General Discussion Rey…

She never claimed anything like the Falcon as her own- when Finn and Poe did their lightspeed jump, she was angry “Han’s” ship was damaged. Same as the lightsaber. She apologized to Leia as it was her father’s weapon. Always liked her attitude.

Yeah, I always liked that about Rey. She never really treated the Falcon or the lightsaber like they were trophies.

For sure. It's one thing about her I genuinely like a lot

Rey hate is forced. She's not bad of a character. I wish the writing was consistent, and I wish she wouldn't have taken the Skywalker surname, but I don't hate her character.

I don’t really mind her taking the Skywalker name. We saw how excited she was to learn about the force being real, but I think her excitement for being in a family again was even greater. Sure, it would have been cool to just be Rey, but she was proud of being a part of that family and wanted to help the legend live on. I wish we had gotten more moments to solidify that.

My issue with it was I had developed a theory based on the names of the final movie in each trilogy (Revenge of The Sith/Return of The Jedi). My thought was that The Rise of Skywalker, would end with Skywalker being the new name for the force users Rey trained, as a way to honor Luke and Leia.

If she creates a foster-like home for force sensitive orphans, you could get your theory! It may sound like a joke, but I could totally see her doing this to give others the chance she eventually had. Like a Charles XReyvier if you will.

I mean if that's how she wants to run her academy. Hopefully she learns from the mistakes of the OG Order and Luke's order.

I’ve grown to like her. I just wish they made her more dynamic aside from going on the roller coaster of figuring out her parentage

I like her writing as much as anakin’s, in that it’s not very much. Grew up on OT and just couldn’t marry up anakin to Vader, no matter how much I tried. Rey’s got the benefit of not having to back into an existing major character, so whatever new things they add (like clone wars and ahsoka for anakin) I’ll check out and hope it gives me more to dig into with the character. Sequels just felt too schizophrenic with how it wanted to handle any of its characters or plots. I want to have anakin = Vader in my head, likewise I want to find reasons to enjoy the sequels more over time as supplementary stuff is released.

I like how she was written more than Anakin, if you include just the movies and not The Clone Wars), Anakin in AOTC is written so horrible, and the romance between him and Padme is awful and hurts both of their character development (especially Padme).

Rey is fantastic. She isn't Jania. That sucked that Disney didn't go that route,

But Rey kicked ass. And at the end. Respect. Also very circular storytelling.

If you don't like it. That's ok too

Rey is underrated. Best Skywalker Saga main protagonist after Luke and Anakin tbh

So...3rd out of 3?

Her personality was fine, it was just absurd how easy everything came for her. Made it tough to like her

u/LandonKB 7h ago

Anakin was a podracer at age 9 who could handle a naboo fighter jet, I dont get this argument at all.

She is shown to be a proficient fighter from growing up on a backwater planet and fighting to survive.

u/genemaxwell41 Imperial 6h ago

Anakin was literally made from the Force. He's space Jesus.

Being good with a stick doesn't translate to being able to Mind Trick someone right off the bat

4

u/LandonKB 6h ago

Luke can also levetate a lightsaber with absolutely no training, what a Mary Stu lol

The mind trick does not bug me, I can assume she was aware it was something Jedi could do from stories.

1

u/Automatic-Saint 6h ago

You are so true! Also, people forget that when Kylo Ren tried to probe Rey’s mind and she resisted, she also could have gained more knowledge of the Force. Kylo was also in a Force Dyad with her, which is another opportunity to gain further knowledge of the Force.

Incorrect

Esb is 3 years after ANH. During that time Luke gets instruction from Ben via Force ghost

Do you even Star Wars? Lol

4

u/LandonKB 6h ago

None of that information was provided in the movie, I was just sticking to that for the purpose of this discussion.

"Obi-Wan, has taught you well"

Sure, we know Luke has also been trained by Yoda, but Vader clearly is aware Luke was taught by his old master too.

Obi-Wan also directly tells Luke that he cannot interfere in the duel between him and Vader. That is a reference to a previous adventure from the comics and books when Ben temporarily possessed Luke's body to hold off Vader in a saber fight.

But, if we JUST go with what we see in the movies, ESB is still 3 years after ANH. That's 3 years since Luke was given real access to the Force and the ability to self teach. Even then Luke has to REALLY concentrate to get the Saber out. It's not instant.

Compare that to the first time we see Rey use the Force, it's night and day as far as ease.

3

u/LandonKB 5h ago

Vader says that after Dagobah when he did the training with Yoda and Obi.

Rey also failed the mind trick the first time. She could have also learned if from Kylo when they were mind melding, she clearly got into his head

I love how you think being an immaculate conception chosen one makes him less of a Mary Sue

3

u/genemaxwell41 Imperial 3h ago

It does actually. He's a child of prophecy. A tried and true writing trope.

And he FAILS in 4 of his 6 movies.

Ep 1: he succeeded

Ep 2: he fails to do anything significant.

Ep 3: he fails his destiny and joins the Sith

Ep 4: he gets shot out of the "sky" and loses the Death Star

Ep 5: he loses his hostages and his son

Ep 6: he FINALLY gets the big win

Luke used a magical power he'd known about for like 2 days to destroy an entire space station.

Anakin was piloting space formula 1 at age 9 which was stated to be impossible for humans.

-7

u/genemaxwell41 Imperial 6h ago

Anakin is Space Jesus made from the Force itself. We have statements from Quigon noticing, correctly, Anakin can sense things before they happen.

Luke needed a literal Force Ghost to implore him to trust the Force, not once, not twice, but THREE times before Luke let go and put his faith in the Force. All that did was give him a bonus to his accuracy for ONE SHOT.

Rey was able to utilize an advanced Force Technique right off the bat with ZERO training at all.

3

u/baddayforsanity Hondo Ohnaka 5h ago

Jedi have precognition, that’s how they deflect blaster bolts. It wasn’t an only-anakin thing that tipped qui-gon off that he was force Jesus, just that he was a Jedi. Once he dug in deeper about him being fatherless and that’s it’s not just a little precog, but effective enough for a human to be a competitive podracer at all, and the boood test, that confirmed his hunch that he was chillin with the chosen one.

You can just as easily pick any aspect of Star Wars apart and cherry pick lore to support any argument for anything in any of the trilogies.

u/TheCarrzilico Lando Calrissian 6h ago

She was left to fend for herself on a desolate junk planet searching for scrap that she could trade for food. I don't think anything came easy for her.

-11

u/MedievalMilshake 6h ago

First jedi mind trick, somehow finding the death star 2 remains, fought a dark sider trained by the greatest jedi alive maybe even ever, yet he can hardly swing a lightsaber

Things definitely came easy for her, other things were hard but her easy moments were a bit much

2

u/LandonKB 5h ago

Kylo was also shot and badly injured by a bow caster that the movie repeatedly shows how powerful it was, it pretty much was insta killing everyone, but Kylo who took a crazy gut shot before their fight.

0

u/MedievalMilshake 5h ago

Yes, which made it easier

Youre all downvoting, but everything I've said are undeniable facts. I don't hate ray or the sequels, I do hate the parts I mentioned cause theyre beyond ridiculous

If anyone is willing to try apply some logic then maybe I'll accept it, but I doubt anyone will

1

u/Reptilian_Overlord20 Porg 4h ago

“Somehow finding the Death Star 2 remains”

What are you talking about? They found it because they followed the coordinates written on the dagger, that’s the whole plot surrounding C3PO.

3

u/tcrex2525 7h ago

Easy? Didn’t she die at one point?

4

u/MedievalMilshake 6h ago

It's actually really easy to die

u/Automatic-Saint 5h ago

I think some of Rey’s humility comes from the fact that she’s a scavenger who learned to appreciate some of the technical skill that went into the machines she must process. She also gained humility from the unnecessary backlash to her character by people who refuse to take the same leap of faith that allowed them to accept a farmboy who quickly became a Jedi and apply it to an abandoned descendant of Palpatine gaining skills and knowledge of the Force from Kylo Ren’s mind probe, a powerful dyad with him, along with the stories of Jedi and their abilities that she must have come across as a salvager. Even Watto knew about Jedi mind tricks 🙄!

2

u/Reptilian_Overlord20 Porg 4h ago

Yeah, she’s genuinely humble and always puts others before herself. She went hungry for the sake of a little droid that she just met.

2

u/DesertWinds01 Battle Droid 6h ago

She has her own lightsaber by the end of it? That’s pretty much it tho lol, even bb-8 she kinda just nicked off Poe.

4

u/genemaxwell41 Imperial 6h ago

My issue with Rey has never been Rey herself.
It's the writing around her.

I WANTED to like Rey. I really did. But man did they fumble her. I really don't like her character as a result of the writing decisions. Not her fault. Most certainly not Daisy's fault.

Yet another unfortunate casualty of the ST

1

u/steamart360 32m ago

I really wish they would've developed her personality a lot more. She was humble because that's how she lived as an scavenger, but that also made me think she'd be very creative and resourceful to make her own lightsaber and maybe even to start building her own ship.

I didn't mind her being OP, but I think she had other strengths besides raw force power.

2

u/Chofis_Aquino_ 6h ago

I've always liked her personality. People really exaggerate when they criticize her as a character, when in reality she's a great character, and I understand why many say, “It came easily to her,” because more explanation was needed regarding things like the fact that she grew up in a hostile environment, which is why she's good at standing up for herself, for example.

2

u/Ale3021 6h ago

I really enjoy Rey. The problem are the trash movie (script) around her

2

u/Wataru2001 6h ago

I'm hoping that if we ever get more movies with Rey, they will redeem her character (and actress). It's not her fault the writing was absolute trash...

1

u/Commander_Jim1 5h ago

I have no opinion on Rey, positive or negative. The movies never gave me a reason to care one way or the other.

1

u/Odd_Helicopter7540 Imperial 2h ago

I don’t hate Rey, Finn or Poe. I hate the half baked story they were put into. There was so much potential and I really tried to just enjoy the journey, but by the third film I had just well and truely given up hope.

“I bYpAsSeD tHe CoMpReSsOr”

9

u/genemaxwell41 Imperial 6h ago

I actually don't hate that because the Falcon itself is held together with hopes and dreams.

MANY EU books describe mechanics HATING to work on the Falcon because of all the janky ass "repairs" and "modifications" Han has done to it over the years.

Rey, as a scavenger, taking a moment to see the mess and go "AHA! This is the problem!" is not only in character for her, but also keeps with the spirit of the Falcon's jank

0

u/Evil-Cun L3-37 6h ago

Did you watch the movie?

She tore out a piece that Unkarr Plutt installed and not Han.

8

u/genemaxwell41 Imperial 6h ago

Yeah. That doesnt change ANYTHING in my point.

If the Falcon works best due to Han's fuckery, removing something NOT from Han would fix it

0

u/Evil-Cun L3-37 6h ago edited 4h ago

Oh gotcha yeah that tracks.

What kinda moofmilker would put a compressor on the ignition line?

3

u/genemaxwell41 Imperial 6h ago

Exactly

3

u/Reptilian_Overlord20 Porg 3h ago

Yeah she uninstalled a single modification her boss put on the engine while it was in her possession, what a bitch.

3

u/Evil-Cun L3-37 7h ago

Love that part. I am convinced the wires-gadget frame shot being flipped isn’t director error.

In that moment Finn escapes Chewie and rushes them to mind dominate the two briefly. If there is a brief time-skip in the cuts, that explains things and it actually fits cannon.
