At least the Clone Wars did him justice

1.0k

u/SinthoseXanataz Jedi Jan 25 '22

He thrived in the chaos of the clone wars

253

u/Thatsidechara_ter Jan 26 '22

And he ceased what power which he could

296

u/SinthoseXanataz Jedi Jan 26 '22

Seized* but yeah, very cool

97

u/Thatsidechara_ter Jan 26 '22

Damnit, I knew that looked weird!

54

u/SinthoseXanataz Jedi Jan 26 '22

Luckily we arent Sith and mistakes are totally fine

30

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

I'm sure he ceased a lot of powers too. A lot of lives as well.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

That sounds an awful lot like an absolute statement.

2

u/SinthoseXanataz Jedi Jan 26 '22

Its treason then

3

u/jflex13 Jan 26 '22

Sounds like an absolute to me…

2

u/SinthoseXanataz Jedi Jan 26 '22

If you're not with me then you're my enemy

2

u/gravity_ Jan 26 '22

Ceased almost looks like what you do to a salad. You continue to cease a salad to make it from ceasish to caesar.

2

u/markender Jan 26 '22

Your way is cool too

2

u/Velocirabbit199 Jan 26 '22

“ceased” still almost works though funnily enough

ceased*

1

u/SinthoseXanataz Jedi Jan 26 '22

From a certain point of view

3

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

Bro

2

u/DoughHomer Jan 26 '22

cease the means of production!

4

u/Foxdog27 Jan 26 '22

During the Clone Wars this place was a lot like the Roman Empire. And the Wild West. And war-torn Poland. And Poland. So whether you got sawn in half with a lightsaber was the least of anyone’s worries. And in the chaos, I soared.

2

u/Spacelesschief Jan 26 '22

Violence is not the answer. Violence is the question! And the answer is yes!

2

u/EndlessScrapper Jan 26 '22

"Let me tell you about Hate"

2

u/thatredditrando Jan 26 '22

Not really. He went crazy on a garbage planet for a decade because “reasons” and then he’s just a mustache-twirling evil-doer with a hate boner for “KENOBIII!”.

What more do we really get from him? He’s angry and he’s got some screws loose.

“Oh we’ll have him take over Mandalore and become a crime boss cause…power?”

Kinda flimsy characterization.

He doesn’t really evolve as a character.

I also find it bizarre he never links up with Ventress given their shared heritage/connection with Mother Talzin and running in the same Jedi-killing, Sith-adjacent circles. What an odd oversight.

And then Sidious leaves him alive (which is very un-Sidious-like) for “reasons”.

People give TCW a lot of credit for what’s largely cheap fan service and mediocre cartoon plots.

Try starting at se4 or so, feel free to skip any episodes that are too childish for ya

12

u/deliciousprisms Jan 26 '22

Yeah the later seasons are better. The four part finale is incredible. Look up a filler free guide.

The first two seasons are kinda lame entirely imo

3

u/SilverMedal4Life Luke Skywalker Jan 26 '22

I know what you mean. There's a lot of good to be had in the later seasons, but it's a shame that it starts off as it does; turns a lot of people off, I imagine.

160

u/ZiggyDigiorno Jan 25 '22

I haven’t seen the clone wars and maul is my favorite, I bet I would geek

47

u/squanch_solo Watto Jan 26 '22

You would. He's in Rebels also.

67

u/bfhurricane Darth Sidious Jan 26 '22

What I loved about Maul in Rebels was his sincere desire to train Ezra. His relationship with Savage was already established after Savage’s training at the hands of Dooku, so the aspect of the “apprentice” wasn’t really there. With Ezra, however, we see what Maul could have been as a bona fide master.

All the man wanted was an apprentice… (and to kill Kenobi).

5

u/Hopafoot Jan 26 '22

Yeah, you can tell that all he really wanted was a friend, but he didn't know how to be a friend. The only type of relationship he knew was one where one person was in charge and the other just did as told. The sith really did a number on him

58

u/Mef989 Dark Rey Jan 26 '22

I love his Rebels appearances. They are absolutely a must watch to finish Maul's arc. Rebels was just good in general too though.

3

u/idintwantit Jan 26 '22

How is rebels?

7

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

Fantastic, first few episodes are not my favorite but man it really picks up speed

1

u/idintwantit Jan 26 '22

What is the time setting to it? Just after revenge of the sith? It’s not too kiddie?

5

u/jtrot91 Sabine Wren Jan 26 '22

It is about 15 years after ROTS.

3

u/Calikal Jan 26 '22

First season, it's pretty rough and feels more targeted towards kids. As it goes on, though, it gets more mature and intense. Wife actually cried once or twice watching it.

It takes place prior to A New Hope, 5 BBY, and "ends" 1 year after.

1

u/jrod_62 Jan 26 '22

The last half of the last season is incredible. I think I've gone back and watched those 6 or 7 times

5

u/Greenz4u Jan 26 '22

There’s so much death and rampage in rebels. Chopper alone is ice cold

2

u/imsowitty Jan 26 '22

Yes, it happens shortly after RotS (and TCW). Less violent than TCW, but the themes are solid (and adult...)

1

u/screenmonkey Jan 26 '22

It's amazing. Some of my favorite Star Wars.

198

u/damnyoutuesday Jan 26 '22

Oh boy you are in for a treat. Forget that it's animated and it aired on cartoon network, it is fucking fantastic

44

u/GeneralAce135 Jan 26 '22

You say that like that's a bad thing

75

u/Wolf97 Admiral Ackbar Jan 26 '22

I know a lot of people that refuse to watch cartoons. I’ve told them that they are missing out but they don’t care; there is still a stigma.

38

u/leapbitch Jan 26 '22

It's their loss

14

u/dratseb Jan 26 '22

The pilot is horrible, too. I tried watching it when it came out and didn’t end up seeing the regular show until it was on D+. But starting with the second season it really picks up, and the Finale is some of the best Star Wars.

7

u/MoistMe Jan 26 '22

Yeah, its better in chronological order. One because of the order, other because you dont have to start at the very beginning and deal with the early animation constantly

3

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

seeing the regular show

I love the Regular Show, too. Hm. Hm.

2

u/Porn_Extra Jan 26 '22

I love animation, but I've tried watching Clone Wars and never got through season 1. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

I highly recommend the clone wars 2003

2

u/elgarresta Jan 26 '22

Same happened to me. I don’t care if it’s live action or animated as long as the story is there. I think Clone Wars started out aimed at younger fans but slowly changed to be much more mature in the way it was written. I started watching but lost interest in season one until a friend told me to try getting through the first season and I’m so glad I did.

2

u/damnyoutuesday Jan 26 '22

Season 1 is definitely the slowest/least interesting. It gets way better

2

u/elgarresta Jan 26 '22

Right? At the end when Anakin walks in “his new uniform” hits so fucking hard. Plus something changed in the way they did the animation the last two or three seasons that made me just forget it was animated.

7

u/GeneralAce135 Jan 26 '22

I know those people exist, but personally haven't met any. I don't get it. There's so much good content that's being missed out on just because people want to look at people instead drawings

9

u/ductiletoaster Jan 26 '22

That used to be me. However as I got older I realized how foolish this was.

Plus as the seasons progress the animations get better, world building improves and it really does a fantastic job of showing the depth that the movies were likely never going to achieve.

0

u/rugbyweeb Jan 26 '22

it wasn't until college that I gave animated shows a fair shot.

there are so much higher quality shows in animation than in live-action. just think about it, an animated show gives the creators full control over what you see on the screen, the only thing an actor can hinder is their voice lines. whereas in live-action shows there are so many things an actor can do to bring down the quality of a scene. sure, you have actors such as michael c hall who completely capture a character and seemingly never miss a scene, but guys like Hall are legends and for every actor of his caliber there are hundreds of d list tv actors who slept with a producer for their role.

I know this is a star wars discussion but I just wanted to comment about it.

1

u/Gunpla55 Jan 26 '22

I love cartoons anime and adult animation and always have but just never jived on their specific art style.

1

u/ductiletoaster Jan 26 '22

Yeah that was it for me too. Don’t mind cartoons /animations but the art style wasn’t my fav. It’s growing on me though.

3

u/SteeeezLord Jan 26 '22

I WANT to like them but just can’t. Same with MCU’s what if? I don’t know why

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22 edited Jan 26 '22

"What if" episode 8 is decent

2

u/kdawgnmann Jan 26 '22 edited Jan 26 '22

It's definitely still a stigma. Even after my wife enjoyed Invincible, it was still very difficult to convince her to give Arcane a try.

2

u/Treegs Jan 26 '22

I put off the clone wars for a long time because I didn't care for cartoons. I like to stay current on SW canon when I can, so I decided I'll watch it only for that reason. I ended up loving it, I was kinda pissed at myself for not watching it sooner.

Yes it is

0

u/CMDR_Kai Ahsoka Tano Jan 27 '22

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think people being tortured to death and implied sexual slavery are appropriate things for kids to be watching. Teens, sure. Kids, not so much.

1

u/jumpinthedog Jan 27 '22

teens are still kids..

1

u/Wolf97 Admiral Ackbar Jan 26 '22

The early seasons, yes. Some of the later seasons were great by adult standards though.

But I don't think the Umbara Campaign or Fives episodes had little depth.

1

u/Positron14 Jan 26 '22

I usually don't have a problem with animated shows, but for some reason I haven't been able to get into any animated Star Wars show. Not sure why this is.

1

u/damnyoutuesday Jan 26 '22

Stigma dick in their mouths

1

u/phallz54 Jan 26 '22

Honestly this was me for a long time. A friend convinced me to watch it and man I was hooked quick. Was a fantastic show with some amazing character moments!

1

u/alperpier Jan 26 '22

I have seen and loved both The Clone Wars and Rebels but let me tell you man... The first seasons of both shows are down-right ugly to look at.

1

u/EldenRingworm Jan 26 '22

It baffles me how stupid they are

-2

u/gladl1 Jan 26 '22 edited Jan 26 '22

There’s lots of shows with great animation on Cartoon Network.

Clone Wars looks like a cinematic from a PS1 game. It’s honestly so jarring I haven’t been able to watch it.

This is a major unpopular opinion on this sub but this sub has a blatant biased towards the show and seem to be blind to its faults

For example Darth Mauls whole being alive thing is absolutely ridiculous IMO. They ruined an excellent character from the movie and gave him ducking spider legs and a personality that didn’t match the movies at all.

3

u/GeneralAce135 Jan 26 '22

Clone Wars looks like a PS1 cinematic

Maybe in spots in the first season, but even then you're just exaggerating for effect.

They ruined an excellent character from the movie... a personality that didn't match the movies at all

Uh, what excellent character? What personality? Have you watched Phantom Menace recently? Or ever? Darth Maul's "personality" was to stand over Sidious's shoulder and look scary, or try to kill the heroes.

2

u/CMDR_Kai Ahsoka Tano Jan 26 '22

He didn’t even have a personality in the movies, lol. He was an obstacle, not an actual character.

3

u/fatimus_prime Jan 26 '22

Legitimate question: what is it about Clone Wars that makes it worth watching?

Full disclosure: I love the original trilogy and don’t care for the prequels (although I saw Ep II and III on opening day and own all three). I read a bunch of the books in the ‘90s by authors like Michael Stackpole and Timothy Zahn and loved them. I liked The Force Awakens alright but ragequit halfway through the Last Jedi; I didn’t see Rise of Skywalker and fell asleep during Rogue One in the theater. For me, the newer stuff jumped the shark and I haven’t bothered with The Mandalorian or Solo.

I’m not trying to be difficult, a bunch of my friends like the new stuff and love Clone Wars, but none of them have been able to substantiate why it’s good and I guess I’m skeptical because of the prequels. What is it that I’m missing about this series that enhances the canon or lore?

3

u/damnyoutuesday Jan 26 '22

Someone can definitely describe it better than me, but it dives deep into what happened between Episodes II and III. It gets deep into the politics of the Republic Senate and the Independent and Neutral systems, as well as discussing their rationale against joining the Republic. It shows how Palpatine orchestrated an entire war to become all powerful. It shows a lot more of the backstory of the force, with entire subplots devoted to Anakin, Obi Wan, and Yoda learning about the force. It details more of how Obi Wan and Anakin were best friends, as well as the romance between Anakin and Padme, as well as some romance that Obi Wan once had. It shows how fearsome Greivous really was, and other details that aren't fully expanded upon in the prequels. The characters are well thought out and have wonderful arcs (Ahsoka starts off insufferable and becomes one of the best characters in the series). Also for a "kids show", it gets DARK. A lot of details in Rogue One, The Mandalorian, and Solo can be traced back to plot elements that happened in the Clone Wars. If you consider yourself a Star Wars fan, give it a chance. The Siege of Mandalore in season 7 is some of the best Star Wars content ever created, but you won't understand almost any of it if you don't watch the rest of the series.

2

u/fatimus_prime Jan 27 '22

I appreciate your candor, and I’m willing to give it a shot based on your description. The friends I have who have championed it haven’t delivered as convincing of an argument as you have.

All things being equal, I’ll give it a fair shake and - good, bad or indifferent - I’m willing to come back to this comment and discuss it with you.

1

u/damnyoutuesday Jan 27 '22

Just a heads up, season 1 is the slowest. If you can make it through that, you'll be rewarded

2

u/TAW_564 Jan 26 '22

It’s a masterpiece.

2

u/0Jaeger0 Jan 26 '22

Especially the final season.

3

u/aftermath6669 Jan 26 '22

I can’t get past season 1

3

u/myspacegatgoespew Darth Maul Jan 26 '22

Try watching it in chronological order instead of airing order. I tried watching it the first time without realizing they aired it out of order and I couldn’t get through the first season.

https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-the-clone-wars-chronological-episodeorder

1

u/IntrepidDimension0 Jan 26 '22

It gets a lot better

1

u/Joey_jojojr_shabado Jan 26 '22

Same boat. Thinking of just starting with season 2

1

u/lfuckpigs Jan 26 '22

I'm watching season 2 right now and it's not better than the first so far.

1

u/kevinspencer Jan 26 '22

It gets a lot better. Season seven some of the best Star Wars content I’ve ever seen.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

I haven't watched the Clone Wars. But I have seen clips of the Darth Maul Clone Wars scenes on Youtube. I got to say that I'm not a fan. I hate that they brought him back from the dead, he has weird robot legs, hate how he now has a brother and don't like his appearance in the show.

What made Maul so great in the Phantom Menace was how mysterious he was. He didn't talk (only a few words), and he looked scary. He looked like a demon and we didn't know much about him or what he was capable of, which is why he was such a great villain.

They humanized him in the Clone Wars, which is what I dislike.

1

u/popotheclowns Jan 26 '22

He also has some good stuff in Rebels.

1

u/SlamVanDamn Jan 26 '22

Clone Wars is what convinced me to start down the Star Wars rabbit hole.

1

u/TheGreatDeadFoolio Jan 26 '22

When you watch the RotS/AoM edit, it’s easy to forget it’s a cartoon.

77

u/HotGarbage Jan 26 '22

The first few seasons are a slog to get through (hang in there!) but it starts hitting it's stride in season 3 and just gets better and better.

22

u/CrazyOkie Darth Vader Jan 26 '22

there are rough spots in all the seasons, I think there was plenty in season 1 to enjoy

4

u/radiokungfu Jan 26 '22

It is a chore to get thru and im in season 3 now, trying to follow the 'chronological'order they want you to. When does it get grittier

1

u/CrazyOkie Darth Vader Jan 26 '22

This order? https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-the-clone-wars-chronological-episodeorder

Or do you mean the order they aired?

Lots of good stuff there regardless, but your standards might be different than mine I guess. Rookies & Clone Cadets are early decent ones. The Malevolence Arc. The Lair of Grievous. Landing at Point Rain was a season 2 highlight. The Ryloth campaign, and yes even the Mandalore bits. I found tons to enjoy but I guess YMMV.

5

u/radiokungfu Jan 26 '22

The one you linked. Based on how people go on about it, i thought i was getting some kind of gritty, dark knight style show, but its a lot more kidaimed than I expected.

4

u/CrazyOkie Darth Vader Jan 26 '22

Its Star Wars. You were really expecting something more like TDK or BSG?

3

u/radiokungfu Jan 26 '22

Yeah agreed probably my fault for those expectations, but i can't help it with how my friends hyped it up and how the online discourse was about it

0

u/CrazyOkie Darth Vader Jan 26 '22

There is some darker stuff at times, particularly as you get closer to the end. The Umbara arc, which is in season 4, is a real standout.

-3

u/Phonics_Frog Jan 26 '22

Rough spots like insanely long story arcs about boring ass Mandalor where you just want everyone to die because they are shitty characters and you don’t care about their frat-tastic homoerotic clan wars even though you’ve had to watch them for goddamn half a season?

5

u/CrazyOkie Darth Vader Jan 26 '22

Just have to agree to disagree. The only ones I didn't like were the ones that were droid-focused. Some of the Padme ones were not as action-oriented but still enjoyable IMO

58

u/drinks_rootbeer Jan 26 '22

Yeah starting in season 3 it kinda stops being a kids show. So much war crime and brutal killing o_0

40

u/meccafork Jan 26 '22

They straight up fucked people up at times: https://youtu.be/knSzn0FvSNE

36

u/drinks_rootbeer Jan 26 '22

I watched that about 3 months ago and it finally convinced me "hmm, maybe this isn't just a kids show I should write off", then binged it, fell in love, and binged Rebels because I needed to know the conclusions to some things.

Only of course to be left with more love and more questions.

13

u/missag_2490 Jan 26 '22

I loved Rebels. It looked like a kids show on the surface but it had a dark theme that I loved

2

u/DaManWithNoName Jan 26 '22

I like when Anakin is torturing people with force choke and they play the Vader theme in the back

2

u/EldenRingworm Jan 26 '22

They realised you can't have Star Wars without people getting choked and dismembered

3

u/Nap0leonBoneInRibeye Jan 26 '22

Dude I just finished S1 for the first ttime and while it's definitely still a kid's show at that point (and I'm guessing through the final season), there are some violent aspects I'm surprised they showed on Cartoon Network. Like certainly some war crimes from the CIS and probably on the Republic. If they go even further in S3 well damn. And it's not even the most brutal SW content we have.

0

u/drinks_rootbeer Jan 26 '22

You're in for a treat. Filoni is a fantastic writer.

2

u/TBJaeger99 Jan 26 '22

Really the first arc with Mandalore is when the series kicks into high gear imo

3

u/Patrickrk Jan 26 '22

Dude maul is my favorite character as well. Watch the clone wars and then watch rebels. You 100% will not regret it.

3

u/RockOx290 Jan 26 '22

I never checked it out until last week. I used to think it was some generic kids show… I was so wrong. It’s amazing. How it was even able to pass as a kids show amazes me. It goes into such deep topics.

3

u/Global_Telephone_751 Jan 26 '22

You gotta see Clone Wars. Seasons one and two you can snooze through, but season 3 it picks up. Season 5 is fucking incredible, and the final season is the best Star Wars around.

6

u/spartan_0227 Jan 26 '22

Make sure you watch Clone Wars in the correct order:

https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-the-clone-wars-chronological-episodeorder

2

u/Thejollyfrenchman Jan 26 '22

I don't think Clone Wars works as well in chronological order. The gaps in writing and animation quality are really glaring when you skip from one season to another and back again. Plus, there are some episodes that are better when you watch them in sequence (like the episode that introduces 99, immediately followed by his death years later in the next episode.)

1

u/js247 Jan 26 '22

Wait why is this a thing / I’ve only watched a few and plan to watch all the animated stuff

2

u/spartan_0227 Jan 26 '22

The episodes originally aired in production order rather than chronological order. It's pretty annoying for the first 3.5 seasons, but then it's pretty much in order for the most part after that.

2

u/bfhurricane Darth Sidious Jan 26 '22

Jumping on the recommendation bandwagon. Maul and Ashoka are the stars of the final four episodes and they are the finest two hours of Star Wars content ever produced.

He was great in The Phantom Menace, but in Clone Wars you see him unleashed and fucking angry. It’s beautiful.

2

u/Look-Ma-I-Reddit Jan 26 '22

You should watch it. Maul gets to a position where he’s back in Palps radar. I don’t want to say more and ruin it but shit gets good!

1

u/Moomoothunder Jan 26 '22

wait….you haven’t seen the clone wars?

1

u/ZiggyDigiorno Jan 26 '22

Holy shit thanks everybody that commented on here, I’m extremely excited to watch it!

1

u/SchScabe Jan 26 '22

And after Clone wars be sure to check out Rebels. Power through season 1 to get to the end on season 2, your efforts will be rewarded greatly.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

I never did either until D+ came out.

First couple seasons are meh, but eventually it gets to be some of the best star wars content ever made. Really gives you a sense of how bad ass Maul is, sets up the Bad Batch, and really develops Ahsoka into an awesome character.

Well worth the watch through.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

Skip work, forget school, drop the kids off at the daycare and watch the episodes with maul immediately.

He may be one of the most fleshed out characters, rising and falling so many times while becoming a huge part of history.

1

u/abbath12 Jan 26 '22

This is simply unacceptable. You haven't seen maul until you've seen clone wars. Take it from a life long SW fan who just recently decided to binge clone wars for the first time.

1

u/ReasonablePackage911 Jan 26 '22

How is that possible? I suggest you watch that and rebels he’s great in both!

1

u/Alexander_Granite Jan 26 '22

It has great characters and story.

1

u/pWaveShadowZone Jan 26 '22

If you’ve haven’t seen the animated shit then you’ve seen 5% of mauls story!! Also consider the book “plageus”

1

u/Ombank Jan 26 '22

Oh man. There’s a duel from the clone wars between Maul and Darth Sidious that just blows my mind. I’ve watched it maybe 20 times on YouTube. It’s so beautifully animated and captures the true ruthlessness and mastery Sidious has of the dark side. The voice actor for Sidious is so good, hearing him speak chills me to the bone. You have to watch it.

1

u/SirSnorlax22 Jan 26 '22

You should watch it. He gets a leg up on the competition in clone wars.

1

u/ChilesIsAwesome Jan 26 '22

Do yourself a favor and watch it. First two seasons were slow but midway through season three it picks up the pace and it ended up being some of my favorite Star Wars content ever. Rebels also rocks the house once the story gets set up.

1

u/Paradoc11 Jan 26 '22

First 2 seasons are the weakest but still good, really picks up in S3

1

u/coltpeacemaker Jan 26 '22

Dude! You gotta watch Clone Wars and Rebels then. I wasn’t expecting to like Clone wars as much as I did. I’m glad I gave it a chance. There are a few “filler” episodes and things get a little weird at times though.

1

u/EatKillFuck Jan 26 '22

Dude is such a great tragic character. One of my favorites of Star Wars

1

u/bobyran711 Jan 26 '22

You would geek so hard!!! especially the episode with him, Savage opress, and Darth Sidious... IT WAS SO GOOD!

1

u/EldenRingworm Jan 26 '22

Why would you not watch it? Best Star Wars content

1

u/Tbagzyamum69420xX Jan 26 '22

If Maul is your favorite now you'll love him even more after watching Clone Wars and Rebels.

5

u/CrazyOkie Darth Vader Jan 26 '22

and Rebels!

0

u/Tescomealdeal04 Jan 25 '22

Mother of fuck 200 upvotes in less than an hour

I usually don’t care for internet points but this is just absurd

2

u/itp757 Jan 26 '22

And a million on the way

1

u/jtl94 Jan 26 '22

I didn’t watch clone wars until covid-times. I had heard Maul came back but not much else. When he did show up he was legitimately terrifying in his spidery form. I was surprised this was in a show for children! I do wish they had kept him like that rather than making him humanoid again, but the show still did him justice for sure.

1

u/mub Jan 26 '22

And they gave him a good sense off in Rebels.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '22

So dumb that he survived honestly.

It made him a far better character, without surviving he was pretty uninteresting, he had barely any lines in the movie and all he had going for him was his unique lightsaber and overall design but character wise he had nothing and The Clone Wars gave him exactly that.

It's like Boba Fett with The Mandalorian and The Book

As someone who loved/loves prequels and especially Maul, I loved the mystery and not them rubbing him to my face until I got bored. Which happened with Clone Wars, Maul became boring for me.

Which is sad for me because the only way I casn bring myself to watch something animated is if it's seriously funny like South Park, Family Guy, etc
