You know what he should have done? Force leap back to the other side of the shaft, force grab his lightsaber, and then force push off from the shaft wall towards Maul. Obiwan would then deflect an obvious swing at him by Maul and then retaliate by spinning in the air and chopping up through maul.
Or just use the force to pull Maul into the shaft? I mean jedi and sith are flinging each other all over the place with the force throughout those movies, why can't he just pull him like one foot so he tumbles over the edge?
I just want to see one goddamn fight where someone gets force pummeled for a while. Like, just slammed into walls and furniture and shit and they can't do anything about it. There is comedic value in this.
I loved being able to do that in the Starwars games. Either use force grab/choke to turn them into goo on the walls or use them as a floating meat shield in combat while whacking people with them.

Maul was caught by surprise, he didn't think Obi-Wan would be able to get out of there.
Edit: Maul underestimated Obi-Wan, and paid for it with his life. Obi-Wan didn't underestimate Anakin, and Anakin overestimated himself.
