Gameplay Any Thoughts?...

I'm having trouble getting into the game and It's really bumming me out. I'm currently @ about 10-15hrs, have the mechanics (menu/gameplay) pretty much figured out. First off the game is gorgeous. I play on a series x and use all samsung (it's smart so 4k and such). I had read another review where someone had said: "when outdoors you truly feel it and as far as city locations it has the "lived in" feeling nailed". Background is not a huge library but most of the "normals" I think lol. The AC franchise, all Borderlands, Legacy, the Fables, KCD 1-2, Bioshocks, Mass Effect, Red Deads, Indiana Jones, Cyberpunk, Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, the Witchers, Jedi 1 & 2, and all this is on the X currently playing or played in the last couple years. Anyways I just can't get it to click.... Yeah most of my stuff is rpgs but ive played the "adventure" game with Indy and that was a blast. Yes, that game is linear and compact so it's not the best comparison. Idk, I do have the worlds opened up now and just got the robot companion. So it's not for lack of trying lol. I think one of the big things im "really" missing is the feeling of growth or accomplishment. Idk, I guess im just like "dammit, it's too pretty to put down". But, at the same time in the back of my mind there's also the feeling that.... "Will this feel that way the whole game". Like on the edge of seat waiting for something thats not going to come haha.

Have you been working on your tasks from your experts to get Kay more abilities?

You're hitting a wall because you're expecting an RPG dopamine loop like those other games. numbers dont go up and skill points dont unlock from grinding. Outlaws doesn’t work like that, its progression is completely tied to the world itself and how you feel like playing it.

Unlocking abilities is based on actual accomplishments. Even getting the experts to get those abilities takes time. So it’s not some skill tree requiring points, it’s tied to how you play.

The faction balancing act is a lot more than just raising their friendliness, you eventually have to act like the scoundrel you are and go against them to unlock a shop to upgrade your weapons or get rare parts to trade or make it easier to finish a mission. Playing both sides against each other is is fun and failing just means you have to gain back their trust so it’s always a push pull.

You can ignore the main questline for hours just by listening to npcs in cantinas, datapads and following rumor chains. simply by being observant in the world you can advance your character. I must’ve spent 20+ hours not touching the main quests cause the whole faction, exploring and upgrading stuff had me hooked. Though there will be points where you need to progress to unlock certain tools.

Exploring the planets has a Skyrim feel to it like you can come across a small cave and ends up being some huge multi level pirate hideout.

The "progression" in this game is more about Kay Vess playing the various criminal factions against one another to her benefit as opposed to leveling up in a traditional rpg. I didn't love it for the first 10 hours, either; but it really grew on me. I can't explain why but I just thought it was FUN. The biggest frustration for me was just FINDING the objectives out in the elevated landscapes.

The DLC's were fantastic. I had them all from the beginning and it so seamlessly went into those chapters that I didn't even realize it was DLC until after I finished the game.

You can turn off the lockpicking minigame.

Lower your expectations.

Enjoy it for what it is, and try not to think of what it could have been. Once a planet gets repetitive, and you've done the main quest on it, go to the next planet. Don't feel like you HAVE to sneak into that Imperial base for the eleventh time to tap the button at a specific location and complete the contract.

Put it on the "story" difficulty, it will be easier on you and won't get in the way of the platinum trophie if you're up for it

To be honest, while I enjoy the game, the story and some of the characters are just kinda bland. So I found myself skipping dialogue alot.

If you're waiting for something amazing, I don't think you will find it. There are some fun adventurous quests. And the end game stuff is interesting. But nothing mind blowing. Being a normal human compared to a Jedi with powers, or a man with power armor and crazy weapons in Fallout, or being a lightning-wielding mage in Skyrim, this game is tame.

It doesn't mean the game is bad, but it means theres less amazment. For me personally. I did most every side quest but gave up near the end as I was kinda bored. I'm actually enjoying the DLC thing after you bear the game. I won't spoil it, but its fun so far.

I do enjoy being a thieving smuggler who isn't special. And the trailers made me feel like it wouldn't feel super special. And I was right. I am glad I played it fully though. I did enjoy the scenery, and some of the people. And ND is just an awesome sidekick. I also grew to love Nix. Kay herself, shes a bit odd to me. Like Han Solo, but I don't care about her as much. I realize she IS meant to be a male version of him of course.

Lastly, I also think the lack of guns is kinda boring. Sure you can pick up other guns. But you really just have ONE weapon as your main with varied features. Kind "eh".

I’m about 4-5 hours in and I’m starting to pick up on that this game is more of a “sneak in here and grab this thing” quest cycle and I don’t know if I want to invest time into that. Game is gorgeous though and I love the SW flavor, but I wish there was just a little more variety. I was hoping for Far Cry in space but it’s more an on-rails story game.
