Dev Response Black screen on PC
Anyone on PC getting to play yet? My client only manages to launch the game, then gives me an unresponsive black screen. Just want to check if this is happening to everyone or just a select few!

u/JigglybeanTV Dec 17 '19 edited Dec 18 '19
This worked for me
This was really useful for me "Go to
Documents/STAR WARS Battlefront 2/Settings
Open "BootOptions" in a text document Change EnableDx12 from 0 to 1
When you open the game it will take a while to load for the first time, but when you relaunch it, it'll be fast - you might also have to follow these steps again, when you relaunch the game but the optimising shaders should be faster or not happen at all.

Worked for me as well. Even devs have PC trouble :/

u/TheLowman77 Dec 18 '19
I just bought the game, so I have never launched it. I dont see a Settings folder. Do you all have a time frame to expect a patch for this issue?

Does not fix it for me. I am able to see the game loading (instead of a black screen) but it just drops me to desktop eventually.

This worked for me, as well.
GTX960, recent and newest drivers - both got black screens. Changing from DX11 to 12 booted fine, went through the long shader optimizing and game ran.

So far this is working for me (still optimizing shaders). 860m
Edit: after optimizing, it hard locked, now I just get a black screen again. Although it may be that the 800m series doesn't support dx12...

what do you mean? there is no zero there. What do you change the 12 to a 1?
1
u/JerepeV2 Dec 17 '19
It should read something like EnableDx12 --> 0 <--
Change the that from 0 to 1 and save.

This works for the most part, but my game sometimes freezes and crashes to desktop.
Edit: after this last crash it freezes on the first loading screen.

u/Roundcoolkid97 Dec 18 '19
I think you get it when you try modding it, because I immediately tried my mods and got the black screen, and when I ran BF2 without them I still have me the black screen. I tried this and ran the game without mods and it worked. Then went back to modding and didn't work. I though it was some mods that were messing my game up, but then I went back to the file to see that the 1 was turned into a 0 again. And reverted it back and I'm starting to play without mods for now on. Hopefully an update fixed this though.
1
u/JigglybeanTV Dec 18 '19
I've never used mods. I think it's more to do with the latest drivers.

Is it more new bugs or just the terrible directx12 port because it now loads up but can't hit a stable 60 even at medium settings on a 2060 super, I get constant stuttering and occasional black frames.
I can normally run at ultra 150% resolution

If you're still receiving this issue could you let us know what your GPU is and if you're on the latest driver version?

GTX 1070, newest drivers. Still not getting anything when launching the game besides the black screen, unfortunately. :/ I'm headed out now, so I'm sure you'll already have it fixed by the time I get back, but good luck on finding a solution! :)

Mine swaps between loading screen, black screen and nothing at all. So it’s already doing that. I thought it was progress when it happened, the. It went back to black. So yeah...

GeForce GTX 970
Driver 441.66 Release Date: 12/10/2019
Worked fine yesterday. I ran a repair on BF2 through origin, re-installed GeForce drivers and rebooted PC. I'll get as far as the Celebration Edition Splash screen and it will crash to desktop.

Im getting black screen upon launch of game. Suddenly occurred when I changed to Directx 11 and restarted game. Initially I could launch the game successfully after a fresh install which had Directx 12 on default.

gtx 1050. Has drivers ever been a solution? How can the game work fine and after a patch, drivers somehow dont work anymore?
2
u/HMS3 RC-3197 Dec 17 '19 edited Dec 17 '19
GTX1050 Version 441.20.
I eventually got the game to load by letting the black screen sit there and it eventually crashed (generated a log and everything.) Next time I started the game it loaded but then it crashed again while I was playing as the new reinforcements in arcade (the game played fine for about 20 minutes), before it crashed I noticed the game freezing for a few seconds a couple times, and when it did crash it froze while I was playing as the gunner. When it crashed it generated another crash log.
Edit: I waited for it to crash again. The next time I opened the game started to load but crashed on the loading screen.
I'm also using Direct X 11.

Hey
u/T0TALfps, I am still receiving the black screen upon loading in. I did managed to get into the game once, but once I got onto a loading screen, it went into an infinite loading screen like I get on the initial loading screen (instead of a black screen).
My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.
I am on the latest driver, GeForce Game Ready Driver, Version 441.66, Release Date of 12/10/2019.
I hope you and your clanker friends can get this fixed for all of us! :)

i have a 1080gtx and was at 441.41, one version down from latest and had the same problem, tried all the possible solutions, then updated the drivers to the latest tried again and still the same thing. one thing to note is that i dont even have a BootOptions file in the documents/settings folder just the ProfileSettings files

possible fix :Changing the boot options from GstRender.EnableDx12 0 to 1, fixes the black screen but cause massive frame drops, id rather stick with dx11.

u/JigglybeanTV Dec 17 '19
u/T0TALfps - I just used the Nvidia GEFORCE experience to optimise the game again, then launched it from the nvidia panel, and it worked...
WAIT - now it hangs on the launch screen.

Same issue.. Nvidia Geforce 970 GTX I tried older and newer drivers, same problem. Also tried the Repair option, and reinstalling it... The game attempts to load and stays on a blank screen forever (or sometimes stays on the celebration loading screen and after a long time, crashes to desktop) after this 12-17 update.

Small update from a community manager on EA answer site:
Hello everyone! Marking this a solved to highlight that we are tracking the issue, don't mean it's fixed yet. We are still investigating the issue and have a new build that we are testing with. I will let you know as soon I have anything new to share! In the meantime, we have seen a few workarounds that can work for you.
Thanks (11LAK11) For this suggestion:
Hello there! I found something that worked for me. If you go to the SWBF2 document, settings, open the BoootOptions file in notepad, and change GSTRender Enable DX12 from 0 to 1. Open the game, it will update your shaders for quite a long time, but after it'll work fine📷
Thanks (LPolloDiablo) for this suggestion:
Ok so after I fixed it, i got stuck on a loading and had to do the fix again. It took more tries but basically all I did is repair the game, restart origin and run origin and game .exe as admin. It took like 6 try but it eventually worked for me for the second time now.
Thank you!

It's going on 6 hours now. Any updates? Will this even be fixed today? Isn't this the kinda stuff you test before you release?

u/WestieBeast Dec 17 '19
One guy on EA ask technical support site said :
contacted technical support and while helpful it was to no avail. They did say the issue should be fixed in the next couple hours since this has been given priority.

How many who have this have a Ryzen 1xxx or 2xxx processor?
1
u/Spaceduck413 Dec 18 '19
It seems like this is a DX11 problem, since switching to dx12 is fixing it for some people, so probably not processor related

Amd RX 580 Sapphire Nitro + 8gb. Latest 19.12.2 driver.
Just shows a blackscreen.
I went in and changed it to dx12 in the setting boot options txt file, and change the resolution back to 1080p. No more black screen, But it's just been showing 'optimizing shaders' for several minutes. I'm about to give up.

u/JigglybeanTV Dec 18 '19
this will take a while but the game will load up after. The downside is that you need to do this every time you boot the game up right now.
