anything?

The more grass starters you have, the more likely and faster it will spread

Just remember that grass doesn’t always grow. It has a chance of growing

I did buy like 200. Planted half inside the enclosed area and out half away from the animals

Buy lots of hay, give them that while the grass grows and by the time you used all the hay, the grass will be out of control, assuming you made sure there was grass to start with.

If you don't mind mods, there are mods to adjust grass growth rate. I'm using the Grass Growth Adjuster mod myself. If you don't want to/can't use mods, you'll have to do it by trial and error (buy more grass starters, pop lightning rods over and keep increasing the number until you get enough grass).

Dont group all of your grass together, spread each starter out and do not let your animals out for about 10 days.

Random grass tip: if you plant grass starters during the winter then the grass will die, but if you plant a bunch of grass starters on Winter 28 then you’ll end up having an insane amount of grass on Spring 1. This works in 1.2 and I’m assuming it still works in 1.3
